We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The pipe filter application is an outstanding feature.""The next-generation firewall is great.""I like that they have given me a solution at a fair price.""You can create multiple Virtual Domains (VDOMs), which are treated as separate firewall instances.""The features that I have found most valuable are the SD-WAN and their IP4 policy.""We were looking for the VPN feature and controlling the inflow and outflow of all the traffic within the site and across the sites. We are also using it for the VPN and VLANs.""The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are the APIs. They are the most widely known.""Reliability is the best feature. We faced some issues when we were setting it up, but the service, portal, and administration are good."

"I can see what traffic is going on. I can easily block any programs from attacks.""This solution is quick and easy to configure.""Our organization's main concern is stability, and this is a stable solution.""I like how you can configure the rules. There is the task for the rules and a task for the network configuration. It also provides SMD filtering, and it can be integrated with the active directory for the users, their mission, and the VPN configuration. We are here in Sudan, and Stormshield didn't work in Sudan for more than a decade. Stormshield is a very strong firewall and very easy to configure and maintain. I am just working with the firewall solution, and we don't have any other solutions like endpoint solutions or something like that.""The most valuable features are the IPS, the firewall function, and the price.""The scalability of the solution is good.""Easily manageable in a variety of environments.""Ease of use is the best feature of the product."

Cons
"Cisco Meraki products are rising very quickly in the cloud and the connected era. Meraki products offer much better ROI, upgradability, and manageability.""The support we receive when we need to upgrade is not satisfactory and has room for improvement.""They should improve high CPU and memory usage that occurs.""Performance and technical support are the main issues with this solution.""There are mainly two areas of improvement in Fortinet FortiGate— the licensing cost and the timing of upgrading licenses for boxes.""I'm not sure if it's something that they already have or are developing something, however, we need some dedicated features for container security.""They have to just improve its performance when we enable all UTM features. When you enable all the features, the performance of FortiGate, as well as of Sophos and SonicWall, goes down.""We would like to have the ability to disable some of the security functionalities."

"Stormshield Network Security is quite expensive.""This is not a next-generation firewall.""This solution has a big problem with web filtering and it needs to be improved.""The biggest issue was their support department was not able to help us, then everything stops. This is a no-go area for me.""Improvement is needed in terms of the technical support of the manufacturer.""Not all the fields are activated yet and we were informed that it will take at least one month.""With Stormshield, there are difficulties joining things, and it can be complex depending on the architecture.""A more user-friendly interface would be helpful."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "For mid-sized companies, they sell their appliances for good prices."
  • "The SN200 series costs between $500 USD and $600 USD per year, whereas the SN700 series costs approximately $1,000 annually."
  • "The pricing could be better."
  • "The price of this solution and the price of support are ok."
  • "We bought a three-year license, and we renew it whenever it expires. The price could be better. It's always very expensive."
  • "I think the price is good."

I have used both Sophos and Fortinet products in production and I have found the Sophos UTM appliances (hardware and virtual) to be a better fit most of the time -- with a few caveats which I will touch on below. In both instances, the transition from TMG will be mostly straightforward. The main hang-ups will be with the VIP/load balancing and SSL. For some reason that completely escapes me, both of these vendors make getting valid certificates onto their boxes unnecessarily difficult -- the Fortinet appliances more so than the Sophos UTM appliances. At one point a Fortinet engineer had to write an entire manual on how to get an SSL certificate uploaded successfully on the 4.x firmware Sophos: The one feature that is missing (and this makes some amount of sense) from the Sophos appliance is BITS caching for updates. Other than that, Sophos offers a full replacement for TMG on UTM9. The XG platform also offers a replacement for the TMG; however, some of the rumblings about upcoming releases suggests that Sophos is going to give XG the Apple iOS treatment and "streamline" the interface...potentially cutting out/hiding some functionality. On the effectiveness of the NGFW, Sophos is mostly good but has a few issues blocking all pieces of an application. For instance, we had to build custom blocking rules for OpenVPN (the vpn was being used to bypass the content filter) because the default Application Control wasn't effectively blocking the application.
