Executive Summary
Updated on Mar 29, 2022

We performed a comparison between Blue Prism and UiPath based on our users’ reviews in five categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.

  • Ease of Deployment: Users of Blue Prism and UiPath express mixed opinions on the ease of deployment of the two solutions. Some users found deployment to be simple. However, there are a few reviewers that say it has a medium level of difficulty and can be complex, especially as the number of applications increases.
  • Features: Valuable features of both Blue Prism and UiPath include ease of use, scalability, and debugging. Valuable features of Blue Prism include stability, flexibility, reliability, the fact that it is robust, systematic and technically sound, good mapping and analysis, security, that it can engage with external systems and websites, helpful RPA processes, good background processing, Design Studio, modelers, supports the multi-bot architecture, good at OCR, error handling, object sharing, batch processing, zero coding knowledge needed, the reporting, exception handling, embedded control room, credential manager and logs, and API integrations. Reviewers say the control room can be laggy and not so user-friendly, the front end is not great for screen scraping, and it does not have an AI Fabric or process mining tools. Other users mention that the user interface could be improved, the assisted automation functionality needs to be better, It is not very easy or intuitive for developers to program the bots to make intelligent decisions, and that Blue Prism needs to provide better training since there is a steep learning curve involved.

Valuable features of UiPath include their robotic enterprise framework, an extensive library of activities, IntelliSense, intuitiveness, automation Cloud Platform, great usability of Studio, Orchestrator, an AI fabric and a documented understanding model, ease of building automation, great APIs, database communication, scraping, and PDF functions. Users of UiPath see room for improvement with the backwards compatibility and with the new features that come with UiPath upgrades that don't work perfectly in the initial days. Other UiPath reviewers say having features for process discovery would improve the end-to-end development capabilities, navigating through the network components can be very inconvenient, and sometimes when the Orchestrator gets upgraded and UiPath doesn’t, errors regarding the managed packages occur.
  • Pricing: Blue Prism is more expensive than UiPath. Even with the cost being cheaper, reviewers of UiPath still say UiPath pricing should be more affordable and flexible.
  • Service and Support: Users of both Blue Prism and UiPath express that the technical support is good.
  • ROI: Users of both solutions experienced an ROI. Blue Prism users mention seeing an ROI as it relates to quality, compliance, error-avoidance, opportunity cost, and time-savings, while users of UiPath say there is a definite ROI seen in day-to-day operational costs.

Comparison Results: Both solutions are solid. However, UiPath seems to have slightly better ratings because it has more features (such as an extensive library of activities and a better front-end that Blue Prism lacks). UiPath also stands out because it is geared toward developers, whereas BluePrism is geared more toward business people. In addition, UiPath has a free community version, and provides sufficient training as needed.

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It's quite easy to use and easy to understand the process studio.""We found the unassisted bots very useful because they can program a variety of different processes. This is a valuable feature of Blue Prism, especially when compared to other tools on the market.""Blue Prism currently supports SQL Servers and structured data.""The new features that have come out have been great.""The most valuable features are the exception handling and embedded control room.""The ease of development is the most valuable. Standard VBOs are pretty useful there with Excel and different things. Our custom developments for SAP and things like that are pretty easy to set up and quick to get going.""If there is a task that Blue Prism cannot do out of the box, Blue Prism provides me the facility of designing one and integrating it into the application. This process is called Visual Basic Objects.""Blue Prism takes good security measures and is user friendly."

More Blue Prism Pros →

"For beginners, UiPath is a very low-code or no-code experience. They can get started with StudioX.""UiPath saves costs for our customers’ organizations. That would just be the cost savings from RPA bots. I haven't really dug into the cost savings of the ancillary products, however. I know that one of my clients is using the test suite now after I had built a proof of concept for it, and they've fully implemented it. I'm sure there's going to be a lot of cost savings there as well.""If I need something, I go to my account managers, who are nice people. They respond back quickly and get back with a lot good options, which I like.""There are a number of activities available in the UiPath Studio, which are enough to automate all types of tasks.""Most valuable is the document understanding feature of this current project, which is better than ABBYY FlexiCapture or Automation Anywhere.""You don't need to know coding, as it's pretty straightforward. The graphical user interface is easy to use. It is drag and drop. You do need to understand the basics of what's happening, what you're doing, and how the technical things work. However, after a short bit of training, you can start doing stuff, and the more you learn, the better you become.""UiPath has helped with data scraping and plugging into websites and combining that with Alteryx. We can attack 90% of our use cases now.""UiPath continues to add services to the Portal. It is fairly important that they are all managed from the same place because it is a single point of access, which was a factor that really played into our choice of vendor, UiPath. We use Automation Hub to sort of collect ideas and discover what ideas are good for information, then we use Orchestrator to manage them once they have been developed."

