Executive Summary
Updated on May 3, 2023

We performed a comparison between AWS Backup and Veeam Backup & Replication based on our users’ reviews in four categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.

  • Ease of Deployment: While both solutions are described as easy to set up, the deployment of AWS Backup is noted to potentially be a bit complex, because of the specific knowledge needed for the system configuration.
  • Features: AWS Backup features a user-friendly interface and straightforward cloud-native backup capabilities that are described as an advantage over its competitors. However, its restoration functionality, granular file restoration, and automatic restoration features need improvement. Veeam Backup & Replication offers valuable backup capabilities, short file recovery periods, and automatically adapts to the environment it’s installed in. Its support for non-Windows systems and databases, patching, and cloud integration all need to be improved.
  • Pricing: AWS Backup’s licensing is described as good and offers potential discounts to companies that use it long-term. Veeam’s price is said to need improvement but the service also offers a free edition for smaller companies.
  • Service and Support: Both solutions’ technical support teams are described as excellent and timely, and provide satisfying assistance.

Comparison results: Based on the parameters we compared, Veeam Backup & Replication comes out ahead of AWS Backup. While the two solutions offer valuable backup functions and capabilities, AWS Backup’s need for manual recovery, potentially lengthy setup, and restoration features leave room for improvement.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature is the daily incremental site backup.""The most valuable feature is its ease of use.""The auto-scaling feature and the time efficiency of setting up AWS Backup are the most valuable aspects for us.""What I like about AWS Backup is its simple approach to a complex problem.""AWS Backup's most valuable feature is that you can configure it remotely to create backups.""When I was using an on-premises backup, there was an external hard drive or something like that. I had a backup server, but I had a few problems related to transfer when I had to restore something that I have deleted. I had to wait for after-office hours to do something like that, but now I just have to send a mail. Within one hour, I have my restored file.""It works well as a backup and as a service.""It also saves costs and is quick."

"Its performance is fine. It supports us very well. It is able to support our policy for RTO, RPO, and other things that we need.""It is cost-effective. A lot of times, people pick Veeam because of its price.""The setup was straightforward Veeam Backup Replication. NetBackup is a larger solution and takes more time to implement but Veeam Backup Replication takes approximately 40 days.""The peace of mind of the backup is very important. Incremental backups make it fast and easy to use. We can recover from any failures in case of any hardware failures or malware attacks. We can do a rollback and recover our services with a little downtime. We can rollback even in the case of unsuccessful updates.""The most valuable feature is the ease of use.""The pricing of the solution is fair.""Veeam Backup Replication's most valuable features are the ease of use and the interface is very configurable for the users. It's a very familiar solution in Algeria.""I like Veeam a lot because it solves problems, is stable, and runs very well."

Cons
"If AWS could also add some hybrid cloud features to AWS Backup, that would be a significant improvement. For example, currently, AWS Backup only backs up to the S3 and Amazon Cloud, and you can only restore from the Amazon Cloud only. However, some people have hybrid environments. They have some workloads on-premises and some workloads in the cloud.""AWS Backup could improve because you cannot use Glacier or anything but EFS.""It requires a lot of time to connect the snapshot, identify the files, and restore a single file manually.""The tool is a good fit if your environment is VM-specific. However, it might not be the most suitable option if you have physical servers or an on-premise setup.""One of the limitations of AWS Backup is that it only does file-based copying.""If AWS Backup were a hybrid solution that also supported on-premises backups then it would be very helpful, especially if you are doing a migration to the cloud.""The initial setup of the solution is complex.""There are some limitations to partial backup in AWS Backup."

More AWS Backup Cons →

"Some support replies for a broken backup task have been "rebuild the job from scratch" and this is a bad thing to do if you have many VMs and repositories.""The Veeam backup application interface is application-based and not web-based.""My main concern about Veeam is that I hope our backups will still be secure in the event of a security incident such as a ransomware attack. In Veeam version 11 they do state that there is ransomware protection, but until it has been proven to be effective, I don't have any assurance that it will prevent data loss.""If a single file is corrupt then the restoration of the entire backup will fail.""We try to compare Veeam with other solutions because we are the operations. Then we can give the answers for improvement which is the specific additional system features that other solutions provide.""It needs to offer an automatic check for backups.""The stability for AIX machines could be better.""In terms of what could be improved, when creating a backup job with Veeam, you can create a daily backup, but it doesn't do it within that job. It does not give you the ability to also set the terms for monthly and/or weekly backups. It has to be a separate job. It gets clunky to manage the timeframes where you don't want a daily to run on this day and creating weeklies. And you don't want a daily to run on this day doing monthlies. That is hard to deal with. It would be really nice if you could do it through a single command line or a single interface."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We don't use a lot of space, only approximately 900 GB, so the price is reasonable. For standing, it's okay. We normally do a payment to SSML, and they are the ones who pay over there. It is around $100 monthly."
  • "There is a lot of flexibility with the services and pricing. The price is reasonable when compared to other products. This is very good for us."
  • "There are no licensing costs for AWS Backup. You pay only for the amount of backup storage you use and then the data transferred between regions. Overall AWS Backup is priced reasonably."
  • "Our customers pay a monthly AWS fee that includes the AWS Backup service."
  • "The solution's price is reasonable."
  • "Price-wise, I rate the solution a six out of ten. One only has to pay for the storage cost of AWS solutions, which is the standard cost provided by AWS."
  • "Its price is much cheaper than some vendors but more expensive than others."
  • "The pricing is decent."

  • "If you have Exchange, Oracle, SQL, or a supported SAN, then I suggest getting at least an Enterprise edition. It’ll pay for itself in no time."
  • "The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better."
  • "Room for improvement is actually more in the way of licensing. The really good and useful features are in the Enterprise plus edition, and that one is really expensive."
  • "Since pricing is per socket, it is not expensive to add capacity as you go along."
  • "The licensing is based on the number of cores you have in your ESX or Hyper-V environment."
  • "The price is a bit high. Licensing type is VMware friendly, so it is easy."
  • "I think the price is good when you choose the Essentials Suite, but when you buy a full featured version (for instance the Enterprise Plus) the price is a little bit expensive."
  • "Setup cost and licensing of Veeam are nothing to complain about when compared to similar products for enterprise backup recovery solutions."

    Reviews from Real Users

Veeam Backup & Replication is a solution that stands out when compared to many of its competitors. Some of its major advantages are its ease of set up, the fact that it is agentless, and that it has an intuitive dashboard.

A Network Operations Manager at an educational organization says, "Integration with VMware is excellent with very granular recovery."

An Inside Solutions Architect at a tech services company mentions, “I like that it's agent-less, easy to set up, and hardware-agnostic.”

An Account Manager at a tech services company states, “The dashboard is very, very easy to understand. We do demonstrations all the time with customers just to show them. If they've lost particular files because of a server going down, we can retrieve those files for them and quickly bring those files back up.”

Kerem C., Director of Professional Services/Senior Solution Architect/Trainer at a tech services company, explains, “It's good for backup performance management and backup window management.”
