It brings reliability and security to our environment.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features for us in our experience has definitely been the security and reliability it brings to our environment. We know that our data is safe and secure and that Database is incredibly stable. There's a peace of mind that it affords us.

How has it helped my organization?

Because it's secure and reliable, we can have confidence that we can just go on with business as usual. We're able to focus our efforts on more important aspects of our business instead of worrying about threat protection and lost data.

What needs improvement?

I've been very happy with the progression of the product. One thing I would like to see is a better feature set for pluggable databases, that is, the multi-tenancy of the database. It's still in its infancy at the moment and I'd like to see in 13c a big leap forward with better support for multi-tenancy.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with Oracle databases for over 16 years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We haven't had any issues with deployment.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Database has always been solid. There's been a couple little buggy things at the beginning, because I was working with version 7, but from 8i onwards, everything was solid.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There's absolutely no problem scaling it. They give you plenty of options and a lot of best practice in order to be able to do that.

How are customer service and support?

I've always been very happy with Oracle support. I think probably the one thing that I'd like to be able to have is more input into is the feature set for the next release.

The most valuable component of the new version 12c is the additional processing power it provides.

Valuable Features

As we're already Oracle customers, we're upgrading from version 11g to 12c. The most valuable component of the new version 12c is the additional processing power it provides.

Improvements to My Organization

For what we primarily do, we do heavy processing of OLTP and OLAP. We've used DB for some additional success in that regard.

Room for Improvement

The middleware, particularly Oracle Fusion, is what concerns us most and what we think needs the most improving.

Deployment Issues

We've had no issues with deploying it.

Stability Issues

There have been various stability issues so far, but the main concern, again, is the middleware. We're looking for some improvements in those areas.

Scalability Issues

We've had no issues scaling it for our needs.

Customer Service and Technical Support

We use technical support all the time. Whenever we run into any issues, we open up Oracle SRs. We get responses and we integrate them into our system, and we generally close out the issues successfully.

Initial Setup

I've been involved in all of our major upgrades and it's never straightforward. There are always complications because of the complexity of it all.

Other Advice

You probably need to consider some onsite support as much as possible because I'm not sure if the SR process is the best way to go. You probably need some expertise right there onsite that's familiar with your specific firm or agency. It's always difficult if you're just doing SRs.

A powerful Relational Database Management System that offers a large feature set

Valuable Features:

• Oracle ensures high level security by performing each transaction in isolation from others. The database management as well as user management of oracle is very effective • Provides data consistency as well as data concurrency. • Oracle database guarantees that the data returned by a single query is committed and consistent with respect to a single point in time. • Supports very large size databases. So it is very beneficial for multinational organizations having billion of records. • Oracle database ensures high level availability by providing solutions for fixing problems rapidly and minimize both planned and unplanned downtime. These solutions help enterprises maintain business continuity 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Room for Improvement:

• Due to its high cost, oracle is not the first priority for the organizations having budget constraints. • A full time oracle Administration staff is always needed for the complex configuration of oracle. • After installation, oracle drains lot of memory causing slow performance of system • Oracle is not popular with open source code. MYSQL is a better option.

Other Advice:

Oracle is a powerful relational database management system that ensures high level security, consistency and data concurrency. Oracle architecture is split between the logical design and the physical design. This structure means that for large-scale distributed computing, the data location seems local and transparent to the user, allowing for a more modular physical structure that can be added to and altered without affecting the activity of the database, its data, or users. The sharing of resources in this way allows for very flexible data networks whose capacity can be adjusted up or down to suit demand, without degradation of service. It also allows for a robust system to be devised as a single point failure can’t bring down the whole database across a network.

Beware: Need to monitor disk space

One thing that is annoying is the need to monitor the disk space available. In Oracle, the DBMS can monitor the utilization of a data file(s) but when the data files become full, the DBMS cannot just add a new data file and continue. Everything comes to a deadly halt. This approach makes no sense because the solution is just to add a new data file. So all that Oracle has to provide for are the parameters we want for all data files that are added "automagically" and we do not then run into such deadly issues.

