Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It is a very stable solution...The initial setup of Avolution ABACUS is very easy.""The ease of modeling and the ease of showing interconnectivity and relationships is the most valuable. It is fairly simple and out of the box. It is customizable in many ways. It is a pretty good tool.""The most valuable feature is that it has a customizable meta-model, which is key.""There are a lot of different features, but the business/decision-maker feature, visibility, and dashboards are most valuable.""The most valuable feature is the traceability, you can trace any object to the other.""The product is easy to use and well-structured for the integrations we need it to make.""The technical support is very good. They are responsive and the answers they provide are detailed.""Scalable and stable tool for roadmapping and modeling, with a good dashboard, end-to-end impact analysis, and portfolio management."

"It gives us the vast ability to churn out-of-the-box reports and have an overview about approach rates and resource utilization.""A lot of of the value is around the project metrics so far but as I get more plugged into the strategic management, it's strategic planning and programs and then tying that into outcomes. I work with executive leadership and that's really what they're looking for, to say, "Okay, what outcomes do we want to achieve and how are we going to get there, plan that out, sequence that out, and then get the work to do that? And then track the work back to where we're headed with our outcomes."""The financial planning capabilities are very useful. We have integration for an SAP system, and so we load financial data from SAP into Planview for prior months. And then we use the forecasting capabilities to get a complete picture of the cost of a specific project. The financial management is very useful.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the completeness of the standard, underlying metamodel.""We're still in an early stage. Things will change as we use it more. I did program reports that are important and that will provide us with value.""The portfolio and technology management are well built.""Planview has helped connect funding and strategic outcomes with work execution. That is the key use that we have for it. We use it to validate the work that we're doing and the funding that we need. The difference between the previous version and current version for us would be the ICPM and the way it gives us different scenarios. We can go in and build that out.""It gives us flexibility in configuring assignments. We can do both Agile Teams and non-Agile Teams. This flexibility affects our ability to meet our company's particular needs by allowing us to work in a hybrid model, some Agile Teams, and some non-Agile Teams."

Cons
"Having more control over page size is lacking in this product. Print utilization also needs to be improved.""If they want to expand in the European market then they are going to have to improve their technical support.""In the future, there could be improvements in integration and enhancements.""Avolution ABACUS has the drawback of needing data filtering at the development level, unlike some tools that offer filtering at deployment. Two areas where Avolution ABACUS could be improved are regional support and flexibility in model selection. Sometimes, it's challenging to access support or updates in certain regions, which can slow down progress. Additionally, it would be beneficial if the tool allowed more flexibility in selecting multiple models within a single unit.""It doesn't have the simulation capability, which would be helpful in doing some business process analysis and improvements.""It is vastly scalable but you can't run it on a Mac or Linux so it has limitations.""The most valuable features are the catalog and the diagram.""They should take more initiative to implement things that competing products have already come out with."

"The UI needs improvement. The UI should have more possibilities for users who are not specialized in using Planview. At the moment, it is more of a technical UI. I would like it to be an open user UI.""We are not very happy with the customer service. This is one of our main pain points. It doesn't cover the entirety of customer service, as there are reps who are really great and we've had good experiences. Many times, we've had people give us attitude, there was a delay in the response, or just a lack of interest. This got to the point where if there was a problem, we would rather try to solve it ourselves then call customer support.""Support is still a challenge. We find it challenging more due to the responsiveness and getting a case or ticket assigned to an analyst. That's what I was just doing. I was following up on an email that we opened last week. We haven't heard anything, so following up on that.""The number one thing that needs improvement is the UI. It should be easy for a casual project manager. It should provide customizable screens that can be a choice for project managers to choose as a professional level, medium level, and a very easy level.""I would like to be able to integrate with Oracle to supplement what we're currently doing with reporting.""The content management definitely needs to improve. We don't really use content management for projects inside Enterprise One. We have actually switched to a SharePoint site. We have a feed from Enterprise One every night of all the projects that are created.""I would like to see more documentation pieces. Right now, they do have the content repository. I would like to see more out-of-the-box features with document repository capabilities.""There's still a lot of reluctance within the organization. We're not using all of the capabilities that we have today. We're still doing our strategic and capital investment planning on spreadsheets rather than using the capabilities that exist within Enterprise One. I definitely need to leverage the experts here at Planview to help drive a culture change. There's just a lot of reluctance on behalf of people within the company to put data into the tool."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "This solution is expensive for some people's budgets and they need to offer a Lite version at a cheaper price"
  • "To get a fairly extensive license for Enterprise Architects from Spark is approximately US $400.00, maybe less, but with Avolution Abacus it was approximately US $2000.00 per year, and that includes maintenance with the Abacus tool."
  • "It is competitive. It is not chump change. I am just using the studio version. I am not using the full enterprise version, which would probably cost me three times more for single-use, but it gives a lot more capability and analysis. It is server-based as well, and it is reasonably priced compared to a lot of the other tools. There are other tools that have other sorts of capabilities, but in order to use them, you'd really have to have like 50 users for the price to become justifiable."
  • "There is a subscription for this solution. We are on an annual subscription because you sometimes receive special offers the longer you subscribe."
  • "I'm paying on a yearly basis. I don't know whether it's a highly expensive tool or not. I'm getting a single version of it, and I don't have the enterprise part on it because I don't need the server component, and I don't need a web browser component. My estimate would be that it's a very reasonably priced tool given that you don't need to have licenses with everyone in order to get the information and the decision support capabilities out of the tool. You use the enterprise edition on top of the studio, which is the heart of the tool. I am not aware of any additional costs."
  • "The cost of Avolution ABACUS is reasonable, given the features they offer in comparison to other tools."
  • "The pricing is quite good compared to the competition and it is part of the reason we chose the product."
  • "My company makes annual payments toward the licensing costs of the solution. Considering the product's capabilities, its prices are very reasonable."

  • "The licensing part is a bit costly in comparison with the other available PPM tools."
  • "We are on the Flex licenses."
  • "We have unlimited licenses for all of our functionalities. Since we went global, we went with that model."
  • "The cost of other pieces and integrating them in needs improvement."
  • "We have portfolio managers, resource managers, project managers, and time reporting licenses. These are the licenses that we have."
  • "I don't think we have necessarily purchased everything that I would have liked to have seen."
  • "We have several hundred licenses. It costs us several hundred thousand dollars a year."
  • "We overbought our licenses. We looked at our needs three to four years down the road and tried based our contract on that. However, we were over aggressive. We use about a third of the licenses that we have. We're looking to adjust the makeup so we can start utilizing the amount of money that we are spending. Right now, we're overspending, and my organization is not seeing the value in Planview because we are paying so much for licenses that we're not using."
