We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It works, and pretty much always has. Reliability and support for enterprise features, with a multi-tenant interface, makes CloudStack a very compelling solution.""It was easy to deploy, both for PoC and production (with HA).""Over the years, we have valued CloudStack for its stability.""Killer features for me were: support for many hypervisors, ability to match business logic, "everything in one box," available APIs.""CloudStack, by default, gives us a zone-based setup which makes it easier to manage datacenters located in different geographical areas.""CloudStack’s private gateway networking feature is what enables us to offer utmost security and confidentially to our customers and partners, by enabling them to connect to their virtual data centers via dedicated, encrypted, private fiber lines that never touch the public internet space. Ease of setup and management are certainly important additional benefits for us on the engineering team.""It has become easy to deploy new devices with no or minimal hardware changes. Now, a user can be ready to use a firewall within a few minutes, as compared to the traditional physical model which involved purchase, shipping, hardware configuration, cabling, power, etc.""Valuable features include that it is a user-friendly portal, VPN P2S and S2S possibilities, and it's easy to manage accounts and limits."

"Morpheus is an intuitive solution that is very easy to use.""The user interface of the application is exceptional.""The most valuable feature for me was cost optimization.""The multi-cloud integrations and the DevOps and operational integrations are the most valuable. Morpheus platform is a centralized set to manage different clouds and your on-premise platforms. It does a very good job of what it is designed to do. It is very good in terms of features. It is extremely stable and easy to install. It is also very scalable. Their support is also extremely good.""The most valuable feature of Morpheus is its strong integration with vSphere Cloud.""Provides a good automation platform.""It supports many features, and it also supports some of the automation that Cloudify supports. So, in addition to just giving you basic platform management—such as the ability to deploy virtual machines and have multitenancy to log in and perform all of your basic platform management tasks—it also supports automation. You can, for example, spin up three virtual machines, and you can have each virtual machine configure each other. You can do service chaining with it. You can run scripts in Dash and Python, or you can use tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef. All of this is just built into the tool. It is a very powerful tool.""The most beneficial features for us were the API integrations with various cloud vendors like Nutanix, VMware, AWS, Azure, and GCP. It saved us the effort of doing that work ourselves."

Cons
"The main reason why we started looking for another solution: backups, replication, HA, and dependency on secondary storage. CS is quite sensitive for infrastructure, and any kind of network disruption between CS and secondary storage leads to VM hanging.""The number of contributors to this solution is relatively small compared to other solutions. However, if more frequent users of CloudStack contribute to the open-source community, it will significantly enhance the overall community experience and make it more useful for everyone involved.""I would like to see support for native VLAN, and fault-tolerance.""VPN P2S is cutting all connections except the CloudStack environment for the user when he is connected. I would like to have VPN like Cisco's AnyConnect.""The product does not have an easily implementable payment gateway.""The area of Apache CloudStack that could stand the most improvement is the functionality/features around the virtual routers. They can be somewhat cumbersome to deal with at times and are the least stable piece of the product.""The user can't upload SSH keys from the UI. We have to use the API for this, and it is not always convenient.""The numerous, multi-layered drill-down menus make it difficult to find one simple knob to turn."

"I faced a few problems while deploying.""The tool could support virtual network functions better. It is really good at doing enterprise-type of things, but one of the things on which we're working with them is loading very complex virtual machines with it, such as Juniper SRX routers. It needs to support more complex virtualized resources a little bit better. Aside from that, it is a terrific tool. We really like it.""The product has become overly complex. The biggest problem is that we find a bug, they fix the bug, but then another one pops up. We can never really deliver on the vision we had using Morpheus.""We had to put in much effort ourselves since Morpheus's support wasn't always available to help us.""Morpheus is working hard on creating an integration framework due for release in Q2 2021 which will allow clients to create their own interfaces and integrations into any 3rd party product that has a full-function API. Morpheus is also heavily focussed on enhancing the container management side to compete head-to-head with Openshift and CloudForms in Q3 2021.""The service is limited and somewhat lacking.""The solution's pricing and customization need to improve.""There is room for enhancement in integrating Morpheus with other solutions."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The Apache CloudStack is open source, so you do not have licenses to purchase."
  • "Give an effort to planning. If possible, contract a specialized consultant company for the initial setup and knowledge transfer."
  • "As far as I know, CS is still free of charge. If you want to pay some money, Citrix Cloud Platform is based on CS, I think. As for hypervisors – everything as usual, you need to pay for VMware and vCenter. As for XenServer, recently they changed the free feature list, so you may need to pay some money to get useful features like XenMotion."
  • "There is no license, so the product is free unless you are buying professional technical support services."
  • "CloudStack is an open source solution, so you don't need to pay anything for it. When our company develops something specially for CloudStack, it is donated to the Apache Software Foundation and provided to anyone that wants to use it."
  • "The solution is open-source and free."
  • "It is a 100% open-source solution needing just an Apache license. Also, there are no hidden fees to be paid."
  • "CloudStack is an open-source product."

  • "Licensing is on an annual basis, and it is upfront for the year. There is no extra cost unless you want additional support or specific deployment packs."
  • "The license is based on the number of virtual machines that Morpheus is managing. So, it is a pay-as-you-grow model."
  • "Initially, the license may seem like a good deal, but as we grow, it becomes costly."
  • "The solution is cheaper if you have less number of servers, but it becomes very expensive for a large number of servers."
  • "Morpheus doesn't directly support cost optimization, but its API integration can facilitate resource optimization. It doesn't dynamically optimize resources like an aeronautic system would; it operates step by step."
