Q&A Highlights
Question: Any users have experience with Veeam Backup Solutions?
Answer: Veeam is a good solution IF you have a Complete Virtual environment....they lack support on physical machines and most environments that have both physical & VM's to manage. The user should also make sure that their BU or replication solution has deduplication for efficiency and Veeam's solution is weak in this area... Regards, Tom

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature of Veeam Backup & Replication is the ease of use.""It's the most easy-to-use backup replication that I have used so far.""Simple and stable.""While I do not recall whether the latest version is 10.0 or 11.0 I do know that it allows one to make a back up repository that is very scalable and simple.""From my experience, Veeam is very good. Its interface is user-friendly. We can restore it whenever. It's not complicated. It's very easy to manage and administration is very easy.""Its portability and being able to back up between different platforms are the most valuable features.""The features I find most valuable are probably the VMware snapshot backups and the Veeam replication. Their replication is very good. It can easily be used for disaster recovery in a number of situations.""I have found the backup call feature very good."

More Veeam Backup & Replication Pros →

"First, I like that this solution is fast. Second, I like the stability and flexibility.""The best feature of Veeam ONE to me is the infrastructure analysis that you can perform before deploying a backup environment. You can put in your backup requirements, for example, repository files and improvements on your VMware side, to ensure that it runs optimally. Pricing for Veeam ONE is also cheaper than VMware vRealize Operations (vROps) which is a direct competitor in the ops space, so this is another advantage of the solution.""As a manager, I find Veeam One's reporting service to be very helpful.""The monthly reports come complete with graphs and summaries, it's really helpful.""The tool is a stable backup solution.""The solution offers a very straightforward setup.""For me, the most important feature is alerting.""The most beneficial aspect of Veeam ONE is the ability to track your company's growth on a month-to-month basis. With this tool, you can determine if you need to purchase more target storage or if you have enough. This is essential for budgeting purposes, as, without this information, you may discover too late that you require additional storage or that your cloud usage is not aligning with what you are being charged. Veeam ONE aids in forecasting and usage analysis, making it a valuable asset."

Cons
"I would like for them to develop the ability to fix the way it does backups. We can't pick a backup for one database. We have to do a backup on the whole Exchange VM. I'd like for them to change it to where we can do individual backups.""I would like to see more broad support for other applications such as databases, or other operating systems.""think backing up from physical servers and ransomware security needs some improvements.""The Cloud version is not ready, they need maturity and ease of deployment in terms of management.""There are certain solutions, such as Rubrik and Cohesity, that are little by little, taking market share. Veeam needs to be more aggressive to keep their dominance in the space.""It would be nice if it could be integrated with third-party solutions like ours. It has been supporting just Windows and virtual machines.""Near-synchronous, better RPO and RTO snapshot-based takes a lot of space and resources.""The data duplication should be improved."

More Veeam Backup & Replication Cons →

"The appliance doesn't have a domain. If there was a competitor with a domain, I'd likely use them.""I face difficulties when trying to deploy Veeam ONE because my active directory restricts some particular rights.""The solution could improve by allowing the ability to do monitoring and traffic aggregation in the whole virtual network environment.""When you have to renew the licenses you sometimes have some trouble getting rid of the old one and reassigning it to the new one. That's an aspect that could run smoother and could be better.""Sometimes, it's a little difficult for me to use its user interface. Its scope is very big with a lot of tuning, settings, and so on. If it's difficult for me, it must also be difficult for our customers.""The solution could improve the performance. We are not able to check the status of any system. Additionally, if there was an option to monitor server clusters it would be helpful.""If you don't have technical knowledge about these services, monitoring the virtual machines is hard.""Creating reports is a bit difficult, and you have to spend some time on it."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If you have Exchange, Oracle, SQL, or a supported SAN, then I suggest getting at least an Enterprise edition. It’ll pay for itself in no time."
  • "The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better."
  • "Room for improvement is actually more in the way of licensing. The really good and useful features are in the Enterprise plus edition, and that one is really expensive."
  • "Since pricing is per socket, it is not expensive to add capacity as you go along."
  • "The licensing is based on the number of cores you have in your ESX or Hyper-V environment."
  • "The price is a bit high. Licensing type is VMware friendly, so it is easy."
  • "I think the price is good when you choose the Essentials Suite, but when you buy a full featured version (for instance the Enterprise Plus) the price is a little bit expensive."
  • "Setup cost and licensing of Veeam are nothing to complain about when compared to similar products for enterprise backup recovery solutions."
  • More Veeam Backup & Replication Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "For what it does, the price is acceptable."
  • "If you have Veeam Backup and Replication with the essential license then this solution is free. If you were to purchase Veeam ONE by itself it is priced cheaper than competitors."
  • "The licenses are code-based or server-based for Veeam ONE. The last version is 12, and it is host-based, I don't like to move to a code-based solution."
  • "Veeam has been raising its prices in the last two years, so it's now lacking some competitiveness in pricing."
  • "I have not used the resale license in our testing environments. Sometimes, our customers used the trial license for 30 days and so on."
  • "I don't pay for the solution, so I can't comment on the cost."
  • "The cost is based on the number of core servers."
  • "Our licensing cost is $200 a year."

I'm not experienced with Veeam rather the backup solution I could recommend is backup exec, that’s the one I have experience with.

Yes I have has a chance to do a POC for the Veeam backup and replication product. And to be honest I had a good experience of trying the product and the capabilities with VMware along with this product are somethings that I was impressed with. Other products can also do almost all the similar things but they in addition to cater to the Virtual environment and are also efficient in handling the physical environments.. But Veeam is purposely built only for virtualized infrastructure.
