A backup and recovery suite with a useful duplication feature, but it would be better if it had a cloud integration feature
Pros and Cons
  • "The deduplication feature is useful. Deduplication and compression features are what I like about NetBackup."
  • "It would be better if it had a cloud integration feature. I would like to use a single product for the cloud instances and the on-premise instances. The price could also be better."

What is our primary use case?

We use NetBackup primarily for backup and recovery. When you have some data, you need to back up that data. If there is any disruption or deletion or if there's a disaster, you can have your data back and restore it and use it.

What is most valuable?

The deduplication feature is useful. Deduplication and compression features are what I like about NetBackup.

What needs improvement?

It would be better if it had a cloud integration feature. I would like to use a single product for the cloud instances and the on-premise instances. The price could also be better.

I would like to have a backup option for end-user devices. That means end-user devices like mobile devices, VDI solutions, desktops, laptops, etc. In this COVID time, most of us work from home, and end-user device backup is really important today.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veritas NetBackup for almost 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No product is stable, but it hasn't been an issue. It's an old product and a mature product, and it hasn't been an issue. We have a customized offering created with the NetBackup and Pure Storage, and it's working well.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability depends on the customer profile. Each product has its own unique selling points, and some customers prefer to use other software like Commvault. We have most of the virtual environment in Veeam because our customers prefer it. But NetBackup is equally good.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is good. If we find an issue, we get in touch with their support immediately.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup isn't complex; I would say that it's moderately easy to implement this solution. We need to have some machines. It's a resource-centric server. If we're using it for enterprises, we need some dedicated physical servers to install this, like master and media servers. It's not very simple, but it's not very complex. I found it in-between.

What about the implementation team?

We provide full deployment services, managed services, support, and maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

NetBackup is expensive. They need to work on the pricing side. I find it comparatively on the higher side when I compare the terabyte backup costs.

What other advice do I have?

Veritas NetBackup is suitable for medium to large enterprises. Backup Exec, a lighter version of NetBackup, is better suited for small businesses which are Windows-based or Linux-based,

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Veritas NetBackup a seven.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Deduplication reduces the backup time. It provides backup of a single copy of data.
Pros and Cons
  • "Deduplication is the most valuable feature as it reduces the backup time and provides backup of a single copy of data"
  • "GUI needs to be more user-friendly."

How has it helped my organization?

It enabled Telecom Fiji Ltd to backup the Unix-based OS. Backup Exec 12.0 was only able to backup the Windows platform.

What is most valuable?

Deduplication is the most valuable feature as it reduces the backup time and provides backup of a single copy of data as opposed to multiple versions of the same file.

What needs improvement?

GUI needs to be more user-friendly.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product has been stable from day one. The only issue was on Telecom Fiji Ltd's side, i.e., when the tapes are not rotated per cycle and the data is not transferred to it for clearing the storage pool. This caused the pool to fill up and affect the backup jobs.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We did encounter some stability issues. We could not read the LT04 media on the LT05 drives. The majority of our old data was on LT04 and we could not transfer/read it. There should be interoperability on these drives.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is excellent.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we were using the Veritas Backup Exec 12.0. We changed to this solution because we needed a backup solution that could back-up the Unix-based OS.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was complex, considering that we have never worked on an Unix-based OS before.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The software and license are very expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at CommVault and Veeam.

What other advice do I have?

This product is very robust. Be prepared for the cost.

A stable solution for full and incremental backup of databases, but there are compatibility issues and the setup is complex
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is stable."
  • "We have an issue with the last version on the latest backup of the solution as it is not compatible with Sybase 16.5."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for the full and incremental backup of databases such as Sybase.

    What needs improvement?

We have an issue with the last version on the latest backup of the solution. It's not compatible with Sybase 16.5.

Two days ago the solution worked fine and we were able to use it for all our Unix and Sybase servers, as well as the back-end database. But, now there is a need for us to change the lag about a report in respect of the media on Facebook.

We primarily use Unix servers, not those of Windows.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veritas NetBackup for ten years, since 2010.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The solution is stable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

In the past we worked with Veeam and Avamar, at which point we made a determination of which solution would best serve our projects.

    How was the initial setup?

    The initial setup was complex.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

    The price is okay.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veritas NetBackup as a seven out of ten.

    Top 5
Supports multiple environments, easy to use, and stable
    Pros and Cons
    • "It is easy to use, and you can run it with all kinds of client software environments. It works well with the most popular software, file systems, and operating systems. It is very useful to us."
    • "We want a solution that can be scaled-out because our data is growing very quickly, and we aren't able to back it up quickly. It takes one or two days, which is a problem. It is very slow. We just use one backup server. We want another solution with maybe a backup server cluster to back up more data in one day. We want a solution that can be scaled-out to back up our data quickly and efficiently."

What is our primary use case?

We use Veritas to back up our database and our project's data, such as chart layouts, research and data files, to tape library or network-attached storage (NAS).

    What is most valuable?

It is easy to use, and you can run it with all kinds of client software environments. It works well with the most popular software, file systems, and operating systems. It is very useful to us.

    What needs improvement?