We have a script which monitors space left based on what the user_segments reports as used. We have also started to use bigfIle tablespaces.

We have seen an improvement in stability

What is our primary use case?

Storage of data and alerts.

How has it helped my organization?

In the past we used another product. Since the switch to Oracle the stability has improved.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We had some issues with the scalability but we managed to find a solution without overturning everything or having to go back to the basics.

How is customer service and technical support?

The reason I do not give this product a 10 out of 10 is because of the technical support. This is an area where they need to improve. It takes too long. If you have an issue that is very complicated, not something that you can find a solution for on the internet, that you need an engineer to help with, it takes too long. Very often, I find the solution by myself and give up on the support.

What other advice do I have?

When choosing a vendor it's important to me that it is a good brand, that they have a good name in the market, and that the solution comes closest to meeting my needs.

I would definitely recommend this solution.

It's scalable and easy to figure out. Basic database knowledge should be sufficient.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the scalability of the database.

How has it helped my organization?

I see an increase in efficiency and reduction of man hours. There is faster response time on the queries and better performance on them.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see improvements with caching. I know there are some technologies within Oracle which could deliver more in-memory caching.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked into Microsoft SQL. We didn't like it nor see it as an enterprise-level solution. Oracle has more features in terms of administration.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution based on the track record, performance, and the support. It's really easy to figure out. I wouldn't think anybody needs any training on it. The basic knowledge of any database should be sufficient.

Usability is the biggest value.

Valuable Features:

Usability is the biggest value of Oracle Database.

Improvements to My Organization:

Compared to the previous version, this version has really improved in terms of the speed.

Room for Improvement:

We want Oracle to specify the differences between the two versions, the former version and the newer version and how it is linked.

Not only with one version differences but older versions as well since there are people who are using much older versions. If they are able to clarify what the difference is between the latest one and those older versions, and if they are able to offer us the easier method for the migration, then we would appreciate it.

Stability Issues:

Even if we encounter any problems, then there's a strong definition of how we are able to improve the situation and resolve the situation. We are able to do the backup beforehand by referring to those defined resolutions from the Oracle, and if we are able to have the two systems, then even if one fails, we are able to use the other one, so we are able to prevent problems.

Scalability Issues:

In comparison to other more simple structure databases, I consider the Oracle Database to be more scalable, as well as easiness to export from an external system.

Other Advice:

For people who are thinking about introducing Oracle Databases - they need to have knowledge beforehand about how to operate the databases in terms of security, and how to respond to the failures.

Great performance, very easy to use, and extremely stable
Pros and Cons
  • "The performance of the solution is impeccable."
  • "While working with 20-30 terabytes is okay using this solution, if you have Big Data, data that's much bigger than that, you will run into issues. It's a problem I have right now. They should support much more data."

What is most valuable?

The performance of the solution is impeccable.

The simplicity and ease of use is fantastic. Compared to other databases, it's not a complex tool to manage.

What needs improvement?

While working with 20-30 terabytes is okay using this solution, if you have Big Data, data that's much bigger than that, you will run into issues. It's a problem I have right now. They should support much more data.

Aside from that, the solution isn't lacking any features that I can think of. It's an almost perfect solution, aside from the data issues we face.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for many years. It's been a long time.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is extremely stable. There are no problems with it there. There aren't bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or fail. It's completely reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is a problem for us. We need something that can handle Big Data. By Big Data, I mean more than 30 terabytes of data. Anything under that, and the solution might scale okay, however, for us, scalability is a problem because of the vast amounts of data we need to work with.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is excellent. They're really great. I have no complaints in regards to the level of support they provide to us. We've been satisfied with their service.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I've looked at Axway Data, and it is a very good solution as well, however, it is a bit expensive and offers little support for very Big Data.

What other advice do I have?

We work closely with many integrator companies, however, we don't have a business relationship with Oracle. I'm a technical architect, so I just make some recommendations, and that's all.

I'd recommend the solution, so long as you aren't working with very very Big Data like we are. I could also recommend Axway, which I believe is also good.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
