We performed a comparison between ESET Endpoint Protection Platform and Microsoft BitLocker based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out what your peers are saying about Microsoft, SentinelOne, CrowdStrike and others in Endpoint Protection Platform (EPP)."NGAV and EDR features are outstanding."
"Forensics is a valuable feature of Fortinet FortiEDR."
"The ease of deployment and configuration is valuable. It's very easy compared to other vendors like Sophos. Sophos' configuration is complex. Fortinet is a lot easier to understand. You don't need a lot of admin knowledge to do the configuration."
"The price is low and quite competitive with others."
"The stability is very good."
"It is a scalable solution...The initial setup of Fortinet FortiEDR was straightforward."
"Having all monitoring, response, tracking, and mitigation tools in one dashboard provides our analysts and SOC team with a comprehensive view at a glance."
"Exceptions are easy to create and the interface is easy to follow with a nice appearance."
"The most valuable feature of ESET Endpoint Security is the antivirus for the endpoints."
"It's easy to set up and quick to deploy."
"If it detects ransomware or something, it can isolate that computer."
"ESET Endpoint Security's best feature is that it's invisible until it detects a problem."
"What is great about ESET is the ERA Web Console through which we can pull various reports, monitor and administer all clients and servers, and the console is easy to use."
"Primarily used to protect computers from viruses and ransomware."
"The potential threat protection feature is the most valuable. In the event that one of my computers is not on the network and gets a virus, ESET Endpoint Security quickly detects the malware, and in most cases, it removes the virus. It also has the ability to remotely shut down the computer. I like the remote control part the most."
"It has been working fine. It lets you know when it finds things. We didn't have any incident where the place had to shut down or was taken over by anything. We haven't had any issues that we know of."
"It is an encryption tool and provides security."
"I like BitLocker because it gives us strong encryption to protect our data."
"You can do a silent remote deployment very fast."
"It's my understanding that the initial setup is straightforward."
"We have not seen any bugs or glitches, so the stability is good."
"The platform provides good performance."
"The most important aspect of this solution is that if your laptop gets stolen, the information is encrypted."
"It is easy to implement and has AD integration."
"We'd like to see more one-to-one product presentations for the distribution channels."
"The solution is not stable."
"I would like the solution to extend beyond endpoint protection and include other attack surfaces such as other network components."
"The SIEM could be improved."
"It takes about two business days for initial support, which is too slow in urgent situations."
"The only minor concern is occasional interference with desired programs."
"The security should be strong for the cloud. Some applications are on-prem and some are on the cloud. Fortinet should also have strong security for the cloud. There should be more security for the cloud."
"Cannot be used on mobile devices with a secure connection."
"The initial setup of ESET Endpoint Security was not complex because we have five years of experience. However, it is not as easy if we did not have the experience."
"ESET Endpoint Antivirus can improve by having better EDR intelligence and automation. The EDR still needs lots of human interpretation. It can be better if add more intelligence to the EDR part of the endpoint protection."
"The stability needs to be improved. There are bugs that you have to deal with."
"If I were in an environment that required a large-scale deployment then I would choose another solution over ESET."
"We have experienced some problems with the actualization of some endpoints. We then have to manually reinstall the version on these endpoints."
"They should have better support for different languages and auto-upgrading."
"ESET Endpoint Antivirus could improve the mobile device experience by having more coverage."
"I saw a bunch of false positives which need to be fixed."
"The solution should offer encryption for other items such as shared folders, removable media, etc."
"The reporting in Microsoft is very minimal."
"We recently found some stability issues with Microsoft BitLocker."
"The integration between Active Directory and BitLocker could be better."
"BitLocker should be available on standard Windows. We need to spend money on a Pro license to get BitLocker because it's essential to protect our customers' data. We don't want that to fall into the wrong hands."
"The product must improve the centralization of keys."
"The solution could be improved if it was more user friendly."
"For improvement, as it is now, I do not have any support from anyone. There should be a web interface to manage BitLocker. But for now, all I do is just install a new product on the user's machine and create it. I would like to be able to see everything that is happening, even if it is just through a web interface. I would also like to be able to see how many users are provisioned, which users are using BitLocker, and how to disable or enable it. That's what I would like to see."

Are you in a regulated industry? If so using the native BitLocker is not enough to prove compliance. You will need to use something like BitLocker Administration and Monitoring (MBAM) which is part of MDOP (Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack) or another tool that will manage Bitlocker and give you proof the device is encrypted in the event of a lost or stolen device. You also need to enforce secure password management, user training on passwords and regular password changes.
If you have Microsoft 365 Business premium you have additional controls over Bitlocker; or, M365 E3/E5, Windows Enterprise E3/E5 all have MDOP...
Other Bitlocker management can be found with SOPHOS and I believe TrendMicro as well.
Another tool to consider, especially for laptops, is ABSOLUTE software. It is built into the BIOS of the major laptop brands and just needs the key to activate it...
Also, ESET is a quality product for encryption. It gives you additional options for less than some of the Microsoft alternatives.
BitLocker is just not FREE if you are in a regulated industry since it needs management to truly be secure the device and prove compliance.
I hope some of this helps.
I guess the solution depends upon a couple of things for us and how we currently approach this for our clients.
We have both in place around a variety of small clients. As 99% of our systems have Windows Pro, they have BitLocker, therefore this would now be the first choice.
However, if the client requires centralised management and control we would then advise ESET. And that is the core to this for us, if they need central management, control, recovery - ESET every time.
If it is just encryption and there is no need to control/recover and a simple reformat would work (and loss of history/data is not an issue), then BitLocker is ok.
