Seamless and user-friendly experience for small or mid-level businesses at reasonable price
Pros and Cons
  • "Dell Unity XT is user-friendly and easy to use."
  • "It isn't easy to find trusted partners for the product. The solution has issues with mid-level storage and does not come with enterprise storage."

What is our primary use case?

We are using it as a unified storage solution for different workloads, databases, and data backup.

How has it helped my organization?

It provides simplified deployment, monitoring and management of storage resources. It is very user-friendly.

What is most valuable?

Facilitated optimization of the storage utilization is a really good benefit.

What needs improvement?

One of the major challenges we faced with this solution was regarding DPE. When the failure of DPE happens, it needs to be replaced with another part as Dell Unity XT offers a single data processor. Finding the replacement can be a complex task because it's hard to search for the exact part number since that information is not as public as other solutions, such as HPE, provide. Also, since it requires extensive research of the product, it's not very secure. Working on the complexity of these issues would be helpful.

I have been using Dell Unity XT for approximately four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We are highly pleased with the level of the stability so I am rating it ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Dell Unity XT offers good performance in general with minor limitations regarding mid-level storage. I don't think it's suitable for large enterprise models. I rate it seven out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

Dell Unity XT offers reasonable support, but due to political reasons, my company is under sanctions, so I rate it five out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

When I started working with databases, I immediately started with Dell EMC. Later on, I discovered different solutions and choices such as Fujitsu, HPE, Hitachi, NetApp, and Sophos, but it is not possible to implement any of the mentioned solutions due to geopolitical reasons and issues with licensing.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very easy. This solution is a good fit due to its user-friendly nature regarding implementing and managing the operations. It took approximately two hours to complete the whole process.

What about the implementation team?

The deployment process went really easy with two specialists from our IT department. It is important to note that the efficiency and effectiveness also depend on the expertise of the people operating the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing structure offers a favorable balance between the cost and the variety of features offered.

What other advice do I have?

I am fairly satisfied with this solution. It is a good choice for small or medium enterprises. I rate it seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Pros and Cons
  • "It is scalable, and we usually recommend Dell Unity XT to small and medium companies."
  • "It's an expensive solution, particularly for medium companies. One device costs about 30,000 euros. The support contract is quite expensive as well. We are currently looking for other lower-cost solutions."

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with this solution for about six to seven years. It is deployed on-premises and on the cloud.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable, and we usually recommend Dell Unity XT to small and medium companies.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate technical support at eight out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

It takes about eight hours to get Dell Unity XT up and running. Fine tuning may take longer.

The installation can be managed by two people and the configuration by one person.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's an expensive solution, particularly for medium companies. One device costs about 30,000 euros. The support contract is quite expensive as well. We are currently looking for other lower-cost solutions.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate Dell Unity XT at six out of ten because it's an expensive solution.

Easy to use with a good response time and very reliable
Pros and Cons
  • "It is easy to set up the solution."
  • "We cannot connect directly with Dell due to sanctions."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for storage for our online services.

What is most valuable?

The response time is good. It is suitable.

The product is easy to use. It's not complicated at all.

We do have some sanctions in our country, and this solution is one of the options we have available to us.

It is easy to set up the solution.

What needs improvement?

You need to self-study. We'd like, however, to get professional training. It would be ideal to have some online sources available to us to help us understand its capabilities.

We cannot connect directly with Dell due to sanctions. We'd like to be able to connect to the distributor directly as sometimes we sometimes get the wrong information. It would help with transparency.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been dealing with the solution for about six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It has been really stable up to this point. There are no bugs or glitches. It does not crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are three of us using the solution. We have more than 3,000 customers using the product.

It's scalable. Everyone has been pretty happy with its capabilities.

How are customer service and support?

I've never dealt with technical support in the past.

How was the initial setup?

The product is not complicated to set up. The implementation is simple.

It is quick to deploy. It took us about three weeks.

We gathered the hardware, and we used the servers to connect to the host. It was pretty simple.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the deployment in-house with instructions or by looking at YouTube for direction.

What was our ROI?

We have not witnessed an ROI at this point. That said, we do see that it is worth the money.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'm not sure of the exact licensing cost of the solution.

What other advice do I have?

We are a broker. We're users. We are medium-sized, not enterprise-sized.

I'd recommend the solution to others. It is easy to use, scalable, and easy to set up.

I would rate the solution eight out of ten.

Data storage solution used for block storage to the cloud and facilitates archiving and backups
Pros and Cons
    • "This is a tier-three solution and it gives us what we need for archiving and backups."
    • "We have only used this solution for less than one year so I don't have any improvements suggestions yet."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for block storage delivery to the cloud.

How has it helped my organization?

This solution provided us with the capability to manage expiring equipment that we didn't have before.

