Easy to set up, scalable, and has good technical support, but data consistency is challenging, and sometimes processes get abended
Pros and Cons
  • "Oracle GoldenGate features work fine, which is what I like about it. I also like that it's scalable, easy to set up, and has good technical support."
  • "The main problem of Oracle GoldenGate is that sometimes, the processes get abended. Data consistency is also challenging."

What is our primary use case?

We're using Oracle GoldenGate primarily to check data consistency, replication, and reporting.

What is most valuable?

Oracle GoldenGate features work fine, which is what I like about it. I also like that it's scalable, easy to set up, and has good technical support.

What needs improvement?

The main problem of Oracle GoldenGate is that sometimes, the processes get abended. Data consistency is also challenging. For example, my team's problem with using Oracle GoldenGate is that occasionally, you'll notice missing rows on the table, and it's hard to find that data.

In the future, an additional feature I want to see in Oracle GoldenGate is the microservices feature.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Oracle GoldenGate for the last three years, and I'm still using it.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In terms of stability, Oracle GoldenGate is fine. It's a seven out of ten for me, stability-wise.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle GoldenGate is scalable, and there's no issue with it scalability-wise.

How are customer service and support?

I have experience contacting the technical support team for Oracle GoldenGate, and there was no issue with it. It's pretty good, so support-wise, it's a four out of five for me.

My company also has in-house support for the solution.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

My company uses Oracle GoldenGate because it is bundled with other Oracle products.

How was the initial setup?

Oracle GoldenGate is simple to set up.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Oracle GoldenGate is a high-priced solution because it follows the core-based pricing model versus the software-based pricing model of other solutions.

What other advice do I have?

My company is using Oracle GoldenGate.

In the company, Oracle GoldenGate is used in two environments. One is for data replication, and the other is for reporting purposes. In general, a total of fifty people use the solution.

My rating for Oracle GoldenGate is a six out of ten, mainly because of the price factor.

I strongly recommend Oracle GoldenGate to anyone who has servers and needs to do reporting. It's a solution that has no issues for the purposes I mentioned.

I'm a user of Oracle GoldenGate, not a partner.

Great for migrating data from Oracle platforms and is extremely scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "Data migration is the most valuable feature of Oracle GoldenGate."
  • "Oracle GoldenGate can enhance its functionality by enabling the merging of multiple migrations into one."

What is our primary use case?

I used Oracle GoldenGate for a pilot project involving the migration of an Oracle database to AWS using GoldenGate. It was one of the options considered for CICD migration. I attempted to build a pilot to demonstrate the proof of concept.

Our customers have different use cases for Oracle GoldenGate.

What is most valuable?

Data migration is the most valuable feature of Oracle GoldenGate.

What needs improvement?

Oracle GoldenGate can enhance its functionality by enabling the merging of multiple migrations into one. For example, if I have multiple Oracle databases on one side and wish to consolidate them into a single database, it would be beneficial if GoldenGate could capture data from multiple sources and consolidate it into one target database.

The one-to-one or multiple-to-multiple data capturing functionality works quite well with some limitations, of course, but it is currently functional. I see that many small, medium, and even larger businesses want to save money on licensing or decrease capital expenditures by migrating their infrastructure to cloud platforms. By using the cloud platform's scalability capabilities, we can easily set up a database that will scale up depending on workload. In this case, it makes sense to merge the databases into one and set up scalability in bands.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle GoldenGate for 17 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability depends on the manufacturers because GoldenGate still has some limitations. Depending on the user's data types, customer data types, or the platform source and target, it may affect the productivity of the entire system and the overall process. In fact, it could impact the stability. I would say that it has continuously improved over time. When Oracle switched from Streams to GoldenGate, the stability significantly improved.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle GoldenGate is highly scalable because it offers various options for deploying data capture agents and placing data receiving agents. The only place that requires significant resources is the Golden Gate host itself, which, to the best of my recollection, is not excessively resource-consuming. Therefore, I believe that a single, dedicated Golden Gate host can efficiently handle data migration or replication services for a wide range of databases. I am unsure about the specific technical requirements for the Golden Gate Server host, but as far as I remember, it is not overly resource-intensive.

I would rate the scalability an eight out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

The complexity of the initial setup is dependent on the platform being used.

The deployment, on average, takes between two to four hours per server if we don't use packaging services like Ansible for infrastructure deployment systems.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Currently, Oracle only offers licenses on an annual basis. However, it would be beneficial if they started to offer a time-based licensing format, allowing us to purchase a license specifically for a small project related to data migration, instead of having to commit to a full year.

In addition to the licensing fee, customers are also required to pay an additional 24 percent for the support.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Oracle GoldenGate nine out of ten. The only drawback is its inability to merge multiple Oracle databases into one.

For an organization using Oracle products, GoldenGate is the most reliable tool for migration or application use cases involving source or target Oracle databases. However, if they do not have Oracle databases on either end, there might be other options available that could be cheaper or more flexible, as I am not very familiar with GoldenGate agents on other platforms. I do not possess sufficient statistics or information about GoldenGate agents in such scenarios.