More UiPath Pros →

Cons
"Blue Prism develops its own tools and process automation, but the documentation is unclear and incomplete.""Blue Prism can improve on the ease of use of its graphic user interface(GUI).""Its pricing is sometimes higher. Its price can be better. Its presale support should be increased. Currently, its presale support is very less. System integrators generally position Blue Prism in front of customers. Though they have an ecosystem, they don't have people who can train for the partner ecosystem. They have to increase the presales consultants for partners. In addition, their L1 and L2 support can also be improved.""Blue Prism could be more scalable.""It isn't very easy or intuitive for our developers to program the bot to make intelligent decisions. A bot, for the lack of a better word, is stupid, and it can only do what we program it to do. It cannot make intelligent decisions. For example, if we are reviewing Uber charges, they could be posting their transactions under different corporation names, even though they are under the same parent company or group. A human can easily understand that it is the name of the same company, and it just has an asterisk or space, but a bot cannot do that. When a bot cannot complete the transaction, it sends out an exception rate, business exception, or system exception for a human to do a manual review. The exception rate has been high because the bots cannot make decisions that we think are very simple, which is understandable because that's how they were programmed. There is potential in utilizing the higher intelligence side of the tool, but it is not easy to code higher intelligent actions. It is a very lengthy process to get the provisioning to ensure that it is kind of doing what it needs to do. Provisioning involves multiple things, and it is quite complicated and not the best experience, but it is not just because of Blue Prism. Blue Prism is easy, but it takes a long time to onboard into our in-house system.""Blue Prism is not very flexible when it comes to integrations.""They improve more in OCR, to read text more correctly, currently can say OCR in blue prism only works for less cases and is only effective 50%. so mostly OCR's of Blue prism is very less used and other API's or tools are integrated with Blue prism for OCR techniques.""There are some new tools on the market that work better than Blue Prism. When Blue Prism receives information I have found other RPA solutions refresh the application better. At this moment it's not the best application."

More Blue Prism Cons →

"We're actually looking into a document to understand the use case. It's essentially car titles, and we're struggling. We've used several different OCR engines to try to train the model and try to improve it. For us, a little more direction on how to actually achieve this would be useful. We've been struggling for a couple of months now trying to get it working and getting it to the level we need it.""Some kind of code repository would be good. Other than that, everything is fine in UiPath. They improve it every quarter and bring something new.""I would like a way to add priority to the outgoing mails from UiPath studio.""UiPath could do some optimization of how you search through your process flows.""Capturing ROI needs improvement. I would also like for it to have more logging mechanisms in Orchestrator.""There are some functionality limitations on UiPath that we could have access to on different platforms.""There's room for enhancement, particularly in the support department and in the area of reporting, to provide a more robust product for gathering insights.""More industry-specific training and information would be highly valuable to us."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Blue Prism is pretty steep compared to the others, much more than Automation Anywhere."
  • "We really don't bear the costs. The cost is borne by the customer. It runs into about $100,000 per year per customer for Blue Prism. We normally budget around $30,000 for the first year for the hardware, setup, and people cost."
  • "Other than your infrastructure, in terms of servers that you have to set up, I don't think that there are any costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
  • "Compared to other tools on the market, it is one of the most expensive."
  • "The pricing is really good for an enterprise-level solution. It's quite scalable and it's quite comparable with the market."
  • "Our licensing fees are approximately $5,000 USD per year."
  • "The licensing fees are low compared to other tools."
  • "Blue Prism is less expensive than some of the other RPA solutions."
  • More Blue Prism Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "It costs much less and it does much more than the competitors' solutions."
  • "The pricing differs on the requirements. If there is a huge purchase, then we get a discount. There is not a fixed pricing of the product."
  • "If you want to do a demo trial, it is a 30 days free."
  • "The community edition is completely free. Then, people say, "There is nothing to lose, let me try it.""
  • "There are operational benefits in terms of time savings and user satisfaction of not having to do menial, repetitive tasks."
  • "Traditionally, Automation Anywhere and Blue Prism are the biggest things competing against UiPath. Those are usually what most of the clients lean towards, if they see a cheaper licensing option. Clients choose UiPath because it's easier to deploy and learn within their teams."
  • "We saw ROI in 15 days."
  • "They give it away in the community edition for free, so I use it at home."

For any RPA tool it required have a generic /universal governance model where

    1. sponsor or Head of RPA implementation

    2. Business analysts

    3.Architects(solution/technical)

4.Developers ( Full stack - Build, Test and SIT)

5.Scrum master or Sprints head or Project manager

    6. QA ( Test automation) - optional

Above generic governance model/structure roles for handling any kind of RPA process.

One proven way to implement centralized automation management is via a CoE. The best practices of Robotic Process Automation states that the use of bots doesn’t increase negative risks for the organization in the development of reusable solutions. The responsibilities of a Centre of Excellence will depend on the exact governance model used. The most common activities include the following:

    1. Drive RPA in the business, training teams, and increasing awareness of RPA in those.

    2. Calculate the criticality and quality of the developed solutions, ensuring the application of best practices.

    3. Monitor the operation of bots and guarantee that execution SLAs (service-level agreement) are met.

    4. Follow and report the main development stages.

    5. Guarantee the execution of established governance processes.

    6. Guarantee the continual improvement of processes and tools.

    Business Continuity Requirements:

To have backup or disaster recovery machines for the critical RPA processes with load balancing using central orchestration in different clusters.

For any of the RPA there is orchestration tool which handles all the initiation and processing from one location have it maintained well from risks and disasters with load balancing.

This will helps in business continuity.
