We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Setup is very easy. It's also possible to change source code and compile if you want to change something in the code, because it's free.""Wireshark's best features are that it lets us see what traffic is in the network and what data should be encrypted.""I have found the most valuable feature you can design your sniffer the way you want to.""Packet-capture files can be hard to use due to their size. Wireshark has a tool called tshark that can parse the files with out opening them so that you can take large captures, say 2-10GB, and return only relevant information.""If you're dealing with troubleshooting network, voice issues, or network operations, having a tool like Wireshark to dive into packet details is important. The initial setup is straightforward. Anyone starting out or looking to deploy it on your personal PC or machine can do it easily.""The solution is easy to install and use.""The initial setup is simple.""Wireshark helps us to understand network traffic."

"Zabbix is good for discovery.""It not only provides the preconfigured item monitoring feature, but it is also easy to configure custom items.""We value the auto-host discovery, template import, bulk import/export features. Newer versions also add nice features, such as multi-IP per host.""The most valuable features of Zabbix are flexibility and a single interface for different types of monitoring.""Setup was straightforward. Initial deployment took two or three months.""The features I found most valuable are the user interface and a wide range of network devices that are easy to configure.""The pricing of the product is reasonable.""It has an intuitive UI with beautiful graphs and customizable maps."

Cons
"The initial setup depends upon the basics. You need to have a clear understanding of the basics.""Wireshark could be improved by adding more monitoring features.""Wireshark is restricted when any sort of encryption is involved, such as XSL encryption or DLX.""The solution’s user interface could be improved.""The product has been using the same GUI for many years.""DNS could be improved.""I wish the filters were a little bit more prepopulated.""It is difficult to scale this solution."

More Wireshark Cons →

"There are a lot of areas for improvement, specifically in the dashboards and reports functionalities.""The documentation gets a bit messy between versions and is not too detailed, which is a bit painful for first-timers, especially when they run into issues.""Documentation terminology could be improved.""The stability could be better.""We would like to see the addition of automatic push functionality to this product. This would save time when monitoring our servers and networks as, at present, we have to manually install the Zabbix agent on any hardware to be monitored.""It could be more stable.""The user web interface is a little bit too basic, we need to link Zabbix to Grafana to have more options, such as graphs and charts. The interface needs to be improved. Additionally, there could be better integration with Grafana API.""The main problem with Zabbix is that you have to spend time writing templates for all of the products that you have."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
