Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It allows to facilitate communication, allowing us to create channels for updates, file sharing, and photo sharing within our team profiles.""The product is easy to use.""Nowadays, we don't need to visit an HR portal. Our marketing and human resources teams directly share details about birthdays, upcoming events, and important dates in Slack. Whether it's a training event, a company-wide gathering, or a social event, all the information is shared there. This keeps us all updated.""The solution is scalable.""Slack makes it easy for employees to contact each other and exchange documents or information.""Slack helps us keep the conversation focused and avoid multiple threads that create more confusion. I would say that has been the biggest advantage for us.""Slack is a powerpack bundle of features that help small or large organizations to handle teams and their tasks.""With respect to being a clean and efficient communications platform, I think that it does the job quite well."

"Yammer is useful since it is a product you can easily integrate into our system since Microsoft supports it.""Yammer brings in the most relevant posts to the users.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the communication events.""The posting features are valuable.""We can send out notifications and ask questions using Yammer.""The most valuable feature of Yammer is its integration with all the services of Office 365.""I find it quite simple and intuitive. It's similar to using a more user-friendly interface for SharePoint. It integrates seamlessly with the browser, so you hardly notice you're using it.""Its most valuable features are the storyline and communities."

Cons
"Slack feels clustered and hence it should improve its design and UI.""Slack tends to crash once a month.""We’d like it to have more capability for everyone to work on one doc in real time all at once.""I would like to be able to do live streaming on Slack. Slack allows Slack huddle where you can do a group call, but it is not very well-designed. I'm not sure if it is going very well, but live streaming is one thing that I would definitely love to see. When you use Zoom, I like how you can run webinars. If we could do that through Slack, it would become an all-integrated platform. I would also like to be able to schedule meetings using Slack, similar to Zoom.""Sometimes there are login issues.""Slack should add a feature to schedule meetings.""The solution should have less frequent updates.""Sometimes, the servers are not available."

More Slack Cons →

"I would like to see a fancier user interface. That is one of the weak points of Yammer.""I faced some issues with Yammer's mobile app when I shifted from Android to iPhone, and it got a little bit tricky to use it on an iPhone, which took away some of my time.""Sometimes, we lose access to the solution for unknown reasons.""The way you want to control the communication could be an issue. It depends on what kind of company you are. We are a public company, and there are some regulations that we need to comply with. Its ease of use can be an issue for a company because anybody can subscribe and use it. There are many competitors that are overlapping. Since Microsoft bought Yammer, it tends to be in the shadow. It is not put in the front from the service perspective.""The solution must be able to stream by itself, without integration, the same way that you are able to do it on Facebook Live, Instagram, etc. Streaming must be embedded into it.""The solution's feature for sharing could be better.""It should have integration with multiple third-party platforms.""The permissions are a little bit over-complicated."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We use the free version that does not have a license."
  • "The solution is expensive."
  • "It is less expensive than one of its competitors."
  • "It is an expensive tool. We pay 15 to 20 USD monthly per user."
  • "Slack is definitely worth the money."
  • "The pricing can range up to about twenty bucks a user. You can spend a lot of money, especially if you're talking about thousands of users. Generally speaking, Slack is less expensive than Teams. Slack doesn't include all the bells and whistles that Teams does. So you can go from a $6 license in Microsoft 365 to a $50 license per user per month, and there's a lot more you can do in the $50 license."
  • "I would rate the tool's pricing a four out of ten."
  • "The solution is cheap in my country."
  • More Slack Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "I don't know about the pricing. Now that Microsoft has bought Yammer, it should be a part of our subscriptions for Office 365."
  • "The pricing is not bad."
  • "Its cost is included in the license bundle for Microsoft."
  • "Yammer is a pretty cheap solution, and it's included in multiple subscriptions."
  • "Compared to other products like Amazon, Yammer's pricing is fine."
  • "We get it as part of our Office 365 subscriptions, so I don't think we pay any additional cost for Yammer. It's included in the Office 365 subscriptions."
  • "I think that there is a need to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs of the solution."

There are several discussions on SharePoint’s social strategy going on at the moment. I had some great discussions with my MVP mate Adis during Summit last week. Since #SPC12 almost every SharePoint addicted developer, it-pro, power user has reviewed Yammer. If you don’t know what Yammer is, here a short introduction. Yammer is an enterprise social network, which allows you and your coworkers to communicate in a modern way as on Facebook. The huge difference between Facebook and Yammer is, Yammer is private. That means only people from your organization or the people you’ve invited to join your network can see and take part of the conversation which is going on in your Yammer network. With the common understanding of Yammer, you should be able to follow up the ongoing discussions. Adis wrote a great post, summarizing his thoughts on SharePoint and Yammer integration and the upcoming social future. I totally agree with Adis, there are a lot of things missing at the moment. But here my thoughts on Yammer vs. SPSocial Leak of integration In my eyes there is still too much missing, of course you can integrate yammer into your SharePoint, but key features are missing such as SSO, seamless look ‘n feel integration. Prebuild views on Yammer depending on the current SharePoint context or the mobile story. Microsoft shipped mobile Apps for SharePoint 2013 OnDemand and OnPrem. AFAIK are these apps currently available in preview, but each of them is based on SPSocial. SharePoint… Read more →
