We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Consolidated our network environment at all locations, but mainly at our datacenter.""It is quite easy to handle.""We are very happy with the general bandwidth agility we have seen from one website to another website.""We use the FortiGate Sandbox to detect zero-day vulnerabilities, such as anomalies or malware, that are unknown and have not yet been discovered.""What I like the most is the configuration and that it's simple, and straightforward to maintain.""FortiGate has a strong security topic which allows all of the Fortinet devices to communicate and share information which makes their security more powerful.""Their proxy-based inspection is responsive and secure.""The customization potential is quite impressive."

More Fortinet FortiGate Pros →

"All the rules are secure and we haven't had a significant malware attack in the five years that we've been using ASA Firewall. It has been a tremendous improvement for our network. However, I can't quantify the benefits in monetary terms.""Stability, high availability of services, and very high MTBU were the most valuable features for me.""What I like about Cisco is the security zone. By default when you configure it, it gives you a security zone, which other firewalls don't have.""Ease of configuration: It has gotten a lot easier to configure compared to the original Cisco Pix.""I like all of the features.""It makes it very easy to have delineated roles and responsibilities between network engineering and network security.""Cisco ASA is very strong.""If you compare the ASA and the FirePOWER, the best feature with FirePOWER is easy to use GUI. It has most of the same functionality in the Next-Generation FirePOWER, such as IPS, IPS policies, security intelligence, and integration and identification of all the devices or hardware you have in your network. Additionally, this solution is user-friendly."

"Very reliable solution with good scalability and straightforward implementation.""The most valuable features of the Hillstone E-Series are its hardware capacity, innovation, and the throughput that the hardware can take.""Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.""The most valuable feature of the Hillstone E-Series is its user-friendliness.""This solution has two main features that we find very valuable; a threat-intelligence option, and a web/application filtering option. The technical support team are very good and very quick.""I am impressed with the application filtering feature.""The initial setup was straightforward. It only took a few hours to deploy.""Working with the Hillstone E-Series has, from a remote perspective, allowed me to give my clients a secure connectivity."

More Hillstone E-Series Pros →

Cons
"The support structure needs to be improved because every time we contact them, there is a delay in the response.""I haven't had a single issue since using Fortinet.""Maybe they could make some features more accessible, such as a way to translate directions between two networks that share the same subnets.""Lacks sufficient security options.""There is one big configuration file with no separations for the unique VDOMs. Maybe they could separate individual VDOM configuration files with the root VDOM configuration file referencing the individual VDOM config files.""They should improve high CPU and memory usage that occurs.""I would prefer to have more detailed logs within the FortiGate products themselves rather than relying on a separate tool.""NGN, reporting and controls."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"Make the IPS baked-in.""Recently, we have been having an issue with the ASA firewall. We haven't found the root cause yet and are still working on it. We failed over the firewall from active to passive and suddenly that resolved the issue. We are now working to find the root cause.""The configuration in Firepower Management Center is very slow. Deployment takes two to three minutes. You spend a lot of time on modifications. Whereas, in FortiGate, you press a button, and it takes one second.""I would like it if there was a centralized way to manage policies, then sticking with the network functions on the actual devices. That is probably the thing that frustrates me the most. I want a way that you can manage multiple policies at several different locations, all at one site. You then don't have to worry about the connectivity piece, in case you are troubleshooting because connectivity is down.""Comparing Cisco solution to others, it is expensive, it would be better for it to be cheaper.""In the past though, colleagues have had issues during the upgrade process. The failover didn't work and production was down.""One of the problems that we have had is the solution requires Java to work. This has caused some problems with the application visibility and control. When the Java works, it is good, but Java wasn't a good choice. I don't like the Java implementation. It can be difficult to work with sometimes.""The stability could be better because we have a lot of issues with the stability of Cisco Firepower."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Cons →

"I am not sure if this solution offers active directory integration. Adding that feature will definitely be an advantage.""SSL VPN license cost is not cheap.""The tool provides just a general report. It does not provide a granular report. Hence, the tool should work on its reporting feature.""The current usage reporting is very basic.""The tool needs to improve its price.""Having frequent live webinars on a monthly basis would really help.""Support from Hillstone E-Series has a shortcoming that needs improvement.""The solution doesn't have a web proxy built into the system like Sophos. This is something they should work to change."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."
  • More Fortinet FortiGate Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Always plan ahead for three years. In other words, do not buy a firewall on what your needs are today, but try to predict where you will be three years from now in terms of bandwidth, security requirements, and changes in organizational design."
  • "I have to admit that the price is high. But I think it's worth it if the stability of your solution counts for you."
  • "It has a great performance-to-price value, compared to competitive solutions."
  • "Spec the right hardware model and choose the right license for your needs."
  • "Everything with Cisco is expensive. My advice is that there are a lot better options out in the market now."
  • "To discuss with Cisco Systems or their partners to gain the optimal price and to not consider, without verifying, the false information that Cisco ASA is very expensive."
  • "Cisco devices are for sure costly and budget could be an important constrain on selecting them as our security solution."
  • "Price point is too high for features and throughput available."
  • More Cisco Secure Firewall Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The licensing model is very complex with many subcategories of licenses you can purchase. They could make it more simplified for customers to understand."
  • "The cost per year for licensing, and hardware, is approximately $850 for the basic plan."
  • "The tool's pricing is reasonable. It depends on the model. The product's pricing is around 600 USD. You need to buy a software license to activate the features. You need to pay around 150 USD for that."
  • "Hillstone's pricing is economical and neither very high nor very low."

Cisco ASA vs. Palo Alto: Management Goodies You often have comparisons of both firewalls concerning security components. Of course, a firewall must block attacks, scan for viruses, build VPNs, etc. However, in this post I am discussing the advantages and disadvantages from both vendors concerning the management options: How to add and rename objects. How to update a device. How to find log entries. Etc. Cisco ASA Fast Management Suite: The ASDM GUI is really fast. You do not have to wait for the next window if you click on a certain button. It simply appears directly. On the Palo, each entry to add, e.g., an application inside a security rule, takes a few seconds. Better “Preview CLI Commands”: I am always checking the CLI commands before I send them to the firewall. On the Cisco ASA, they are quite easy to understand. I know, Palo Alto also offers the “Preview Changes”, but it takes a bit more time to recognize all XML paths. Better CLI Commands at all: For Cisco admins it is very easy to parse a “show run” and to paste some commands into another device. This is not that easy on a Palo Alto firewall. First, you must change the config-output format, and second, you cannot simply paste many lines into another device, since the ordering of these lines is NOT correct by default. That is, it simply doesn’t work. ACL Hit Count: I like the hit counts per access list entry in the GUI. It quickly reveals which entries are used very often and which ones are never used.
