We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Data Protector's GUI is the most useful feature.""It is a stable solution. Stability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten...The initial setup process for the solution is easy.""Backup of SAP/Oracle -- they are more robust than the competition.""The stability of the product seems to be quite good.""The initial setup is very easy.""The dashboards in Micro Focus Data Protector are very good. They are similar to the dashboards in Veeam Backup & Replication.""The installation was simple and provided an easy way to install even on Unix servers. It has excellent features like deduplication.""The solution is easy to use."

"Veeam Backup & Replication is definitely very useful and simple to learn, and the restoring processes are very straightforward, making it a very solid product.""I'm satisfied with tech support, because the solution is so stable that I haven't had the need to engage any of the engineers yet.""The direct SAN backup feature perfectly integrates with our 3PAR storage infrastructure.""The product could be improved if they wrote more PowerShell scripts for controlling Veeam.""It is a global major solution for quite a lot of people.""Vendor integration for many of the enterprise features have allowed for us to have greater performance from our storage vendors further improving on our commitments to protect our clients' data.""They provide good technical support and we are satisfied with the support we have received.""The solution can work for companies no matter the size or scope."

Cons
"They should design the solution so that it is much easier for deployment and make the UI easy to use.""The Micro Focus Data Protector support is not as good as Veeam Backup & Replication's support.""The interface has been the same for many years and needs to be updated""I would like to see a better user interface in the next release.""I'm uncertain if it supports virtual machine backup and restoration. If they could enhance this aspect, they could gain more support from end users.""Microfocus needs to build a partnership with other vendors in addition to HPE as far as cloud consolidation of backups.""We face challenges with its stability.""Faster VEAgent Restores"

More OpenText Data Protector Cons →

"There are certain solutions, such as Rubrik and Cohesity, that are little by little, taking market share. Veeam needs to be more aggressive to keep their dominance in the space.""I would prefer it if the backup console did not require use of a specified program but rather that it could be opened from any website.""If a single file is corrupt then the restoration of the entire backup will fail.""The tech support could be better.""The patching can be quite difficult at times.""The parallel backup process from the Veeam server to Veeam has some limitations. The number of parallel backups should be increased and the compressional is very low. Sometimes it is half or one-third, but other backup solutions' compression levels are very high.""Unfortunately, the software only runs on Windows.""In terms of what could be improved, when creating a backup job with Veeam, you can create a daily backup, but it doesn't do it within that job. It does not give you the ability to also set the terms for monthly and/or weekly backups. It has to be a separate job. It gets clunky to manage the timeframes where you don't want a daily to run on this day and creating weeklies. And you don't want a daily to run on this day doing monthlies. That is hard to deal with. It would be really nice if you could do it through a single command line or a single interface."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Pricing/licensing is Data Protector's single best offering. In its most basic environment, the only license required is for whatever target device is required."
  • "The licensing structure provides cost savings to business."
  • "It is fast, reliable, and its licensing policy is great."
  • "Avoid using many LTO drives; when using fewer drives, the price will be extremely good."
  • "In Data Protector, if you need extra features, you need to buy the agents for these features. Some of the features are Terabytes, some of them are agents. There's some complexity in the pricing and licensing."
  • "The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
  • "The pricing is around $3,000 to $5,000. The charge additionally for support and to scale."
  • "The solution requires paying for a license."

  • "If you have Exchange, Oracle, SQL, or a supported SAN, then I suggest getting at least an Enterprise edition. It’ll pay for itself in no time."
  • "The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better."
  • "Room for improvement is actually more in the way of licensing. The really good and useful features are in the Enterprise plus edition, and that one is really expensive."
  • "Since pricing is per socket, it is not expensive to add capacity as you go along."
  • "The licensing is based on the number of cores you have in your ESX or Hyper-V environment."
  • "The price is a bit high. Licensing type is VMware friendly, so it is easy."
  • "I think the price is good when you choose the Essentials Suite, but when you buy a full featured version (for instance the Enterprise Plus) the price is a little bit expensive."
  • "Setup cost and licensing of Veeam are nothing to complain about when compared to similar products for enterprise backup recovery solutions."

    Reviews from Real Users

Veeam Backup & Replication is a solution that stands out when compared to many of its competitors. Some of its major advantages are its ease of set up, the fact that it is agentless, and that it has an intuitive dashboard.

A Network Operations Manager at an educational organization says, "Integration with VMware is excellent with very granular recovery."

An Inside Solutions Architect at a tech services company mentions, “I like that it's agent-less, easy to set up, and hardware-agnostic.”

An Account Manager at a tech services company states, “The dashboard is very, very easy to understand. We do demonstrations all the time with customers just to show them. If they've lost particular files because of a server going down, we can retrieve those files for them and quickly bring those files back up.”

Kerem C., Director of Professional Services/Senior Solution Architect/Trainer at a tech services company, explains, “It's good for backup performance management and backup window management.”
