The solutions web version makes it comparably easy to blend data
Pros and Cons
  • "I like the solution's web version, more so than Power BI's web version. It just makes it easier to drag and drop things and to blend data on the backend. It simplifies the process."
  • "The charting is overly complex in comparison with Power BI's"

What is our primary use case?

We are using the latest version.

What is most valuable?

I like the solution's web version, more so than Power BI's web version. It just makes it easier to drag and drop things and to blend data on the backend. It simplifies the process.

What needs improvement?

The charting is overly complex in comparison with Power BI's

The calculations are harder, as the focus is on a little level of detail instead of on making a column. Power BI and Tableau are a bit more detailed when it comes to creating calculations. It's not possible to merely add two columns together, but there is a need to build a calculation. Simply put, calculations can be a little more complex in Tableau. I'd like to see the ability just to add and subtract columns, to make it like a wizard.

For how long have I used the solution?

We are currently using Tableau

Amazing dynamic parameters, numerous customization, and superior customer service
Pros and Cons
  • "I love the customization skills that Tableau has, it is not restricted to what is built-in already."
  • "With performance tuning, it generates a pretty complex query when it is not required."

What is our primary use case?

I am into a new healthcare domain. I publish my dashboards and my audience are the providers.

How has it helped my organization?

I am not well-versed with the latest 2020 version of the solution, but I have heard that it has made parameters dynamic. For example, when we are publishing the dashboards, if we want the dashboards to be set as a default as the previous month, we do not have to modify it again and again. It can republish month after month using an assigned default. This will save me time from not having to redo the dashboard all the time. The dynamic parameters are amazing in Tableau, it has been improved in the latest version.

What is most valuable?

I love the customization skills that Tableau has, it is not restricted to what is built-in already. We have many customizable options and they come out to be very fancy and beautiful charts. Also, I like the extract feature that makes my dashboard run faster. The low-level security that Tableau handles works well. This solution is user-friendly and suitable for any type of user. Lastly, the dashboard and reports are very user-friendly to navigate.

What needs improvement?

This solution has some features which really needs to be improved. For example, the sorting feature, If we compare it with ClixSense, ClixSense has a direct sorting feature available to users. Wherein Tableau, we have to go and create a parameter, make it dynamic, force users to click somewhere else on the filter, and then maybe you can sort it. Tableau is really new for sorting features.

With performance tuning, it generates a pretty complex query when it is not required. We do not actually write 100 lines of code for a single KPI indicator. What we do is run the performance tuning model which will give 100-200 lines of code for a single KPI. That is not exactly an optimized query. While running performance tuning on the query, it should be pretty optimized, but it does not seem to be doing this.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is fairly stable. However, the issue is when it is time to upgrade. Upgrading a Tableau server is too tedious compared to other tools where normally you just have an update EXE file you run and it is done. This is not the case with Tableau, it requires the dashboard to go down for an hour and then we have to republish all the dashboards again.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable without a doubt.

How are customer service and technical support?

This solution has the best technical support compared to any tool.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is expensive but it depends on the customer's needs which will determine the cost of the licensing. How much they require and what package they want.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have evaluated ClixSense in the past. With ClixSense, it is not as customizable as this solution, I would even say restricted. For each and every customization and format change, the basic stuff, it asks us to buy another extension. We will not be doing that.

What other advice do I have?

This solution has broadened my VA exposure and it has allowed me to do things differently with respect to VA concepts and visualization. I have a great takeaway from my experience with the solution.

I would recommend Tableau because of the amazing dashboards that are appealing and that also gives us the ability to create with far better customizations.

I rate Tableau an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

I can upload excel files and visualize the information with details

What is our primary use case?

In particular, I believe in the ease that Tableau provides for generating statistics and content in real time. We no longer use the old system where we must load the data one by one, and with just one click, I can see all the information I need.

How has it helped my organization?

It has facilities that improve some aspects inside and outside of work. We use it basically to see statistics and locate focal studies to make decisions.

What is most valuable?

With Tableau, I can upload excel files and visualize the information with details.

Another aspect is that I can organize the information with the data I have as dates of income, expenses, and annuals.

What needs improvement?

To improve the next version, it is important to highlight the use of the tool in other languages. This includes internal handling and updates.

For how long have I used the solution?