We want a solution that can be scaled-out because our data is growing very quickly, and we aren't able to back it up quickly. It takes one or two days, which is a problem. It is very slow. We just use one backup server. We want another solution with maybe a backup server cluster to back up more data in one day. We want a solution that can be scaled-out to back up our data quickly and efficiently.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for more than eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    It is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We just use it on one backup server. Our data is growing, and it is taking more time to back up our complete data. It is very slow. We want a solution that can be scaled-out to back up our data quickly and efficiently.

In terms of the number of users, we have 20 to 30 users of this solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is not convenient in China these days because of the virus. It may be because the engineers from the vendor are working from home, so we cannot get telephone support. We can only use email support, which is not efficient.

    How was the initial setup?

Its initial setup is not very complex. It took us one or two months to deploy it. We have a team of five IT people for deployment.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution. We are a system integrator, and we have a lot of users who have been using this solution for ten years. The only problem that we are facing now is of speed. We will continue to use it, but we are also looking for a better solution to back up more quickly. Speed is our main requirement. We might continue to use Veritas if they can provide a parallel solution, a cluster solution, or a cloud solution to back up our data more quickly. Otherwise, we will switch to another vendor.

I would rate Veritas NetBackup a nine out of ten.

Simplest on the market, scalable and stable
    Pros and Cons
    • "I have found it to be the simplest solution to the market. It gives us a complete end to end solution. We are using this solution, Veritas Appliance and another one for access archiving. It is convenient to have all the support from one vendor."
    • "Support for the solution needs improvement."

What is our primary use case?

We are using the solution as a storage unit.

    What is most valuable?

I have found it to be the simplest solution on the market. It gives us a complete end to end solution. We are using this solution, Veritas Appliance and another one for access archiving. It is convenient to have all the support from one vendor.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for more than ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In my experience it is scalable. We have five administrators involved in using the solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

Support for the solution needs improvement. When we contacted support with issues, we had to be passed on to the higher level of the support team, going from level one through to three. We only managed to get a solution for our issues once we spoke to the level three support team. The lower level support is not familiar with the complexity and did not have any answers. When we frequently dealt with the support they were not able to pass us on directly to level three. This was tiresome having to deal with the lower levels not being qualified for a solution until we managed to get to level three.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veritas NetBackup an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises

Gives us confidence in the recoverability of our data in the event of disaster
    Pros and Cons
    • "Veritas NetBackup Automatic Image Replication and CloudCatalyst features allow me to replicate deduped backup images from one site to a remote site, as well as duplicating deduped images to the Cloud (i.e. AWS S3, etc.)"
    • "This product would be improved with the inclusion of a Sandbox feature like Veeam Sandbox."

What is our primary use case?

We are protecting our company's critical data using NetBackup Virtual Appliance at multiple sites. For DR purposes, we use the NetBackup AIR feature to replicate deduped images between sites.

How has it helped my organization?

With our critical data protected by Veritas NetBackup, we feel confident knowing that we can reliably recover the data in case of incidental data loss or disaster.

    What is most valuable?

Veritas NetBackup Automatic Image Replication and CloudCatalyst features allow me to replicate deduped backup images from one site to a remote site, as well as duplicating deduped images to the Cloud (i.e. AWS S3, etc.)

    What needs improvement?

This product would be improved with the inclusion of a Sandbox feature like Veeam Sandbox.

You can take a full backup with incremental speed and integrate it with block tracking
    Pros and Cons
    • "I like NetBackup's accelerator feature. You can take a full backup with incremental speed and integrate it with block tracking."
    • "NetBackup's reporting features are a little poor."

What is our primary use case?

NetBackup is used for backup in an enterprise environment. If you have VMware, Windows or Linux, and complicated database machines, like Power or Eonix, then NetBackup is appropriate for this kind of environment.

    What is most valuable?

I like NetBackup's accelerator feature. You can take a full backup with incremental speed and integrate it with block tracking.

    What needs improvement?

NetBackup's reporting features are a little poor.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've used NetBackup for nearly six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    NetBackup is highly stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would give NetBackup a 10 out of 10 for scalability.

What other advice do I have?

I rate NetBackup nine out of 10. If you're implementing it, I wouldn't recommend installing the media server on a VMware environment. I would also suggest getting some limitations for a LAN-free backup.

Good platform compatibility and fast backup
    Pros and Cons
    • "Best feature is its three-tier backup."
    • "Main area that could be improved is the pricing, to make it more competitive"

What is our primary use case?

My primary use case of this solution is backup for the production server and then for the development. The platform is back up for Linux, Selaris, HP, Apex, IAAS, AIX, and then for the virtualization, VMware, backup to AWS, and the container route.

    What is most valuable?

Veritas NetBackup's best feature is its three-tier backup, which makes the process a lot faster. I have also found their duplication feature to be valuable, as it allows duplication in the client side, a media server side, or in OST storage. The product also has a lot of compatibility with platforms.

    What needs improvement?

I think the main area that could be improved is the pricing, to make it more competitive. In the next release, I would like to see the ability to back up Office 365 and Google Workspace.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for around ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    This is a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    The product is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

The remote support and their support center are good. The knowledge base provided on their website is also very helpful.

    How was the initial setup?

The product is easy to set up in small environments, but it would be more complex in larger ones.

What other advice do I have?

I think Veritas NetBackup is the perfect product for a backup system. I would rate this product as nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    Hybrid Cloud
