Great performance with excellent low latency and fine dashboards
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup is very straightforward. It's not overly complex."
  • "They could work to make scalability easier."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for customers, for their hosted virtualized infrastructure storage.

How has it helped my organization?

HPE Primera had helped us achieve very low latency performance, hence enhancing the customer experience of higher IOPS demanding applications.

What is most valuable?

We really like the HPE infosight. it is an AI driven interface for hybrid cloud. it gives some more insights into any virtualized infrastructure such as performance issues, proactive recommendations etc. for example, get alerts and items of that nature It's been quite helpful so far.

The performance of the solution is excellent. It performs far better than you would expect.

The initial setup is very straightforward. It's not overly complex.

It outperforms on latency. It's very fast. We're talking about 0.4 milliseconds. The faster, the fast data works, the faster you'll get the response. This is really low latency; it's a great performance.

The dashboards are very good.  It has a very user-friendly kind of dashboard that is easy to understand. There isn't any complex stuff or too much information. That said, it has deep integration in to HPE Infosight. It gives you so much information, even more than you want.

The customization capabilities are excellent.

What needs improvement?

We haven't come across any issues with the solution. I don't recall missing any features.

They could work to make scalability easier.

It's quite expensive to upgrade right now maybe just now as its a new model.

Their latency is good, however, if they can continue to push their capabilities, that would be ideal.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've only been using the solution for just over one month. It hasn't been an extremely long amount of time just yet.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability and performance are excellent. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's quite reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We haven't attempted to scale the solution just yet. It's still very early on in the process, as we have just had the solution for about a month or so. Therefore, I can't speak very well about its scalability. However, it's my understanding that scaling it not that hard.

Primera supports all flash additional enclosures, where you can expand SSD

How are customer service and support?

Good support from HPE and local suppliers as well.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is quite straightforward. It's not complex. We had already done the sizing and we had already done the planning. The HP engineers were well aware of our needs. In the end, we just plugged in and gave them access, and they themselves did the configuration as per the initial requirements.

What about the implementation team?

HP engineers did all of the heavy lifting on the implementation. We simply provided them with our exact requirements.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are under a perpetual license in terms of software.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Evaluated Huawei OcenStore Dorado storage and DELL Unify 380. As per the sizing and cost, HPE Primera A630 was better and most cost-effective.

What other advice do I have?

We are using the latest version of the solution at this point. the model number is HPE Primera A630

I'd recommend the solution to other organizations. It's fast and the performance is very good.

I'd rate the solution at a ten out of ten.

Good compression and performance, easy to expand, and the support is good
Pros and Cons
  • "Our customers have given very positive feedback about InfoSign, which is the management software for this solution."
  • "This solution would be expensive for small business and it could be priced more competitively for that market."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider and all-flash storage is one of the products that we sell to our customers. Primera is one of the ones that we recommend for data centers.

What is most valuable?

Our customers have given very positive feedback about InfoSign, which is the management software for this solution.

Primera has good performance and the compression is also good.

It integrates well with other software including Docker and Kubernetes.

It is easy to expand.

What needs improvement?

This solution would be expensive for small business and it could be priced more competitively for that market.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been working with Primera for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution and none of our customers have reported a problem with it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scaling the capacity is easy with Primera. This is for medium-sized businesses, as the larger businesses usually choose Nimble, and in smaller businesses, they use cloud-based solutions to save on operating expenses.

How are customer service and technical support?

The support from HPE for this solution is really good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I work with a variety of vendors for all-flash storage solutions including Nimble, Primera, NetApp, Pure Storage Evergreen, E8 storage, and Huawei. A lot of the products from different vendors have the same features. This suitability of one vendor over another depends on their budget, as well as their plans for growing the business in the future.

Pure Storage Evergreen has the number-one compression and deduplication capability.

When a customer wants good performance for their database, we suggest Primera, Pure Storage, and perhaps Huawei. At this time, we also discuss other features with the customer so that they understand them.