Less than one year.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have never used a similar solution. It is my first time using this tool, and from the time of usage, it facilitates the process of information analysis.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Mainly, there is a free download version but with limitations that allow the user to evaluate and then contact the service provider for their respective installation and deployment.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have not reviewed other options. I think it does not exist; if it exists, I would know and leave a record to compare these tools.

What other advice do I have?

This software must be managed on mobile devices in several languages.

Self-service; users can build their own reports based on their needs
Pros and Cons
  • "It provides business users with a tool, so they are not dependent on IT."
  • "Analysis is now more visual than in the past."
  • "Bursting email is needed to deliver the reports to many people in their inboxes and this functionality is not provided by Tableau."

What is our primary use case?

  • Create dashboards for different functions in the organization.
  • Used to report out information from the corporate data repository.

How has it helped my organization?

It provides business users with a tool, so they are not dependent on IT.

What is most valuable?

  • Visual analytical reporting
  • Ad hoc reporting
  • Self-service; users can build their own reports based on their needs.
  • Drag and drop to create analytical dashboards.
  • Multiple data sources connectors

What needs improvement?

Needs bursting email and export to Excel. Many users still need to download the information (to Excel) and export to an Excel macro to merge the info with some other info.

Bursting email is also needed to deliver the reports to many people in their inboxes and this functionality is not provided by Tableau.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Analysis is now more visual than in the past, which was only long operational support reports with bunches of info.

The most valuable feature of Tableau is the possibility to provide an overall view of the analysis done and let the users get the visualization the way they need/want.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Tableau is the possibility to provide an overall view of the analysis done and let the users get the visualization the way they need/want.

Another valuable thing about using Tableau is that you just need to create the dashboard once. Any type of data update is done automatically.

It is also possible to combine many different types of data sources on a single data connection.

How has it helped my organization?

When I started using Tableau, one report that provided customer perception feedback involved a lot of manual effort, and every single month the historical number changed. Using an automatic way to analyze and provide the results increased accuracy to about 98% and reduced 99% of the rework.

What needs improvement?

There is still room to improve visualization when more than two dimensions are synchronized. Sometimes when you need to use more than one measurement from 2 different data sources, you won't be able to show the values.

Also it would be nice if it was possible to have more than one type of maks used on a single sheet, e.g. use trafic light together with text.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for about five years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

I did not really encounter any deployment, stability or scalability issues. There is a whole support team inside the company to solve these type of issues.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

How is customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

I did not really encounter any deployment, stability or scalability issues. There is a whole support team inside the company to solve these type of issues.

Technical Support:

Every time I needed support directly from Tableu, their response took less than four hours to contact me back with an initial solution to my problem.

How was the initial setup?

I get the first draft of our dashboards already done. Because it is a really friendly user tool, it didn't take too long for me to start developing my dashboards. Of course, after a while, I developed my skills and it became even easier.

What was our ROI?

I can say that it took about six months for Tableau to payback the investment done just by the fact that it reduced 99% of the rework for a single report.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you are a student Tableau provides a 1 year license for desktop version. You can also publish your work on Tableau Public.

What other advice do I have?

I strongly recommend using the trial version of Tableau before buy it. If you are not the type of person that is familiar with programming scripts, this is the perfect tool. It is really simple to create the first views, even though it will take a while to understand how some of the details work. Watching the tutorial videos helps too.

Its visuals make more of an impact than numbers alone. It requires shifting how you communicate data, making it difficult to share via traditional methods.

What is most valuable?

The ability to have a question and be able to quickly find the answer without having to reconfigure the data like you would have to using Excel. It also makes it much easier to visualize data in different ways quickly.

How has it helped my organization?

Seeing visuals of data makes more of an impact than the numbers alone, as most people are more affected by visuals rather than just numbers. We’ve been able to spur change by using visuals to back up points that we wanted to make more effectively than by just using the numbers alone.

What needs improvement?

Share-ability. If your audience isn’t using Tableau, getting them to see and use the insights can be challenging. Tableau’s approach to communicating information around data is great, but it requires a shift in how you communicate it and they purposefully don’t make it easy to share via traditional methods (e.g. PPT).

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for ~2 years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Not really applicable to me, but it still is in the process of scaling to the entire company (3,000-plus employees).

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is average. It’s a lot of self-service forums that require you searching through the relevant postings on issues. It’s pretty comprehensive and as long as you are comfortable with a Stack Overflow-like approach to Q&A, it’s fine.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used QlikView. I’m not 100% sure what drove this selection over QlikView.