While I can confidently say that GoldenGate works effectively with Oracle projects, I am unsure about its performance with other platforms. There are certainly some capabilities, and we can consider relying on them or keeping them in mind. However, I am hesitant to recommend GoldenGate for data replication from non-Oracle platforms to other platforms.

Reliable, never crashes, and is quite powerful
Pros and Cons
  • "It is quite scalable."
  • "The solution costs a lot."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for the exchange of data between two databases. It's used for replication and some processes.

What is most valuable?

This is a powerful tool.

It is stable and offers good reliability. The server never crashes.

It is quite scalable.

The initial setup is very easy.

What needs improvement?

It's pretty close to perfect. There are no areas we see that are in need of improvement.

It is not very easy to use, however, for what it does, it's not too difficult to manage in general.

The solution costs a lot.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for more than five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable and reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is quite scalable. It easily expands.

It's not a product for the people, for the client base and therefore, there aren't a large number of users, per se. It's a tool for exchanging data. Nobody can access it apart from infrastructure people.

How are customer service and support?

I've never had a need for support. It works quite well and I have not needed help troubleshooting.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I was not at the company when the organization chose this solution. I'm not sure what was used previously.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is very straightforward to set up. It's not overly complex. I'd rate the implementation process nine out of ten in terms of ease of setup.

The time it takes to deploy depends on the platform. For example, a Linux or Oracle database may take a few minutes up to one hour.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's an expensive product. It's not cheap.

The solution charges are based on the type of CPUs. If you are using IPM or HPE, or Linux, pricing may be different. The cost also varies according to the agreement itself. Companies can try to negotiate costs.

What other advice do I have?

We're an Oracle customer.

I'd rate the product eight out of ten. We're mostly happy with its capabilities.

A stable solution that can be used for homogeneous and heterogeneous data migration
Pros and Cons
  • "Since the world is going towards open source, the solution's heterogeneous data migration feature is very useful."
  • "The solution's licensing price is very expensive and could be made more competitive."

What is our primary use case?

We use Oracle GoldenGate for homogeneous and heterogeneous data migration.

What is most valuable?

The solution supports large-volume databases. Since the world is going towards open source, the solution's heterogeneous data migration feature is very useful. The solution is helpful as the databases need to be available as DC and DR.

What needs improvement?

The solution's licensing price is very expensive and could be made more competitive. If I want to convert an Oracle database to a Postgres database, the schema conversion and the database transformation do not happen since it is purely a replication tool. It would be helpful if the solution could include features wherein databases can be converted from open source to Oracle and Oracle to open source.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle GoldenGate for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle GoldenGate is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle GoldenGate is a scalable solution that manages a large volume of data. Oracle GoldenGate is extensively used in our organization.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the solution through an in-house team. We have a large DBA team comprising 10 to 15 people with various database skills who deploy the solution for us.

What was our ROI?

With Oracle GoldenGate, our technical use cases of DR (disaster recovery) have been met.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We pay a yearly licensing fee for Oracle GoldenGate, which is very expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I am using the latest version of Oracle GoldenGate. Oracle GoldenGate is a suitable solution for people seeking a scalable, robust data transformation platform.

Overall, I rate Oracle GoldenGate a nine out of ten.

Powerful solution that centralizes our data and has a user-friendly interface
Pros and Cons
  • "This is a powerful solution provided by one of the most respected companies in the computer industry."
  • "Technical support for Oracle products needs to be more efficient (at least locally in Egypt)."

What is our primary use case?

The areas we use for this product for is centralizing the collection of hospital data. In Saudi Arabia there are five special hospitals and each branch there is a local facility for data entry. Users enter data in the local database in their branches and the data is collected in a centralized database that is also in Saudi Arabia. These tools use criteria to identify cases that are similar in different hospital branches to help in diagnosis and treatment.

I am working on this project to serve as the administrator for the database. Before this, I joined a lot of projects, sometimes part-time, in Cairo and I gained 18 years of experience working on databases in the maritime ports in Arab countries and in hospitals in Arab countries, in Cairo, in Egypt, in Iraq, in parts of Spain and around the Arabian Sea. My primary responsibility is to make centralized data available.

What is most valuable?

I signed with Oracle to use GoldenGate for this project five months ago. I needed two or three months just to explore GoldenGate to get to know it and the features. There are many awesome features in GoldenGate and from what I see in the case studies, I need some more months of discovery to know what I think are the most valuable features. If you call me a month from now, I will be able to answer the question as to which of the excellent features are the most valuable. Right now it would be that I have confidence that GoldenGate can handle this extensive project.

What needs improvement?

I use an on-premises installation of GoldenGate — a standard GoldenGate installation — to do our test deployment for our projects. Part of the Oracle solution that needs some improvement is the ability to test features extensively before purchase and deployment. I am from Egypt and the economy is not so good. To create proper test environments for complex enterprise deployments is very expensive. Right now there is no place in Egypt that has enough servers to provide a proper test environment for a large deployment like the one we have planned. I do my best to do the test here with what I have.