NetApp is another vendor that is a popular choice in our market for medium and large businesses. Similarly, our customers have had good experience with Dell Storage. When it comes to Big Data and a lot of capacity, Dell is the solution that we recommend. Huawei has good solutions and they are more competitively priced than others, and the performance is not bad.

How was the initial setup?

I have not set up this solution personally but with the feedback that I have heard from the engineers, I know that it is very easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of this solution is good for medium-sized and large businesses.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, Primera is a good product and if it is suitable for the requirements then it is one that I recommend.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

High performance, excellent scalability, and responsive technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The performance of the solution is good."

What is our primary use case?

One of our customers is using a Telco system and they are using Primera for storage. There are customers who ask for cloud infrastructure which they are providing.

    What is most valuable?

The performance of the solution is good.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for approximately one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable and the performance is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    HPE Primera is highly scalable.

We have one customer for this solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

HPE Primera's technical support has been responsive.

    How was the initial setup?

HPE does the installation for us and it took approximately two hours.

    What about the implementation team?

We used HPE to do the full implementation of the solution.

We have two engineers for the maintenance of the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is only a one-time license purchase needed and no additional costs.

If HP could reduce the training cost, then that would be advantageous to the seller.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution to others. It is a tier zero solution with high performance.

I rate HPE Primera a nine out of ten.

Storage guranteed uptime is 100% and Data avilability is 100%. Other brands give a guranteed uptime of 99.999%
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most important thing that we had found when we purchased this product around six months back was its 100% availability and uptime."
    • "One of the drawbacks of the model we purchased is that it is not running NVMe drives. Even though they say that it is NVMe-ready, it is still on the SSD drives. The model that we purchased has only eight hard drives, and only the ones on the top could work on NVMe. The rest of them are still on the SSD. Its competitors, such as EMC and Pure Storage, are moving or have already moved to NVMe. HPE should improve this solution for NVMe. HPE should also improve IOs in this solution. IOs in HPE are weaker than Hitachi and Pure Storage."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for databases and application VMs. We are using the latest version of this solution.

    What is most valuable?

The most important thing that we had found when we purchased this product around six months back was its 100% availability and uptime.

    What needs improvement?

HPE should also improve IOs in this solution. IOs in HPE are weaker than Hitachi and Pure Storage.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for almost six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    It is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable, but we haven't scaled it. We purchased it with the required capacity, and it will suffice for our needs for the next couple of years. We have 2,000 plus users who access this Primera storage through applications.

How are customer service and technical support?

We haven't contacted their technical support. We didn't have any issues since we purchased it.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Hitachi G200 and HPE 3PAR for two or three years. Both these models are a minimum of six or seven years old. The main difference is that HPE Primera is on SSD. IOs in HPE are weaker than Hitachi and Pure Storage.

    How was the initial setup?

It wasn't simple, but it also wasn't so complex.

    What about the implementation team?

It was implemented by HPE. Even though we have got the Proactive Care warranty, it currently doesn't require any maintenance. We have just two admins.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is basically in the mid-range of the price. It is not cheaper than Hitachi, but it is cheaper than Pure Storage. There are no additional costs. Everything was taken care of in the price.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution, but it depends on the use cases for which you want to use the storage device.

I would rate HPE Primera an eight out of ten.

Artificial intelligence is good for technical work required to move from manual interactive to automatic
    Pros and Cons
    • "The features that I have found most valuable are the artificial intelligence for the storage inside of the software and firmware because customers do not like functionalities which require manual interruption."
    • "There really isn't any aspect of the solution that needs improvement for the customer other than its price."

What is our primary use case?

The Primary use case for HPE Primera is moving and storing high performance databases and core infrastructure, virtual machines, SQL databases, et cetera...

This is an on-premises solution because right now it is not popular among customers to use hybrid or cloud solutions in the Georgian Republic. Today, it is not common to move compute and storage sources onto the cloud. I don't know what happens in other regions like Europe, but in the Georgia Republic it is not popular.

    What is most valuable?

