We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Easy admin functionality. You can quickly do all the admin functionality without reducing cycles.""It is the foundation for our monitoring solution.""Having all of our information within one tool set; our alerts, our monitors, and the things that our operations team needs to function.""It gives an alarm when there's something going on, not just when there's an expected spike that happens every night on a server.""It gives us visibility inside applications. It helps us to dig down and find the root cause of any issue within the network.""It is very scalable.""Great customized dashboards and drill down reports with auto serve analytics.""You can scale it pretty much however way you want to as long as you have the servers to throw at it."

"The most valuable feature is application monitoring.""Management Console - Managing service to each server enrolled in the Solarwinds is much easier. Using a web base console, you can control your service much convenient way. There is no need to login remotely. It save a lot of time and effort.""The initial setup was relatively easy, and we didn't have to install anything. All we had to do was put on the devices we wanted to monitor.""The solution is end-to-end from the network and the application to the processes. Everything about the enterprise infrastructure is being covered by the solution. It's easy to use and easy to navigate and one of the leaders among monitoring solutions.""The solution is great for monitoring. If something is going wrong, we can immediately find the root cause.""SolarWinds is a very stable platform compared to others on the market.""It's good at monitoring system-specific things like ports, services.""One of the most valuable features are the reports. They're pretty good. Also, the ease of installation and customization for the client is another feature that we value. SolarWinds has a lot of features but these are the ones I like the most. We also like that the KPIs have the ability to be preset."

Cons
"The dashboards need to be improved.""I'm very happy with DX Unified Infrastructure Management, but what could be improved is its user interface because currently, it has many wide spaces. All the information you need is in DX Unified Infrastructure Management, and it's a reliable tool, and though that's more important than the gaps in the user interface being smaller or wider, those gaps still need some improvement. I know the team is working on it. My company had some backend problems with DX Unified Infrastructure Management in the past that have now been solved. The setup for the tool also needs improvement because it's complex. Another room for improvement in DX Unified Infrastructure Management is its technical support because it's sometimes not as knowledgeable or responsive. What I'm suggesting to be added to the tool is an open-standard ELK Elastic-based database where you can put in all data, so that you can use the data in other systems as well.""It would be good to implement views showing the aggregated status graphically.""Stability.""A useful feature to have would be automatic configuration per standard by new robots that check in for any particular customer.""It is a little complex to use versus other softwares.""Reporting capability can be improved especially when it comes to availability.""It needs a little bit more functionality in the Admin Console."

"Some custom applications cannot be monitored, and a lot more applications need to be included.""I think they need to make reporting easier and more simple & dynamic.""SolarWinds Server and Application Monitor could improve the server monitoring and the web application monitoring features are not good. Microsoft SCOM has better server monitoring.""Support for the IBM Mainframe is needed.""The stability, flexibility, and ease of use could be improved.""The product needs to reduce its price.""I believe that some of the trends, environmental maps, and items like those found in Orion would be very beneficial.""An additional feature that would improve this solution is the ability to complete root cause analysis."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "This product is expensive compared to other vendors (SolarWinds, ManageEngine)."
  • "The product-price ratio is better than other brands such as Fortinet or SonicWall."
  • "The license cost depends on the number of probes and robots."
  • "Reasonable setup cost and licensing prices."
  • "CAD $400,000 annually."
  • "Customers pay for the license and the support."
  • "Pricing for DX Unified Infrastructure Management isn't cheap at all. It's a complex tool, so you have to pay more. No one is happy with a large bill to pay, but if it's a complex product and you designed a complex solution to be monitored, it'll be your fault that you need to buy an expensive product, and that would be implicit in the design of DX Unified Infrastructure Management. Monitoring is just a small part of it. Sometimes you have to pay a significant amount of money for a complex yet very good solution."

  • "I have always said SolarWinds is very “proud” of their products, meaning they are expensive. I cannot afford to purchase all the licenses I need for all the SolarWinds products."
  • "When planning for the number of licenses to purchase, make sure you understand all of the elements within an application required to really understand performance well. In our case, we quickly came to the conclusion that an unlimited license for SAM was the way to go."
  • "Nagios XI, WhatsUpGold, Uptime Software, PRTG, Manage Engine, and SpiceWorks are the other tools that have lower pricing and licensing costs. However, they can't compete with SolarWinds when it comes to the features and functionality that SolarWinds can provide."
  • "I would advise potential buyers to wait until the end of the quarter, end of year, or other time to place orders. There are actually great deals to be had at those times if your budget cycle can match up."
  • "Pricing and licensing is fair for what you get. It does have a great bang-for-the-buck appeal."
  • "SAM is not per server so the pricing model can be deceiving. If you have an enterprise environment, you will quickly exceed your licensing quickly. You should know this before going in."
  • "Understanding the counts of objects to monitor will determine the licensing need. In terms of pricing, it’s not cheap but it’s not expensive as larger vendors whose products don’t have all the features or integrations."
  • "The product might cost you $30,000 USD to buy, but scaling this solution requires the purchase of additional polling engines at $20,000 USD each."
