Q&A Highlights
Question: Choosing a monitoring solution for cloud services: Azure Monitor vs PRTG Network Monitor
Answer: So a couple of questions and considerations to help you make a good decision. By "cloud services" do you mean multiple services running on one cloud (presumably Azure), or multiple services running on multiple clouds (perhaps Azure/AWS/GCP)? If there is any chance that you are, or are going to be a multi-cloud environment, you should not choose a monitoring solution from a cloud platform vendor. What exactly do you need to monitor? Just the cloud platform itself and its services, the layer of software on top of the cloud (Spring, Kafka, OpenShift, Databases) that the applications rely upon, or all of this and the applications and microservices themselves? If you need to monitor the entire stack (and you should) then you should go with a vendor who has first class cloud infrastructure monitoring AND the ability to monitor your actual applications. Those vendors are Datadog, Dynatrace, New Relic, and IBM (Instana).

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →

Hi to all. On my view, the PRTG would be the better decisionт as external independent solution. In addition, based on my own experience, PRTG is a more flexible tool that can be quickly configured for any task

Zabbix is an open-source monitoring software tool for diverse IT components, including networks, servers, virtual machines (VMs) and cloud services. Zabbix provides monitoring metrics, among others network utilization, CPU load and disk space consumption. Zabbix monitoring configuration can be done using XML based templates which contain elements to monitor. The software monitors operations on Linux, Hewlett Packard Unix (HP-UX), Mac OS X, Solaris and other operating systems (OSes); however, Windows monitoring is only possible through agents. Zabbix can use MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Oracle or IBM DB2 to store data. Its backend is written in C and the web frontend is written in PHP. Zabbix offers several monitoring options:

Simple checks can verify the availability and responsiveness of standard services such as SMTP or HTTP without installing any software on the monitored host.

A Zabbix agent can also be installed on UNIX and Windows hosts to monitor statistics such as CPU load, network utilization, disk space, etc.

As an alternative to installing an agent on hosts, Zabbix includes support for monitoring via SNMP, TCP and ICMP checks, as well as over IPMI, JMX, SSH, Telnet and using custom parameters. Zabbix supports a variety of near-real-time notification mechanisms, including XMPP.

Released under the terms of GNU General Public License version 2, Zabbix is free software.
