Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Instant Backup is an useful feature.""The pricing of the solution is fair.""Veeam is quick, easy to work with, and its support for Microsoft products is good. They also provide adequate solutions for backing up Microsoft applications in the cloud, such as Office 365.""The features that I have found most valuable are its back up and recovery. It is a simplified backup because you can do both databases - VM and HyperV. It's a faster backup than the conventional methods because it takes up the bare metal.""The most valuable feature is that I can back up the whole machine and then restore it relatively fast.""The whole replication aspect of the solution is excellent because it compresses the data so well.""Simple and stable.""Its performance is fine. It supports us very well. It is able to support our policy for RTO, RPO, and other things that we need."

"The backup solution comes in different versions to support different platforms.""The dashboard was good. I loved to see the maintenance dashboard every time I logged on. That was my first screen because it always gave me a reminder of how many days before my next renewal.""It has good stability. Its interface is very good, responsive, and easy for restoring data. I use it for backup, encryption, and restore operations, and it works. I am using many agents from VM to LMDP. I also use an agent for SQL Server, which has advanced options because it is the Enterprise version.""The solution is very fast. It does not take a long time to backup everything.""The solution is good for small and medium-sized businesses.""I have found the overall features of the solution very good and there is the option to backup to the cloud.""The most valuable feature is the ability to back up IBM Power virtual servers.""For us, the main two features that we appreciate in this application are backup and restore. They are the main purposes for which we are using this application."

Cons
"In the past, Veeam had a host-based license, but now it will be part of Microsoft's core license. I don't like this licensing model. Host-based licensing is better for my system. Maybe so other organizations prefer the core-based.""The one downside to Veeam is that they don't have a cloud product of their own.""Unfortunately, the software only runs on Windows.""There is room for improvement in the application backups, particularly for Oracle and SaaS systems. Veeam Backup & Replication offers a plugin specifically designed for Oracle and SAP HANA databases. In version twelve, they introduced enhancements that allow deploying the plugin from the backup server. However, manual configuration is still required on each server to schedule the backup and specify the backup repository. Additionally, transitioning from a Windows server to a Linux server requires converting the existing model. Previously, Veeam heavily relied on Windows and Microsoft SQL databases for their solution. Fortunately, in version twelve, they introduced an enhancement by offering the option to use a Postgres SQL database, which is an open-source alternative.""Veeam Backup & Replication could improve by making it more user-friendly.""We're using both Backup and Replication, Veeam Cloud Connect, and Veeam Office 365. What I am missing is a good graphical user interface between these three products.""The ability to do more backups should be addressed.""Its native capability for talking to the public cloud needs improvement. Connecting to a public cloud is a little bit more of a challenge when it comes to Veeam than it is with Rubrik or Commvault. There are still some hoops that you got to jump through in order to send Veeam backups out to public cloud repositories. It is not as simple as it is with other products."

More Veeam Backup & Replication Cons →

"The licensing packet is confusing. If Veritas could do a better job of clarifying it, that would be helpful.""Whenever a job fails, it would be a great improvement to be able to resume the job from that feature. Suppose a job was started this morning and that it is going on while there are interruptions like network issues, server restart issues, server connectivity issues, services stopping, etc. For some reason, let's assume that the job failed or that it was mistakenly canceled by another person. It will be a great improvement if that failed job can be continued.""Veritas Backup Exec could improve the analytics. If there were some more detail in our scan reports it would be beneficial.""They can work on the issue of the job timing out when it is unable to reach a selection item. It sometimes hangs up on the selection item, thus preventing the job from continuing.""The reports could be made in an easier way.""They could include backup functionality for enterprise environments.""One area that needs improvement is SQL backup. Backup Exec doesn't support higher availability.""The one thing which could be improved, which we have informed Veritas about, is the ability to plug in to the cloud. Meaning, instead of using local storage if we're backing up a small user or end user, we want to be able to make it so they can direct the backups directly to the cloud. It can't be done at the moment. We can only back up to the storage then replicate to the cloud, but we cannot use the cloud as a source of storage."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If you have Exchange, Oracle, SQL, or a supported SAN, then I suggest getting at least an Enterprise edition. It’ll pay for itself in no time."
  • "The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better."
  • "Room for improvement is actually more in the way of licensing. The really good and useful features are in the Enterprise plus edition, and that one is really expensive."
  • "Since pricing is per socket, it is not expensive to add capacity as you go along."
  • "The licensing is based on the number of cores you have in your ESX or Hyper-V environment."
  • "The price is a bit high. Licensing type is VMware friendly, so it is easy."
  • "I think the price is good when you choose the Essentials Suite, but when you buy a full featured version (for instance the Enterprise Plus) the price is a little bit expensive."
  • "Setup cost and licensing of Veeam are nothing to complain about when compared to similar products for enterprise backup recovery solutions."

  • "Pricing is similar, but they don´t offer the same options/technology."
  • "If your company can afford it, go for it."
  • "Depending on the scenario, it can cost less than half of the price of other methods."
  • "It is cheap compared to the other backup technologies. It all depends on the requirements."
  • "I would like to see a better licensing model. They changed it and it's just horrendous."
  • "Veritas licensing is somewhat expensive. They have to decrease the price."
  • "We are satisfied with the price of this solution."
  • "It's a good price for the product."

    Reviews from Real Users

Veeam Backup & Replication is a solution that stands out when compared to many of its competitors. Some of its major advantages are its ease of set up, the fact that it is agentless, and that it has an intuitive dashboard.

A Network Operations Manager at an educational organization says, "Integration with VMware is excellent with very granular recovery."

An Inside Solutions Architect at a tech services company mentions, “I like that it's agent-less, easy to set up, and hardware-agnostic.”

An Account Manager at a tech services company states, “The dashboard is very, very easy to understand. We do demonstrations all the time with customers just to show them. If they've lost particular files because of a server going down, we can retrieve those files for them and quickly bring those files back up.”

Kerem C., Director of Professional Services/Senior Solution Architect/Trainer at a tech services company, explains, “It's good for backup performance management and backup window management.”

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by Veritas Backup Exec users.

An IT Network Analyst at a manufacturing company says, “The backup potential of the solution is very good. It's protected us in the past very well and allowed us to get up and running after an attack with minimal loss. As far as if we need to restore a file, the solution absolutely has improved the way our organization functions. It saves us a lot of time. We're backing up all of our servers with it.”

PeerSpot user Masoud G., Senior Network Administrator at MapnaBE, mentions, “I prefer to use a tape library and Veritas Backup Exec is fully compatible with different tape libraries. So I prefer this software. It also has easy user and file recovery.”

Kayode O., Chief Technology Officer at a tech company, explains, “This solution creates a differential backup to reduce storage requirements. This solution is not complex and you do not have to be too technical to use it. Veritas offers granular restore, which is an option that many other solutions do not have. It allows you to restore, for example, a single SharePoint document, rather than an entire site.”

Rowland G., Product Brand Manager at Epsidon Technology Distribution, states, “The one thing for the last 12 months which has been very good for Veritas was the instance-based license. This means that you're able to license per instance, not only per physical server. And also, the incremental backup which they introduced for virtual servers, where it makes it much quicker to restore, it just automatically is able to mount it back to the original backup. This makes it much quicker when you're doing the restore.”