It is a poor model to test all the GoldenGate features in an improper environment because a valid test of the features of GoldenGate may require a huge investment in accessories like memory and processors. I still need to do the testing. I need to write the code to test out the deployment without a proper environment and without using some features that may be valuable in achieving our goals. I am going to join a project to perform testing with Oracle Exadata in hopes to have free equipment to test this with. In this way, I hope to have a good enough environment to test the product. The project will be huge will be much larger in the future.

It could be that I will find I need to test out the cloud as a potential solution. I think I need one month or two months to decide what is the solution. But assistance from Oracle in temporary testing facilities would be useful and create the opportunity for investment.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the product for about five months.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have a lot of experience with Oracle technical support. The technical support in Egypt is not responsive. When I have encountered issues they waste time in gathering unnecessary information. They send me a program, to export some files so they can look into the problem. This is a big waste of time and an unnecessary delay.

One or two days they are saying they are working on this case. While they are doing this I do my best to solve the problem on my own and search the Oracle Mechanic and Google. I raise the severity to the top, and nothing happens faster. The user suffers the consequence of inefficient support. I spent money on support and on my own I find out this issue is already a known issue and I apply the solution myself before they get back to me. They have the price I paid for support, and I provide my own solutions.

How was the initial setup?

I think that the installation of this product is very straightforward. I am sure I will encounter some problems and other issues because I installed a sample configuration of GoldenGate. This is a sample project where I have installed a huge database. It gives me the opportunity to encounter some problems and issues. I hope that I do not see any problems, but I am pretty sure I will experience some things that will go wrong.

The installation of Oracle's GoldenGate is fairly different from other similar applications. It is straightforward but at the same time more difficult. I think that is partly because other solutions will have about one-quarter of the features when compared to GoldenGate.

What about the implementation team?

I have completed the installations myself.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is done on a yearly basis. They have additional packages for technical support.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have had the opportunity to use many products working for 18 years with databases. The list would be long if I tried to name the other products that I worked with. For this project, I suggested directly going to use Oracle products to create a solution because my experience says that it is the best way to do it. With some solutions, it would only be possible to join two modems at the maximum. We needed something more robust and to me, it was obvious that out of everything Oracle was the best.

What other advice do I have?

My opinion of GoldenGate is that it is an improvement over earlier Oracle products. I think that the interface for GoldenGate is very user-friendly. I recommend that people support the use of Oracle GoldenGate and have made this opinion known to colleagues in Egypt who are responsible for team projects.

On a scale from one to ten — one being the worst and ten being the best — I would grade  Oracle GoldenGate as a nine right now. After one or two more months working with the product, maybe the nine would be ten. It could be ten right now because I haven't faced any problems. This tool and Oracle's reputation speak for themselves. I don't need to complicate the issues by involving and a big problem I had in the past. But if I need a real reason why it should not be a ten and a nine is justified, I need Oracle to improve its support in Egypt. This is a genuine issue that is ongoing.

A great choice for large-scale enterprises relying on real-time data integration
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's existing SaaS platform for data integration gives us an edge."
  • "The GoldenGate license is very costly."

What is our primary use case?

We use GoldenGate for real-time data ingestion and integration.

What is most valuable?

The solution's existing SaaS platform for data integration gives us an edge because many other features' functionalities are available, such as real-time dashboarding and data analytics.

What needs improvement?

The GoldenGate license is very costly.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability is relative because of the way you design the entire system. DCDR, high availability, all these things come into the picture. Stability depends upon the way the ecosystem or enterprise has been designed.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle GoldenGate is suitable for medium and large enterprises.

How was the initial setup?

The difficulty with the initial setup depends on the type of project you are setting up. Is it a small, midsize, or large project? You have to look at the type of vertical or line of business. If the business is in banking, the solution has to be secure. In the telecom industry, fast transactions and latency come into the picture. These factors come in during enterprise design.

The initial setup is very easy with structured data because Oracle is a master in that area. However, storage becomes an issue when discussing unstructured and semi-structured data. GoldenGate does provide access to all these things, and there isn't much of a challenge from the integration perspective with the solution.

I rate the initial setup a nine out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

We needed to exploit the real-time data analytics since data ingestion and integration were happening through the SaaS platform.

Oracle has a problem with pricing, and if they reduced the cost of their products, it would make a lot of sense. Today, many freely available tools to ingest data cover all three types: structured, unstructured, and semi-structured.

In a business like manufacturing, with data integration for large multinational companies, Oracle GoldenGate gains an edge over other solutions. Similarly, with telecommunications, for example, a multinational company like Vodafone, you would need GoldenGate to extract data. Data lineage helps control those things. Likewise, security is a concern. Smaller and lower-middle companies could not afford GoldenGate, however.

I rate GoldenGate an eight out of ten. However, different people, such as your CSO and CIO, will have different views. Your CFO, for example, might think the solution is too expensive.