    What is most valuable?

This is a tier-three solution and it gives us what we need for archiving and backups.

    What needs improvement?

We have used this solution for less than one year so I don't have any improvement suggestions yet.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for less than one year.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support for this solution is good. I would rate it an eight out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have previously used HPE 3PAR 7400. We switched over to Dell Unity because 7400 was being retired and did not offer two-factor authentication. The biggest difference between the two solutions is security and Dell is offered at a lower price point.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. Deployment took less than two days. However, to get all the paperwork through the government officials took about six weeks.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

    We evaluated HPE Nimble.

What other advice do I have?

Generally, one person is required to do the maintenance. There are eight of us that can do the maintenance in our company. Overall this solution provides exactly what we needed, which is fiber channel block storage in the cloud.

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    Private Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Impressive inline data reduction, but the UI could be more user-friendly
    Pros and Cons
    • "Inline data reduction is pretty impressive."
    • "The user interface could be improved. The Dell Compellent user interface is fantastic, but the Unity user interface is, in comparison, pretty lousy. It's functional, and I can do what I need, but the Dell Compellent user interface is so much more intuitive and user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

It's used for general storage or backup storage throughout the environment.

    What is most valuable?

Inline data reduction is pretty impressive.

    What needs improvement?

The user interface could be improved. The Dell Compellent user interface is fantastic, but the Unity user interface is, in comparison, pretty lousy. It's functional, and I can do what I need, but the Dell Compellent user interface is so much more intuitive and user-friendly.

I wish that the product had some more flexibility. It seems it's purposely designed to not have a lot of flexibility, and as a customer, I don't appreciate it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for three years or so.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I've had some unexpected quirkiness, but for the most part, it's pretty good. Its stability is an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

As long as you're buying the right product, it's probably an eight out of ten in terms of scalability. What you don't want to do is get locked into something you don't want. If you want a hybrid, such as a spinning disk in a solid state, you have to know that upfront. That's because some of the models restrict to only SSD. Later on or down the road, if you want the spinning disk for cold storage, it doesn't happen. You can't convert it. You have to get a different array or something else.

How are customer service and support?

Their technical support can be very good. It depends on who you get, but that's how it's with any support organization. The individual makes a difference, but generally, their support has been pretty good. The only thing that I don't like is that you sometimes have to wait to get to a support engineer, but they've gotten better at that.

    How was the initial setup?

I would rate it a seven out of ten in terms of the ease of the setup.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate it a seven out of ten.

A solution with great stability and easy-to-use replication tools
    Pros and Cons
    • "The solution allows for easy, useful replication with good features for VPLEX and VIVO."
    • "The solution should include a free process in the HPE portal that uses serial numbers to verify that hardware is genuine."

What is our primary use case?

We are resellers and deploy the solution for our clients as a guard for storage on virtual machines, databases, and their VDI.

    What is most valuable?

The solution allows for easy, useful replication with good features for VPLEX and VIVO.

    What needs improvement?

The solution should include a free process in the HPE portal that uses serial numbers to verify that hardware is genuine. We find Chinese hardware easily but it is difficult to determine if it is genuine which causes problems.

The solution should allow for connection and replication with other storage models such as HPE, IBM, and Hitachi.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable and I rate it a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable within the storage limitations for each model.

For example, category 380 allows for one device. To scale up, you need to add additional software or hardware like VPLEX.

I rate the scalability a ten out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

Our company handles software issues but uses technical support for hardware replacements.

Due to sanctions in Iran, I am not permitted to contact technical support directly but must submit issue tickets through authorized agents. I am unable to rate technical support because I do not have direct access to them.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy.

Depending on the size of the project, we assign two to ten engineers for setup and deployment which can take a total of one to three hours.

We also provide six hours administrative training to our customers via small, on-the-job courses we have created.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Most licenses for the solution are free but upgrades are available when adding additional software or storage.

The solution little or no cost so I rate it a ten out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

Supply of genuine hardware is challenging and there should be more availability in the market. I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises

Simplifies file and block data configuration, management, and protection
    Pros and Cons
    • "Scheduled components are sourced from Korea based on their quality selection, with the actual purchase taking place in Vietnam. The notable features include cache memories and MOS feeder in Dell Unity. Additionally, the storage dynamics are managed uniformly on a global scale, whether it is a simple or wide-ranging configuration."
    • "The support team is well-versed in the AMG solution, having received comprehensive training. They also boast strong partnerships in both VNAM and Korea. The system's user-friendliness is a primary consideration in their choice of solution, emphasizing the importance of service. They place a strong emphasis on service, occasionally requiring approvals. However, with full installations, they have achieved almost uniformity. Their storage approach differs from a consolidated business-based model; instead, it is application-centric. Their investment in solutions is geared towards specific needs, such as the banking or information system, acquiring smaller storage units individually."

