We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Data Domain Boost has a unique protocol. I don't think with other vendors you get the same efficiency. I work with some the other products, but this solution has amazing efficiency in comparison.""It's a stable solution.""Operationally, we are satisfied as there have been no issues or closures to report.""The time taken for backup is very fast.""It cuts down network traffic, and only the relevant parts move around because it is deduced and encrypted.""Scalable and stable solution for backup purposes, with good encryption and huge data conversion features.""The time taken for backup is very fast.""The backup aspect of the solution is its most valuable feature."

"The features we use for the data deduplication are nice because we're able to back up a much larger amount of data, yet it doesn't necessarily take up that much data on the devices.""Data deduplication and replication would be the top two features. The encryption and cloud tiering are also attractive for the future.""It integrates with various backup software solutions, which makes it compatible with existing backup workflows and processes.""Deduplication is the most valuable feature. It saves us a lot of space. When we back up 100 terabytes of data, after dedupe, it only uses maybe five to six terabytes for the disk space in QoreStor.""QoreStor has helped us to reduce our backup storage requirements on-premises. We've been using the same devices for quite a while, and so it lets us keep using them as opposed to having to rip out all that hardware and create a new on-prem solution. The advantage here is even if we had to retire the hardware tomorrow, the QoreStor part doesn't change. We just have to have additional hardware and put the solution back on whatever hardware we pick and it'll do the same thing.""The dedupe and compression are pretty extreme. On disk, we're getting dedupe rates of up to 65 percent of data and compression of 34 percent. When you go to the cloud, it's more like 76 percent for dedupe and almost 50 percent for compression."

Cons
"My customer was interested in ransomware protection. Currently, Dell offers the Cyber Vault solution, which is separate from Data Domain. Ideally, ransomware protection would be integrated directly within DD Boost, without requiring an additional out-of-the-box solution. This feature is currently available with HPE's Zerto and Huawei's Ocean Protect with third-party products like PradoNet. While Cyber Vault exists as a separate solution from Data Domain, having some standard protection for immutable backups into DD Boost would be a valuable addition and make it more competitive with other vendors.""I'd like the be able to deploy the solution on SAN backups.""The solution could always be cheaper.""The experience of restoring VMware or Veeam Backup is difficult, when the backup you are using is a solution for backup, which is already having a deduplication. When you try to restore from Data Domain, it doesn't work perfectly, because Data Domain is already having a deduplication as well.""The solution could be faster.""The main issue I've identified is that when backing up a final backup from the branch server, we don't have deduplication functionality.""DD Boost could improve the solution by offering additional customizations that build upon existing features such as deduplication ratios. The primary objective of the solution is to create backups of existing data and push that data out to clients' backup systems. If they can make the process faster and introduce more enhancements, it would greatly benefit the backup environment.""DD Boost's technical support could be better."

More DD Boost Cons →

"The management interface is in need of improvement. The graphical user interface (GUI) for the web management tools appears clunky, and not super intuitive.""They need to increase their maximum capacity. Other than that, they're doing a pretty good job.""In terms of improvement, we would like to have an Air Gap feature to prevent a virus from attaching to something. So that when we don't do a backup, we want the QoreStor to stay offline. It would be a nice feature to have.""The ransomware protection of QoreStor could use improvement.""The setup of the software is definitely not the easiest thing. I worked a lot with Quest engineers, especially in the early days when we were first testing it and trying it out. I actually had some of the developers working with us at one point because they were going through these point releases, and I was having trouble getting it to work in this S3-compatible situation. We got it all working eventually, but setup is definitely not the easiest thing in the world.""The installation could use improvement. The initial installation was a little touchy and it's not really user-installable. You have to have a connection to support to install."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We scale this product by adding licenses, which are related to capacity."
  • "The cost is monthly."
  • "The hardware platform is cost intense, so for small and mid-range, this product is not the best choice."
  • "The pricing is high compared to the competition and should be reconsidered."
  • "The solution is very good because it is easy to use and it speeds up the backup and lowers the requirement for the storage rate. It is capable of encryption, compression, and deduplication and it is fast for sending all of the data over the network because it sends only the change blocks from the client to the DD server."
  • "The solution comes with a capacity license and it is a one-time purchase. There are additional costs, such as support."
  • "Dell EMC Data Domain Boost is an expensive product. There are extra costs for support because every year, you have to renew your SLA for support, and the cost is always increasing."
  • "My company must pay approximately 10,000 USD annually, making it an expensive product."

  • "Its pricing model is very attractive. You have one price, and you get everything from QoreStor."
  • "The cost is per terabyte, and overall, the cost was reasonable when compared to some competitors."

    Overview

DD Boost software delivers an advanced level of integration with backup applications and data base utilities, enhancing performance and ease of use. Dell also provides a DD Boost File System Plug-In (BoostFS) with DD Boost for even greater application support, which enables all the benefits of DD Boost for applications that use NFS for data protection. Rather than sending all data to the system for deduplication processes, DD Boost enables the backup server or application client to send only unique data segments across the network to the system.

Software-defined platform for secure cloud storage, deduplication and replication.
QoreStor® by Quest expands your data storage options while reducing your storage footprint and costs. Use QoreStor to quickly and easily shift data and object storage to the cloud for backup, disaster recovery and compliance purposes. Advanced compression and data/object deduplication algorithms slash storage requirements so you don’t exceed your storage budget.
