We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The installation process is pretty straightforward.""The most valuable feature is the virtual backup.""It's simple to configure.""I like Dell EMC Avamar's compression of data.""Dell EMC Avamar is very good with endpoint backups.""It's stable and offers good performance.""The product is very powerful and offers very good performance.""Dell Avamar has a push upgrade feature that lets you simultaneously push updates to thousands of clients. I also found the self-service part of Dell Avamar helpful."

"Restoring and cloning are easy to do.""Technical support has been very helpful when we have issues.""It has greatly improved our DR activity.""I like the instant backups and recovery feature that SnapCenter provides within NetApp storage systems.""The most valuable feature is the RBAC, the Role-Based Access Control. In our managed service, we can have different layers of security.""Being able to add everything in as resource groups is a valuable feature... Having all the SQL servers put into specific buckets, based on their year of release - 2008, 2012, 2014 - allows us to get almost immediate backups that are easily seen and reported on.""It's very helpful because SnapCenter is already integrated with VMware Snapshot, so it's very easy to use.""The product’s most valuable feature is cloning."

Cons
"If there is a need to move the data from one backup solution to another, it might be difficult since there is no option for a straightforward migration.""I want to see a more user-friendly and administrator-friendly Dell Avamar. The solution also needs a better UI and dashboard.""Avamar cannot back up Nutanix as a virtual solution.""We'd like to see something that could also work with Unix servers and physical servers to have a unified solution that works with everything.""It's very slow to backup and store information. It has two consoles and an application which are more difficult to use than a solution like Veeam.""Its ability to back up very large objects can be improved. In terms of new features, they can include the ability to use cloud services, like S3, more natively.""Dell EMC Avamar is a very complex product. It took a lot of time for the IT admins to get trained on how to use it. It is not very user-friendly, and we won't be using Avamar anymore. It needs a lot of improvement in terms of how the backups have been configured, and the reporting is too complex.""A benefit would be support for either Azure Cool Storage or AWS Glacier."

"There is one area that needs improvement and that's in the alerting. When you set up your SMTP alerts, it only has - and I don't understand why - the ability to send an anonymous SMTP. It doesn't do basic authentication, which frustrated me for a while until I figured out that I'm not missing something. It's just not there.""I'm waiting for SnapCenter for hybrid solutions. Right now, we only have SnapManager for hybrid. I need agents for that. People are looking to install SnapCenter in a SQL environment, but where they're running SQL on Hyper-V and using virtual files. Currently, we don't have support for hybrid.""The compatibility with other manufacturers, like Oracle and Hyper-V, could be improved. I would like to see it be more compatible with other software.""The DBAs are comparing it to SMO but it doesn't have a lot of the functionalities that SMO has.""The replication feature needs improvement in future releases.""If it was possible to create backups on non-NetApp storage, that would be helpful.""It needs to support vSphere 6.7.""What I did witness lately are issues with some Microsoft KBs, the updates. But it happened only once, and not on a major platform, it was on a small one."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is very expensive. It's a trust based licensing. So that's an ethical challenge."
  • "This solution is less expensive than Veeam for us, although it depends on the customer because we get a great discount."
  • "I'm not sure, but perhaps the pricing could be done better at the moment."
  • "The price is the main thing I'd like to see them change. If they can come down in price, that would be a good thing. It's very cost competitive in the entry level range, because Veeam pricing is much cheaper than Avamar."
  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."

  • "It's free. The license is included with other NetApp products."
  • "We see a financial value with SnapCenter because we don't have to license Commvault, which is pretty expensive."
  • "We have a site license, so it comes with the product."
  • "The license for SnapCenter was included with the storage array."
  • "It comes free with the amount of equipment we purchase from NetApp. In terms of pricing, zero is my favorite number."
  • "Pricing is very good because if you already have NepApp controllers, then it's included."
  • "The licensing is well-designed because it's already included in some packages with NetApp storage. Therefore, for most customers, it's okay as the SnapCenter license is already included in some NetApp bundles."
  • "The product is inexpensive."