The features that I have found most valuable are the artificial intelligence for the storage inside of the software and firmware because customers do not like functionalities that require manual interruption. This feature is very good for the technical work required to move from manual interactive to automatic, because when solutions provide suggestions, improvements, or notifications, and you can click them automatically, this is a good solution.

    What needs improvement?

There really isn't any aspect of the solution that needs improvement for the customer other than its price.

It is a very good solution, but the Georgia Republic is a very small country and customers in both the government public sector and in the private sector do not have money to purchase enterprise or high performance solutions. They are looking at mid-range or mid-class solutions.

I can say that they need to simplify the solution. In SimpliVity, they need a lot of integration with virtualization technologies. For example, putting some add-ons or plugins in vCenter. vCenter is a management software of VMware virtualization.

Secondly, it would be better if they cold simplify the deployment of Primera. Thirdly, if you have already purchased Primera and you need to scale your infrastructure and you are thinking of buying more hardware disks, you will need to purchase the Rebalance Service from HP Enterprise. They need to improve that methodology.

The customers need solutions that do not require a lot of administrative tasks.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been selling HPE Primera for approximately one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In terms of stability, it works without any issue. Primera is a new generation of HP Enterprise 3PAR version, whereas 10 years ago it was HANA. 3PAR generation works very, very well without any issues, without any problems.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Regarding HPE Primera's scalability, if we are talking about the high-end versions, we can scale it up without any issue. It depends on the scalability of the customer.

How are customer service and technical support?

First of all, it depends which support model the customer purchases. If they are buying a foundation care with its low level of support, then you need to create a case manually and you need to write and contact customer service. If you are buying the Proactive Care Service, the guys from the customer service and support are very, very good. With Proactive Care Service, they contact you when you need to upgrade your firmware, etc... At all time HP Enterprise support works very, very well with Dell.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial installation, setup, and deployment were simple for Primera, versus other hyper-converged infrastructure.

HP Enterprise, simply with your Dell Technologies VxRail and HCI solutions, has done its job very well job, because you can deploy and start up your services and your new infrastructure in one or two days. One day for checking the specs and one day for deploying the whole infrastructure. This is because the solution is inside of the solution. Meaning the virtualization is already pre-installed, and they have already done the job.

Each customer is looking for high-end solutions. They may decide to purchase the Primera solution partly because of its installation and deployment. If it takes two days as is the case for HCI and three days in the case of Primera, there is no problem for the customer. It depends on the customer and their mindset.

    What about the implementation team?

We sell the products and we are doing the installation, deployment, integrations, and all the servicing.

We are also responsible for the maintenance of the product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

With HPE Primera there is no additional cost, but it depends what configuration we are talking about. If we are excluding support, it is very expensive. There is no showstopper for prices, just support or service. We are a Platinum Partner of HP Enterprise so we give quotes and configure HP Enterprise solutions. I don't know what happens in the US market, but in Georgia it is very expensive.

It is expensive if compared with Dell Technology.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

In the Georgian Republic there was an opportunity to sell Primera, but there was a battle between Dell Technologies and HPE Primera. Dell Technologies Unity Series won because of their low prices. Although their were no problems regarding their technical requirements,  Dell won it with prices. This is because Primera is very expensive, but it's a very good solution for customers.

In terms of HP Primera versus, for example, Dell Technologies' Unity, the advantage of Primera is that inside their operating system, inside its firmware, they have already deployed a network storage cluster functionality and application functionality. In Dell Technologies, if we are talking about their Unity solutions, they only have a replication functionality and you must buy additional hardware. Only then can you deploy the storage cluster configuration. So this is an advantage for Primera.

What other advice do I have?

The Primera product line has small and mid-size versions for mid-range customers, and they also have a high-end version. It depends on the customer.

In the Georgia Republic customers do have very critical data, and they must store that very critical information in a storage solution that has high availability. By availability, I mean that the hardware works very well and there are no issues with the software or the hardware. That is the reason why we are selling Primera.

    Overall, Primera gives high performance.

On a scale of one to ten, I would rate HPE Primera a 10.