What is our primary use case?

We currently provide data solutions to both HP and a banking client. The banking client utilizes our DNS solution. I have introduced our kit for selling the smart technology integrated into our offerings.

    What is most valuable?

Scheduled components are sourced from Korea based on their quality selection, with the actual purchase taking place in Vietnam.

The storage dynamics are managed uniformly on a global scale, whether it is a simple or wide-ranging configuration.

    What needs improvement?

They place a strong emphasis on service, occasionally requiring approvals. However, with full installations, they have achieved almost uniformity. Their storage approach differs from a consolidated business-based model; instead, it is application-centric. Their investment in solutions is geared towards specific needs, such as the banking or information system, acquiring smaller storage units individually.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The discussion revolves around the Ports program, which has been implemented and operates as a single system based on my direction. Additionally, adherence to government requirements is necessary.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The preference for Unity arises from its investor-driven segmentation, specifically tailored for application data systems, eschewing any consolidation. Despite possessing numerous units, there is doubt whether it is feasible to invest exclusive authority for each application separately, eliminating the need for consolidation.

The consideration of scalability introduces the ability to simply add on hardware, particularly with SaaS and HTTP. However, certain aspects, such as metadata or previous HTTP pages, present challenges that necessitate careful attention.

How are customer service and support?

The initial support for the second job from PA in Vietnam is highly commendable and competes well. Moreover, my NDA has proven to be exceptionally effective.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

    How was the initial setup?

We are currently undergoing a conversion involving the installation of hardware and configuration. Initially, the focus was on infrastructure areas, specifically addressing endpoint agents. Subsequently, the emphasis shifted towards application-centric operations. I oversee the configuration and setup, encompassing both hardware and software aspects.

The hardware setup is primarily based on production, involving tasks such as TCDR for the production environment. They initially acquired storage from Zero Ten, utilizing EMC. Over time, they transitioned to HTTP storage, and presently, they are considering a comprehensive replacement of their storage solution. The ongoing shift is towards a more advanced data system, albeit not classified as high-end.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is an average priced solution.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate it 8 out of 10.

A storage solution with a good technical support and easy deployment phase, offering high stability
    Pros and Cons
    • "It is a stable solution that sells a lot...The deployment phase of the product was very easy."
    • "The only issue is with the product's scalability because it's not as scalable as the other polished tools in the market."

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of the solution is that it is a unified storage, and it is useful for mid-range storage. All the SME clients of our company that we have here trying to implement SAP want to use the three-tier architecture for server storage, and they all find that Dell Unity XT is one of the leading products, and our company sells a lot of boxes because of the aforementioned reason.

    What needs improvement?

I don't see any weaknesses in the product, nor did any of our company's clients report any issues. The only issue is with the product's scalability because it's not as scalable as the other polished tools in the market.

It would be good if Dell could work a little bit on the scalability front and make sure that they increase the bandwidth at the back end as well as make the product a more capacity-oriented one, and provide one petabyte to make the solution easier to use.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell Unity XT for six to seven years. I am a system integrator. My company has a partnership with Dell. I am also a reseller of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable solution that sells a lot. Though we have sold Dell Unity XT to bigger companies, it is Dell PowerStore that we have sold the most to bigger companies that have around 1,000 to 5,000 users.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product's scalability has some issues.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's technical support is very good. We haven't faced any issues with the support team. I rate the technical support a nine out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Dell Unity XT, we were familiar with IBM and had sold a lot of IBM Storwize V3700 storage boxes.

The storage boxes by IBM are not number one in the market since they were not unified storage but SAN storage. Though IBM launched unified storage, our company does not sell much of IBM. After IBM launched unified storage, they allowed Lenovo to sell off their storage, and our company stopped selling IBM products.

    How was the initial setup?

The deployment phase of the product was very easy.

The solution can be deployed in four to five hours.

I need two certified personnel in NetApp and Dell to carry out the deployment process.

    What about the implementation team?

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Dell Unity XT's prices are very competitive compared to HP MSA2000, an entry-level product and another higher-level storage box. Compared to the prices of the storage boxes offered by HP, Dell's prices are competitive.

All the licenses are included from day one of your purchase of the product, so you don't have to buy licenses separately. There are no additional costs to be paid for the maintenance of the solution.

What other advice do I have?

I suggest to those planning to buy the solution to buy it with a five-year warranty rather than the standard three-year warranty provided by Dell since it will be, price-wise, cheap for them. It is better to negotiate during the current because later on, the prices for the warranty will increase from ten percent to twenty percent, and you will stand to lose if you don't sign up for a five-year warranty offered by Dell.

I rate the overall product a nine out of ten.
