Q&A Highlights
Question: What are the differences between Palo Alto Networks Panorama and AlgoSec?
Answer: Hi Dear Anouar, I want to explain something to avoid misunderstanding. Palo Alto Networks (PAN) Panorama is the management dashboard for Palo Alto Firewalls; which is provided by PAN and comes with a license. However AlgoSec is used as a Firewall Analyzer tool to analyze firewall rules according to their severities, configuration mistakes, shadowing or redundant rules, etc. If you want a solution to analyze your firewalls and harden them; you can consider preferring a firewall analyzer solution. If you want to manage your firewall configurations, create rules, routes, etc., you can prefer to have PAN panorama; instead of managing the firewalls by connecting each of them separately.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It gives control and visibility to the end users.""It is very useful for PCI DSS compliance.""We now process FCRs much faster, which helps us to deliver faster and implement reworks at a quicker rate.""The most valuable feature is the ability to deploy new rules in all of the firewalls included in the environment at one time.""Thanks to this visibility, I was able to do my rule optimization.""Traffic queries are a great help when troubleshooting a problem, especially if the traffic is going through two or more firewalls.""In my opinion, the most valuable features are the network map, unused rules reports (IPT), and active change.""To be able to monitor all firewalls under one umbrella."

"The ability to manage a large number of firewalls from a single point is most valuable.""The reporting is great.""It's great for creating signatures and activating activities.""All of the reports and events from different locations can be managed centrally.""Palo Alto Networks Panorama is stable.""It is great that the records go back to 30 days.""Compared to all of the other firewall vendors, Palo Alto is very secure.""Palo Alto Networks Panorama provides many features, such as alerts, traffic monitoring, and logs."

Cons
"Our experience with support has been inconsistent. Sometimes, support is fast and clean; other times, not so much. Occasionally, they have taken a while to respond or provided an inadequate workaround instead of a solution.""My only concern is related to how they count the number of licenses. We have active and standby devices. If someone adds the standby device by mistake and does an analysis, it consumes two licenses. They need to improve the way they are counting the number of licenses because someone can do analysis on a standby device by mistake. We need a way to fix or solve this issue.""Support can be improved as there are time delays for resolutions.""The blacklisting and whitelisting of IP addresses should be improved. There are many false positives.""The simulation can be improved.""The documentation could be better.""Cisco Firepower device support is limited in our AlgoSec system and I think AlgoSec can improve in that area.""Initially, we found this as a complex deployment."

More AlgoSec Cons →

"There is room for improvement in the integration within endpoint detection. They need to do some integration between endpoints and the firewalls.""The ease of use of Palo Alto Networks Panorama is an area for improvement. Another downside is that you need a lot of comprehension to understand what it is.""The product could use some method of allowing for more customization and open integration with other controls.""A potential improvement for Palo Alto Networks Panorama could be a more competitive pricing structure.""The current documentation is not detailed enough.""Reporting might be an area to improve. It can provide reporting or some sort of graphical representation of your environment.""Sometimes technical support is slow to respond.""There is room for improvement in response time for tech support."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Pricing is okay and the licensing can be a little tricky with the initial setup."
  • "AlgoSec may be little pricier with its licenses, but it is probably better than any of other competitors."

  • "It is worth spending the cost for visibility on security. Of course, security is not cheap."
  • "It has improved our performance in operations, projects, and security."
  • "It will reduce your operations costs with improved team performance."
  • "Use the entire suite for its best benefits."

  • "Pricing is high compared to other vendors in the same space. Licensing is also fairly high for different functions to be added on."
  • "With the URL filtering, we probably went down from around four hours in response time to about five minutes."

  • "It has freed up staff time, which is where we are seeing ROI."
  • "Initially, Palo Alto looks expensive, but if you dig deeper then you will find that it is very comparable, or even cheaper than other solutions."
  • "You only pay for the license and there are no additional costs."
  • "We pay approximately $3,000 a year in order to use the product."
  • "The pricing model is reasonable for this class of solutions."
