We performed a comparison between FortiGate Next Generation Firewall (NGFW) and Netgate pfSense based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two Firewalls solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."The solution is scalable."
"Some of the valuable features are the firewall, IPS, web filter, and gateway capabilities. Additionally, it is easy to use and flexible."
"It's user-friendly and easy to operate."
"Its administrative panel is very intuitive and simple. It is simpler than the other solutions that we had. As an administrator, we are always looking for the easiest solution to manage network policies. We are able to filter everything on our network and also use the VPN feature, which is important these days when people are working remotely during COVID."
"The security fabric is excellent."
"The customization potential is quite impressive."
"The pricing is great and very reasonable."
"The features that prevent internet connections, the filtering are the most valuable because we did not have any internet protection before."
"The solution’s interface is pretty user-friendly."
"Routing and reporting are two areas where the product has an added advantage compared to any other product."
"FortiGate NGF is simple compared to other firewalls. It is easy to use and you don't need any training. Any person with basic firewall knowledge can use it."
"FortiGate Next Generation Firewall can be described as the most complete solution."
"I like the common administration and the possibility of adding Fortinet defense systems."
"The most valuable aspects of FortiGate NGFW are its top-notch reputation in peer reviews, user-friendly interface, and excellent support."
"The solution has helped our organization secure our network and connect remote sites."
"The tool's most valuable feature is IPS. In my experience, I haven't encountered any issues with integration. It easily integrates with the FortiGate solution. However, verifying through documentation and assessing their support is necessary."
"The firewall sensor is highly effective, and it's easy to deploy. You can deploy pfSense with limited hardware resources. It's not necessary to have an appliance with much RAM to make it work. It's cost-effective and performs well."
"Sophos Intercept X is scalable. Currently, we have almost 30 people using it in our company."
"The interface is straightforward and easy to use."
"We can run it on any hardware."
"What I found most valuable is the cost of the platform, the flexibility of the platform, and the fact that the ongoing fees are not there as they are with the competitor. Some people may think you're taking a risk with using Opensource. I think it just provides the end user, specifically for us small, medium business providers of services, the flexibility we need at the right cost to provide them a higher end, almost enterprise type service."
"The plugins or add-ons are most valuable. Sometimes, they are free of charge, and sometimes, you have to pay for them, but you can purchase or download very valuable plugins or add-ons to perform internal testing of your network and simulate a denial-of-service attack or whichever attack you want to simulate. You can also remote and monitor your network and see where the gap is. Did you forget a printer port? Most attacks at the moment are happening through printers, and they can tell you immediately that you forgot to close the port of the printer. There are more than one million printers that are in danger, and everybody knows that hackers are using them to enter the network. So, you can download plugins to protect your network."
"The initial setup is not complex."
"I like pfSense's reports and how I can control access to the policies on the firewall."
"Stability and technical support are the two major issues I have found with Fortinet."
"We had some issues in the beginning while setting it up, but after doing the firmware update, it is working fine."
"I have to say that the initial setup was complex. The deployment took a few days to get set up. Initially, we were using an IPVanish. We switched to this tool since we thought it would be easier. But it turns out it wasn't easier to set up and run."
"Due to its higher cost, Fortinet FortiGate can lead to increased operational expenses."
"Fortinet should focus on enhancing the capabilities of FortiGate by consolidating its various products, such as FortiGate Cloud, FortiManager, and FortiAnalyzer."
"I think the only issue that needs improvement is the interface."
"Fortinet Fortigate could benefit by simplifying some of their processes."
"The central management for the FortiGate Fortinet Firewall needs improvement. They have the manager to do the essential management for both SD-WAN and for the security policy. They should also improve the SD-WAN function."
"There are some issues with security features and aspects like logs not being up to the mark."
"FortiGate Next Generation Firewall's performance and threat intelligence could be improved."
"I would like to have SD-WAN as a part of the Next Generation Firewall. It would enhance high availability."
"The solution needs to improve its support."
"Vulnerabilities owing to viruses in the OS need to be reduced in FortiGate Next Generation Firewall from an improvement perspective."
"The management consoles can be improved."
"The pricing of the solution is expensive, so it could be cheaper."
"Being a great product, some changes in the pricing would make it a great choice for even more organizations."
"It would be great to add more to security."
"In terms of areas of improvement, the interface seemed like it had a lot. The GUI interface that I had gotten into was rather elaborate. I don't know if they could zero in on some markets and potentially for small, medium businesses specifically, give them a stripped-down version of the GUI for pfSense."
"A way to clean squid cache from the GUI."
"Ease of use is a problem for a user who is unfamiliar with this product because, in the interface, everything has to be set manually."
"pfSense is not user-friendly. I hope to have something to make the interfaces more user-friendly."
"I tried pfSense, and it has a big issue with file system consistency, and this is what drove me to OPNsense. The file system stability is quite a big issue for us. We have a lot of outages related to power issues, and OPNsense is much more stable on this side."
"There's a bit of a learning curve during the initial implementation."
"It requires more attention to provide a better alternative for open source to small government or educational institutions with reduced budgets in terms of technology."
