What is our primary use case?

I use Workspace ONE for my work with Homeland Security, but we're getting rid of it. VMware is the current mobile user platform for Homeland Security, specifically weapons of mass destruction. I've been consulting with them for the last four years, and I moved over to weapons of mass destruction four months ago. 

They're switching from VMware to Intune, and I was concerned with the due diligence. They've made a decision. and I'm helping them make that transition so that they can properly integrate the state and local devices for detecting chemical, biological, and nuclear attacks.

I just know some people at VMware at the senior level, and I talk to them when necessary. Homeland Security wasn't using the product how they should and they didn't reach out to VMware to identify the holes in the processes or inadequacies of the application that could've been addressed. 

The people in the weapons of mass destruction division didn't have the technical competencies to understand the software solutions, so they brought in a consulting company called Mobile Mentor, which is an Intune reseller. I told them that wasn't a reason to switch. 

What needs improvement?

VMware Workspace ONE is like any other product. You need to work with the vendor's software engineers to get the features you need to support your infrastructure. They can provide the technical modifications to the software you need to support your environment. 

For example, the Department of Defense has a peculiar IT infrastructure in terms of how they use SonicWall for mobile devices. If someone's using an Apple iPhone or an Android device, how do you partition it to support the mission? Public sector workers need to use a government cell because of the sensitive business they conduct on those devices. Mobile devices also include laptops and cell phones, creating more complexity. 

The bigger vendors like VMware, Insight, and MobileIron can assign engineers to customers. You can work with them to develop the right competency to use the product.

I rate VMware Workspace ONE eight out of 10.

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case was to containerize data and allow us to deploy applications securely. That was the use case that was predicated on and funded as a security initiative.

How has it helped my organization?

We had no MDM in place before, and we had one after the fact. When we had a departing employee, we were able to close off their access immediately.

What is most valuable?

Basically, the data containerization and the ability to publish and consistently push apps is the most valuable aspect of the product.

It has good stability.

The product can scale. 

There was nothing that the product couldn't do except force upgrades of iOS on iPhones.

What needs improvement?

The management interface needs to be better.

We'd like more useful support.

The scripting language is all very unique to the product as opposed to using any kind of industry-standard methods. That might be frustrating for some teams. 

The initial setup can be complex.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've worked with the solution for three years. 

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution seems to be stable. 

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This product scales well. 

At the high water mark, we had 3,200 users. We're down to about 2,100 now.

We do not have plans to expand the solution for a few reasons. Number one is cost. Number two is the management interface is poor. Number three is the absence of support from the vendor. Number four would be how hard it is to support Gene Pool. Finding people with expertise with the product are few and far between.

How are customer service and support?

Support is absolutely horrible. 

If I was not escalating through the account team that I've got, I would have practically no support on it whatsoever. In terms of quality, it's an absolute one out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

Initially, the setup itself is quite complex. We had bought what VMware called a starter kit, which came with some professional services to get us up and running with the product. I'd rate it a four out of five in terms of ease of deployment as we did have those professional services to help us.

Unfortunately, the implementation, I would have to call a fail. We had several existing devices, and installing the product properly involved wiping the phone and installing and then restoring the user's information. And we had a very large resistance to that approach from our client community. We ended up installing more of a BYOD model, which limited the value of the platform to our organization.

What about the implementation team?

We had the help of VMware professional services. 

While they were helpful, we were not prepared for the amount of change it would be inflicting on our user base, and as a result, it was not as successful as we would've liked.

What was our ROI?

The ROI was predicated on a more secure environment. That was achieved.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's a subscription from VMware. We have a hybrid setup with a physical gateway on site, however, beyond that, it's subscription-based.

We are paying about $145,000 a year on a three-year subscription with no ability to scale up or scale down within that class model.

I was not here when the initial purchase was made, so I don't have that comparative analysis from three years ago. It does not strike me as particularly expensive, however, given that Intune is now included with my E3 subscription, it's on the expensive side now.

Typically, the solution comes as part of a package deal. 

What other advice do I have?

We are end-users. 

I'd warn future users not to underestimate the impact on an existing environment.

I'd rate the solution three out of ten. It's hard to use in the absence of support. It does what it needs to do. However, I don't like it.

VMware Workspace ONE is a stable solution. Sometimes, we have to wait for the latest updates. You don't have to wait in the case of Apple devices because Apple releases changes in their update, and based on that, the leading solutions also make the changes in the beta version.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

VMware Workspace ONE is a scalable solution, and we can add multiple devices to it.

Currently, 1,500 users are managing the devices in our company. It's not extensively used because we are partners who sell these solutions to our customers.

How are customer service and support?

We have heard from our customers that their experience with the solution's technical support was pretty good. Also, we have our in-house support center, where we take customer calls and resolve their issues periodically.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's initial setup is not complex. Anyone with a little basic knowledge can do the configuration.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the solution through an in-house team.

The deployment process is pretty simple. You should have the devices, back-end connections, ports, and Identity Manager. The devices should be in one single portal managed by Apple Business Manager. You can do the enrollment. If the Apple Business Manager is unavailable, you can do the user-initiated enrollment, which can be done by the user's end.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In some cases, a customer may feel the solution is expensive.

What other advice do I have?

