Q&A Highlights
Question: Which tool do you prefer: NetAlly AirMagnet Survey Pro with Aircheck-G3 or Ekahau Connect?
Answer: Both NetAlly AirMagnet Survey Pro with Aircheck-G3 and Ekahau Connect are powerful Network Modeling tools with many features. However, there are some critical differences between the two tools. NetAlly AirMagnet Survey Pro with Aircheck-G3: Strengths: Comprehensive Network Modeling and analysis capabilities Strong support for Wi-Fi networks Easy-to-use interface Weaknesses: Some say it can be expensive Some find it complex to use, even for advanced users Ekahau Connect: Strengths: Affordable, as reported by some Easy to use Cloud-based deployment Weaknesses: May not be as comprehensive as AirMagnet Survey Pro Limited support for non-Wi-Fi networks Many find that AirMagnet Survey Pro and Ekahau Connect have robust design and troubleshooting features. However, it is reported that AirMagnet Survey Pro offers more features and functionality for advanced users. For example, AirMagnet Survey Pro has a " Heatmapper " feature that allows users to create detailed heatmaps of their Wi-Fi networks. AirMagnet Survey Pro also includes a feature called "Aircheck-G3" that enables users to troubleshoot Wi-Fi networks in real time. We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Customer service is great.""I would like to rate the product as eight of ten.""Using the products to ensure the safety of our equipment that we have a lot invested in.""The predictive survey is the most valuable feature. I use it quite often.""The addition of the AirMapper software on the nXG and our AirCheck G2s has helped a lot because we're mostly not drilling down into the data. Local managers only need to see the coverage on their end and whether there are performance bottlenecks. These things are easy enough for us to ascertain with iPerf.""The most valuable features are the survey, spectrum analysis, and reporting.""The most valuable feature is the predictive survey. The antennas' RF patterns are reflected correctly on the drawing when preparing predictive heat maps.""It allows us to prepare more real designs. Later, we validate them with actual surveys."

"The most valuable features of the Ekahau Site Survey for us are the combination of using the tool.""I like that our users can send us a floor map. Sometimes it's not feasible to travel to another country where the users are based. So, the floor map is very useful. It's a fantastic product.""It is a stable solution.""I don't handle the software that much. I'll do some of the testing with our CTO. It is primarily him and I. He has commented before that he likes the fact that with two licenses, we can set it up so that when we're on a large facility, he can see where I am and I can see where he is. That's for sure is very handy in large venues.""It's easy to plot APs and generate reports.""I like Ekahau's interface and the reports it can generate.""Ekahau lets you create heat maps without doing the initial survey. It makes the task easier.""There are some survey tools that are a little easier to use, but the benefit of using the Ekahau is that it is very configurable. If you go into a building that has solid cement walls, instead of traditional walls, you can configure it for that. It is much more configurable than the other ones."

Cons
"The user interface needs a lot of improvement. The auto-placement of access points is not accurate.""But it's definitely a more expensive solution than other ones.""The throughput should be more advanced in the future. They need to add more versions of WiFi than just one.""Printouts are JPEG printouts. The AirMagnet software is proprietary. I can't send my customers a file, because it is AirMagnet file, even for building projects. I can only send JPEGs or screenshots of heat maps.""When you conduct an active survey and then want to use it for design work, it's actually not very useful.""The surveying features are in need of improvement, along with general usability.""AirMagnet Survey doesn't cover certain devices in the system.""I would say some of our newer techs that are going out to job sites can be a little bit intimidated by the interface."

"In all of our buildings, whenever we deploy wireless access points, we also have to deploy wireless intrusion detections. The Ekahau Site Survey tool doesn't allow us to differentiate between the access point and the intrusion detection device. That's because they're the same devices, but they're configured differently for the type of usage. That's one area that I would ask them to improve. They should allow the identification of access points versus wireless intrusion detection.""They should improve the iPad application because it's unstable. Also, Ekahau could be better integrated with other vendors.""It would be better if it provided clear visibility. It would be better if it accommodated large physical sites like a warehouse with a ceiling height of more than twelve to fifteen feet. In such situations, we were unable to provide better coverage.""Sometimes there is a cancellation between two signals that the solution is not able to monitor correctly, this could improve in the future.""The information regarding the clients and signal strengths is missing in the Ekahau console.""We were actually able to recover some access points in some areas that were over saturated. So I I can leave at least two areas where we probably had twice as many access points as we needed to. So we actually redesigned it and pulled some of those access points where I don't know that there was any proper planning done when they were initially deployed. It was before my time, but it just seemed way over saturated, and they were all beaten on each other. So Site wasn't helping. It was probably hurting, and we saved equipment that we could then deploy somewhere else. This can be improved.""The report generation has room for improvement and is missing small details.""Ekahau would benefit by making improvements to lag time."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The moment we began needing more of the vendor's support, the cost became very high; we switched to another solution."
  • "For technical support, you need an annual license, but it is not worth it."
  • "The pricing needs improvement."
  • "This product is very expensive."
  • "There is an annual cost of the solution. There are some additional charges, such as support and maintenance."
  • "The tool's pricing is medium."

  • "This solution is not cheap. If you only need an occasional site survey, you are better off contracting a wireless engineering professional that has one."
  • "The solution is priced fairly for the features that you receive."
  • "The licenses are a little pricey compared to iBwave, etc."
  • "The pricing could be lower because the Huawei radial planning is free for the partner. When I asked my boss about buying Ekahau and the USB key, it was complicated because of the high cost, which is €5,000."
  • "That's a tricky thing. When it started off, we had one three-year license and one one-year license because we have two devices. Now, from my understanding, we can only renew every year or get a one-year license, and that cost varies. Being a government organization, we get a different cost than commercial. We have deployed it on Surface Pro tablets. So, the only other cost would be the hardware cost."
  • "The pricing is quite expensive. Not all companies can afford it"
  • "We pay $6,000 yearly for the licensing, but each piece of hardware, the Ekahau Sidekick, is $5,000."
  • "I believe that it is approximately $2,000 per year for us. I know we pay for it on an annual basis."
