We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We can manage the entire system across the network and troubleshoot the pain points.""The single dashboard is a valuable feature."

"We like the alerting system, the SNMP monitoring and the customization of the bandwidth.""From a network point of view, we can see the state of the network, as well as bandwidth usage and downtime.""The email notifications are helpful, and the dashboards are user-friendly for people with little network monitoring knowledge.""The authentication links into our standard Active Directory authentication, which is very good.""The tool is integrated with our email for the alerts.""The remote probe feature in PRTG Network Monitor helps you monitor remote systems or your network at a lower cost than other solutions.""The real-time monitoring feature in PRTG is invaluable to me""The network visualization helps us to drill down deeper."

"I can save the traffic and analysis when I want to. Also, it's especially helpful to follow the stream (TCP, UDP, etc.).""It's easy to troubleshoot issues because there's a large online community.""Wireshark helps us to understand network traffic.""Wireshark's best feature is that it's adaptive, which means it's the go-to tool for network-related developers.""I like the filtering feature as we can filter data easily. This feature is also available in tcpdump, but it's a simple piece of software. Wireshark is more advanced and has many features. It allows you to filter a lot of things. The output can be filtered easily. The most important feature is colorization. If I say, "Okay, this particular SMB protocol in red, it will show me red." It's easy to identify that protocol or capture data.""Packet-capture files can be hard to use due to their size. Wireshark has a tool called tshark that can parse the files with out opening them so that you can take large captures, say 2-10GB, and return only relevant information.""I use the filters very often, to determine what type of traffic I am looking for. The use of filter allows traffic to be segmented so that a value can be looked at individually apart from the other traffic.""Wireshark has a lot of features. It's a powerful tool if you're familiar with it. You can see everything on the network with it."

Cons
"The technical support needs improvement.""The Wi-Fi side needs improvement."

More Juniper Mist Premium Analytics Cons →

"The operations dashboard is only available in PRTG's enterprise version, but I wish it could be accessed in the standard licensing. It would also be nice if PRTG had templates for dashboard monitoring, software monitoring, etc. It can help me set up a dashboard because now we don't have a template from PRTG, so we need to create one from scratch.""More training videos for installing and configuring this software would have been nice, especially when working with a lot of devices.""There is room for improvement in this solution for the performance and third-party monitoring protocols. They need to be updated to the latest ones.""The clustering aspect needs improvement, as there is a bit of confusion about you do when hit that 5000 probe mark.""Having a Unix implementation or Unix installation could be an improvement. Right now, it's based just on Windows, and that's a problem for some customers.""It probably has this already, but if it had a mobile app that would be helpful. For example, on a day like today when I'm out, if I could just fire it up and see green, green, green, green, green or red, that would be good.""PRTG Network Monitor needs to show bandwidth utilization in proper graphs. It isn't easy to learn.""PRTG Network Monitor can improve by adding prevention and detection features."

More PRTG Network Monitor Cons →

"A room for improvement in Wireshark is its ease of use for beginners. It could be better. Another room for improvement in the tool is for it to provide more details about the traffic load. At the moment, Wireshark is adequate for me, so there isn't anything I'd like added to it in its next version.""Wireshark could be improved by adding more monitoring features.""It is difficult to scale this solution.""I wish the filters were a little bit more prepopulated.""DNS could be improved.""Wireshark could make the filtering rules easier to apply and offer a drag-and-drop option as opposed to type and text.""The system could be improved upon by adding a better and more powerful data processing engine.""This product needs to improve the UI."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