VMware Workspace ONE is deployed on the cloud, but the on-premises version is also available based on the customer's industry requirements. Users who want to manage their devices should look at the solution based on their future prospects, not the current scenario.

Overall, I rate VMware Workspace ONE an eight out of ten.

What is our primary use case?

I have used VMware Workspace ONE to manage and support the applications and operating systems (including Windows) used by staff in environments with all different kinds of requirements.

What is most valuable?

The feature with the highest rating for me is its employee management. I can also praise how versatile it is in terms of operating systems. It has good support for multiple operating systems and can easily manage them all. Not just that, but it can also support any kind of tool that can be run on all these operating systems.

What needs improvement?

From an identity perspective, there is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to integration with other solutions. I would say it needs more capabilities in terms of direct integrations, including cloud identity solution integrations.

Other areas of improvement are the synchronization functionality, as well as group management. I believe these areas could do with some polish. But beyond that, I wouldn't say anything else needs to be revamped.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using VMware Workspace ONE for almost three years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable product, but regarding their capability in terms of pushing out patches and all that, they do seem to hit a ceiling sometimes. They need to increase their capability a little more in this area.

For example, it lags sometimes when sharing content, pushing updates, and so on. These areas have been a bit inconsistent when we had the initial setup and it's improved slightly since then, but it's not quite there yet.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have found that it's always been scalable enough for our purposes.

How are customer service and technical support?

The customer service is very good. They have supported everything from their out-of-the-box solution and even more than that. They extended their support to other regions when we started using them. And for some of the areas that they already serve, they came out on-site to help support us.

How was the initial setup?

It's pretty straightforward. For the initial setup, it took around four days because we had requirements that prevented us from using it immediately as an out-of-the-box solution. That is, our setup had to adhere to certain scenarios which took some time to configure properly. To deploy the entire customized solution, I'd say it took around two to three weeks in total.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented a customized solution that was based around specific scenarios and we were able to get their support team out on-site to help us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you have a host of custom requirements (including licensing), make sure to set aside enough time for the initial setup because it can take up to a few weeks depending on how complex your environment is. 

What other advice do I have?

I can surely recommend VMware Workspace ONE to others.

Currently, I am using Proxmox. Proxmox is more available for simple tasks on PCs and Laptops.

Currently, the firmware is not working on the hardware. I do simple projects. Integrating the solution with other enterprise systems has moderately improved our operational efficiency. I will recommend the product to others. It is quite good. I like the tool. Overall, I rate the solution a five out of ten.

The solution is good for controlling mobile devices centrally. When you have a distributed network, it's able to easily manage and centralize.

What is most valuable?

It's provided us with a lot of benefits. We can control the app and wipe any data remotely in case of loss or theft. 

We can also apply patches to ensure the latest versions are available.

The solution allows us to control everything centrally. 

It's meeting our requirements right now. It's aligned with our internet policy as well as our security policy. 

It's stable and reliable. 

The solution can scale. 

The setup is pretty straightforward. 

What needs improvement?

Sometimes, we have challenges with remote patching and remote version upgrades. We'd like the product to improve these capabilities to make patch management especially a bit more straightforward. 

We do not need any extra features. 

Technical support could be better.

What is our primary use case?

We use VMware Workspace ONE for desktop virtualization.

What is most valuable?

When compared to competitors, VMware Workspace ONE is quite good.

As we are driving this business for the credit bureau, all of the benefits and features are available, as well as a few regulatory terms from the RBA. We have to abide by the rules and the regulatory terms. The MDM solution satisfies all of the requirements.

The performance is good, and it is easy to configure.

The user interface is very friendly.

What needs improvement?

Our central authentication mechanism is not integrated with this solution, which we deployed three years ago. So far, our goal is to integrate it with our two directory servers, but we've run into a few challenges. We are not able to connect with support to help us resolve this integration issue.

I would like to see improvements made to both the support, and the pricing.

Technical support is an area that needs improvement.

I'm having difficulties with VMware support, with AirWatch, Workspace ONE. We would like to integrate it with our central authentication system, but there are some issues. We have been trying to connect with the technical support team to help us resolve this issue.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are using AirWatch, which is an MDM solution, and we are also using SaltStack, for automation. 

VMware recently acquired SaltStack. According to my knowledge, the merger with SaltStack occurred this year.

How was the initial setup?

After you've deployed the solution for your company, there are only a few things left to accomplish, such as adding or configuring new users. If someone leaves the organization, you have to remove them, which does not require further administrative effort.

I believe it takes around 10 to 15 minutes to configure a new user.

A technical team of only two to three people is sufficient, especially considering they have 24/7 assistance.

What about the implementation team?

The installation can easily be done yourself, it's easy. 

Anyone can follow the instructions or watch the video and do it themselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's a costly solution.

While it is not inexpensive in terms of price, it is definitely worth it. In terms of pricing and the functionality we get with the MDM, I believe it is more than adequate.

We have a three-year subscription.

What other advice do I have?

With the many solutions available such as IBM MaaS360 and Microsoft Intune, you have to consider the business requirements, the software you will be using, and the strength of the security it provides.

This solution is very secure, and I would definitely recommend it to others.

I would rate VMware Workspace ONE a nine out of ten because the support is lacking.