How was the initial setup?

N/A for the technical setup. It does require a learning curve as you need to adjust from the way you’ve interacted with data previously, to how it’s set up in Tableau.

What other advice do I have?

As with any software implementation, it's going to require learning, adoption and acceptance, so you want to temper your expectations of immediate success and reinforce the use of Tableau throughout your company.

One of its greatest strengths is that it can very quickly perform various analyses, tests and rules out different scenarios.

Valuable Features

One of its greatest strengths is that it can very quickly perform various analyses, tests and rules out different scenarios, in seconds. It works perfectly integrating different data sources and applying immediate updates.

Ease of use: It requires a brief introduction and then you can use your imagination to perform all the analyses you want.

Other valuable features are: the ability to graphically represent different ideas, integration with different data sources and the ability to perform the deployment throughout the organization. To perform analysis is important but being able to share empowers the organization.

Improvements to My Organization

Tableau has allowed automated analysis and delivery. We have managed to automate reports that previously took up to 10 days to produce. Now, we can deliver these reports in a day (including updating databases).

Room for Improvement

They can improve the integration of SAP BW (join between elements) and Tableau Server platform, better adaptation for tablets and cellphone by the application and organize displays more efficiently.

Use of Solution

We have used Tableau for almost a year and a half.

Deployment Issues

The connection between Tableau Server and SAP BW can sometimes be unstable and lose the connection, at which point it does not display the query or the hub to which it was connected.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Tableau technical support is one of the best I've had. 9!

Initial Setup

Installation is really quick and easy; you just download the version directly from the official website of Tableau. The server configuration was a bit more complex but we had the support of the local provider.

Implementation Team

You should always analyze the variables; each organization is unique. However, for implementation, we ran the methodology suggested by Tableau Drive, which is based on others’ experiences.

It has allowed us to replace reports. The impacted report areas have been empowered by the tool, and are more aware of the data they report.

Other Solutions Considered

We evaluated Qlik Sense, SAP Lumira and Tableau. We decided on Tableau over Qlik and Lumira for ease of use by the functional teams, and because they have a direct supplier in Venezuela, including support and training. At the time of evaluation in May 2015, SAP Lumira’s analysis development capabilities and its integration with different data sources were not as good as Tableau’s. Even when connecting SAP Lumira with SAP BW, we could not publish analyses.

Other Advice

It is important to consider change management, definition of roles and performance analysts.
Tableau is a powerful tool for performing analyses and communicating them. We managed to empower the organization with Tableau and we are in the process of extending it to all the analytical community of our company.
We can integrate with SAP BW and perform analysis of information. However, we have found it difficult to join elements of BW such as cubes or queries, but this promises to be resolved in the new version, Tableau 10.
We are really pleased to have chosen Tableau as our ETL tool to support our analysis and sharing it within the organization.

The way it incorporates user-level data with geographic mapping really helps in building strategy at the top-most level. For huge data sets, it takes a lot of time to load the data.

What is most valuable?

  • The ability to connect to different sources of data like SQL, Excel, etc. makes Tableau a very smart tool for data visualization.
  • The way it incorporates user-level data with geographic mapping really helps in building strategy at the top-most level.
  • Sharing dashboards among the team is extremely hassle free and also the data being up to date makes management extremely happy.

How has it helped my organization?

All-important, high-level metrics are at the fingertips of top management, which makes decision making less painful and more data oriented.

All employees have access to real-time data, which makes customer management a nuanced affair, because of which there is stark reduction in errors.

What needs improvement?

  • Better dashboard creation
  • Ease of making reports

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for two years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Once the reports are created, there are no issues at all. The only problem is the speed of loading data. For huge data sets, it takes a lot of time to load data. With Google' Data Studio coming out, they might want to improve this aspect of the tool.

How are customer service and technical support?

Service is excellent and their support staff are very quick to answer any queries.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not evaluate any other solutions. We only worked with Tableau, as it was industry ready.

How was the initial setup?

It is a pretty straightforward setup, as described on their website. If you follow those instructions correctly, there wouldn't be any problem.

What about the implementation team?

  • We did it in-house, as it helped us streamline things and rolling out required dashboards faster and more accurately.
  • A team of two with basic tech background is more than enough to start off with.
  • The learning curve is very flat, so within a month, resources can be ready to roll out reports.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Their price is as per industry standard and any company in analytics business will be comfortable with the pricing plans.
