Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Instant recovery is the most valuable feature of Arcserve UDP.""The most valuable features are the replication to the cloud and the deduplication.""Arcserve UDP has a good configuration and user interface. It makes the job of an administrator easy.""Arcserve has a feature called virtual standby (VSB), which has been very helpful because I already have a hot standby copy of my critical infrastructure. If something breaks, I can spin up that virtual standby copy in less than five minutes and ensure that my data is available to everyone and that business continuity is maintained.""We are satisfied with Arcserve UDP. The most important feature that we use and why we choose this product is the RHA feature.""It's simple to set up.""Our customers are happy with the product’s functionality.""Global deduplication is the best feature of this solution."

"It has greatly improved our DR activity.""The reporting feature has been particularly beneficial to upper management... When you do manual backups, you do not get the benefit of seeing successes and failures and how often you have to do restores. With SnapCenter, you get all of that.""The way that it interconnects with VMware is really handy, because you can go right into your vSphere client, where you spend a lot of the day anyway, right-click on one of the VMs where you have backups running for however long, and you can restore either some files or restore the entire thing.""The backup process finishes very quickly.""The Exchange plugin is the most valuable because we have a lot of customers that use SnapManager Exchange and have to migrate to SnapCenter.""Restoring and cloning are easy to do.""The main advantage is its fast backup and restore.""It's integrated with VMware vCenter. You can also see the backups there and you can do a restore completely out of vCenter."

Cons
"StorageCraft ShadowProtect can improve by making one console that can control backups of all desktops and servers in one place. Additionally, the recovery process of the backups is very slow and could improve. It's very slow when we went to recover a complete disc but to recover one file is very fast.""In the most recent version of premium plus the replication has been removed, and it should re-added to the solution.""It should be easier to switch between backup locations. We have multiple data storage locations and sometimes one of those storages need to be replaced. It would be nice if they made it easier to reconfigure the backup configuration.""We have to use a Microsoft hypervisor for installation which is expensive.""The only problem with the solution is that when I change the drive capacity, it has to do a full backup. It's a problem when I have five servers to backup. When I only want to change the size of the drive, I have to do a full backup that can take one week.""We cannot restore each user's mailbox. Each user's mailbox should be independently restorable. Also, this solution is very slow. If you select all of the servers, it runs for a long time... It needs to be faster. Finally, If anything happens to one server we should be able to switch to another server.""They could work on their marketing approach. I don't see many people leveraging it.""Based on my experience, whenever we need support, there are difficulties with communication when trying to resolve the issue."

"What I did witness lately are issues with some Microsoft KBs, the updates. But it happened only once, and not on a major platform, it was on a small one.""We have hundreds of servers and systems and hundreds of customers and they're separated in a multi-tenancy way in NetApp SVM. Right now, the problem is that it always scan all SVMs. If I backup Customer A, it scans all SVMs, or tries to scan all SVMs, if there is a backup relationship on the storage. But it doesn't have the permissions, so we run into timeouts or the backup just takes too long. They're fixing that in the upcoming release...""We would like to see more granular repording and reporting in bigger sets available in SnapCenter.""The DBAs are comparing it to SMO but it doesn't have a lot of the functionalities that SMO has.""There is one area that needs improvement and that's in the alerting. When you set up your SMTP alerts, it only has - and I don't understand why - the ability to send an anonymous SMTP. It doesn't do basic authentication, which frustrated me for a while until I figured out that I'm not missing something. It's just not there.""The Dashboard view needs to be more compressed with better ease of access and drill-down features. They should also reinstate Linux filesystem backups of storage volumes (which existed in the prior version).""Plugins should be developed in shorter times. Performance generally could be a little bit faster.""Groups might be helpful for each site or data center so that we know a given data center has these resources while another data center has those resources. It's not always easy to group hosts by type."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I do not work with the pricing or licensing issues of the solution for our organization."
  • "We only have the maintenance of three standard UDP licenses. Each license is 50 Euro. There are some additional costs for the storage and software but it has nothing to do with the UDP."
  • "Normally our customers purchase the premium plus license, rather than the standard one, which provides more options."
  • "The price of this product is high and it should be lower."
  • "It is approximately $400 to purchase a virtual service outright."
  • "There is an annual license required for this solution and it is priced well."
  • "Pricing is most likely comparable."
  • "The retail fee is $1300 for a year for one server. Other than that, there is just the cost of your hardware."

  • "It's free. The license is included with other NetApp products."
  • "We see a financial value with SnapCenter because we don't have to license Commvault, which is pretty expensive."
  • "We have a site license, so it comes with the product."
  • "The license for SnapCenter was included with the storage array."
  • "It comes free with the amount of equipment we purchase from NetApp. In terms of pricing, zero is my favorite number."
  • "Pricing is very good because if you already have NepApp controllers, then it's included."
  • "The licensing is well-designed because it's already included in some packages with NetApp storage. Therefore, for most customers, it's okay as the SnapCenter license is already included in some NetApp bundles."
  • "The product is inexpensive."
