We performed a comparison between Dell PowerScale (Isilon) and NetApp StorageGRID based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two File and Object Storage solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."The recent introduction of inline deduplication and compression has drastically improved our efficiency ratios to make it an economical product. This solution has also had a positive impact on our employees' productivity because it reduces the amount of admin that our staff needs to handle."
"Dell PowerScale is a scalable solution. It allows non-disruptive upgrades and maintenance of the system."
"PowerScale allows us to manage storage without managing RAID groups or migrating volumes between controllers. It has really simplified things. We're not having to worry about the underlying infrastructure. That takes care of itself. We just worry about the data. It's really easy for deploying and managing storage at the petabyte scale."
"It's easy to manage. The web UI is very intuitive, and there's CLI also that you can use to manage it."
"I don't have to rebuild the cluster to add a node."
"Its most valuable feature is the DR capabilities replication."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is its performance."
"The fact that we were able to set it up, use it, and, for the most part, didn't have to worry about it after we had it set up has been valuable."
"It has awesome scalability. We consume it with storage appliance nodes, then we just plug and play as we need more."
"The most valuable feature is tiering."
"Duplication, interface and the manageability is good and simple."
"It has enabled us to save money on storage costs. We removed our tape library."
"It improves our operational efficiency."
"The ability to get to the StorageGRID from anywhere on my network. The solution is remote. You don't have to be at a physical location."
"StorageGRID is designed for cloud-based, highly scalable storage. Think big names like service providers like Google who need massive storage volumes with scalability. It also offers cloud-enabled storage capabilities with cloud management functionality. So, if you prioritize scalability and cloud integration, StorageGRID is the way to go. Its object-based storage is built specifically for that purpose."
"Cost-effective and easy to deploy."
"I'd like to see more Iceland products in the cloud so that we can port our data into different environments if needed. I would also like to see a virtual appliance or software-defined Iceland product."
"The product needs to improve CLI since commands are complex. The search option is also difficult since you must give the full path."
"Some improvements to the NFS support would be of interest to us."
"The biggest weakness is small file handling. Small file compression options are not enabled out of the box. It would be good to have this enabled by default."
"There is room for improvement with the updates. It can take a significant amount of time to do a major OS update. However, even though it takes multiple reboots, the cluster stays up. If we want to apply a newer version of the OS, we have to roll back some of the patches so that we can upgrade. It requires a few reboots just to do that. The cluster doesn't come down, everything is still running, but it's time-consuming, at times."
"We lost our technical sales reps about two years ago. We haven't gotten one assigned to us and we'd love to have one."
"The only thing that I think PowerScale could do better is improving the HTTP data access protocol. At the present, you cannot protect access to data via HTTP or HTTPS the same way that you can secure data access through other protocols like NFS or SMB[...]the Unified Permission Model that would allow a user to authenticate before being able to access a private file, does not apply."
"The cost of Dell PowerScale is currently high and there is room for improvement."
"One key improvement I'd like to see in StorageGRID is enhanced visibility for management purposes."
"Improvements need to be made in the support area."
"I just recommend improving the marketing campaigns in Pakistan."
"There was a small amount of confusion when working with StorageGRID and Active Directory for access. We had to do things three to four times resulting in our engineer troubleshooting a couple of things. The location of the menu, along with what is inside the menu: configurations, settings, etc., is not straightforward to users. Most users are Windows-based. So, when make logical changes to the menu which are not similar to Windows, users and administrators get confused."
"Beyond the initial setup, this product is a little bit difficult to configure."
"The redundancy and reliability are great, but I also see room for improvement there. I would like to see more efficiency in the storage and dedupe/compression solutions."
"It has its quirks here and there, but it is an older NetApp system."
"We want to move towards Azure in the cloud. Right now, the system is all physical."
