It can open multiple data sources. It is easy to create visualizations.

What is most valuable?

  • Being able to open multiple data sources
  • Ease of creating visualizations

It did not improve the way my organization functions. We have implemented a different solution to meet our need.

What needs improvement?

I’d like to see a more easily embedded version because that’s our need.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

I have not encountered any deployment, stability or scalability issues.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is excellent.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup with version 3.5 was very difficult, partly because we were embedding the Spotfire Web Player API and using custom authentication.

What about the implementation team?

Implementation was done in-house.

What was our ROI?

We don’t charge for the Spotfire reports individually. It is difficult to calculate ROI, but the product is considered to be expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We originally chose this product as a tool for our SaaS offering, but its embedding features and level of complexity for a multi-tenant situation were prohibitive.

What other advice do I have?

It is great for enterprise use.

Allows you to customize the application and use html in text areas.

Spotfire is a very intuitive design tool. It’s very easy to manipulate X-axes and Y-axes to build visualizations. The tool does not have a heavy learning curve. It’s also well-designed in that once you learn one thing, it’s quite easy to use that knowledge to do something else. The UI is quite consistent.

The tool allows you to customize the application. For example, the SDK allows for custom visualizations. But for that one should have the programming knowledge, C# is must to learn.

The best feature which I found is use of html language in text areas. You can design the text area with background colors and images as well you can add borders in text areas.

Spotfire supports the S plus and R language which we can used for predictive analysis. It’s a complex part of Spotfire.

It allows you to make your custom sql queries and load the required data only. Information designer is the best part in Spotfire, you can create columns, use conditions, pivot, unpivot, and make joins. It’s a kind of sql editor.

Marking visualization components and filtering for drill-down into the underlying data are very intuitive and easy to understand.

Version 6.0 has some added features like maporama in their maps, later on in coming releases they are going to add more to maps.

You can limit your data by using simple expressions.

These are the points which makes Spotfire different from other BI tools.

It offers easy development, easy-to-provide user training, and allows power users to do ad-hoc analysis. Dashboards look stale and boring.

Valuable Features:

Map charts are very powerful and work better than most other in-memory analytical tools.

It offers easy development, easy-to-provide user training, and it even allows power users to do ad-hoc analysis.

Improvements to My Organization:

I have used Spotfire at several client locations to develop solutions to help their organization make better and more informed business decisions.

Room for Improvement:

My biggest gripe with Spotfire is the lack of customization. Dashboards look stale and boring. No floating objects, floating text, etc. and the way panes resize based on resolution is annoying. Most complaints I have are related to the look and feel of a finished dashboard.

Use of Solution:

I have used this solution on and off for several years.

Deployment Issues:

I have not encountered any issues with deployment, stability or scalability.

Other Solutions Considered:

I use the product which my client is using. I personally would choose another tool over Spotfire if it was my choice.

Other Advice:

Take other tools into consideration as well. There are a lot of analytical tools and different ones have different strengths.

Spotfire is better than some competitors, but limited in many aspects.
