We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It allows you to use ANY consumer or enterprise HDDs and SSDs, and that's a really great thing!""The StarWind products have enabled our organization to modernize stations where larger and more expensive equipment was not an option.""It has been extremely stable for the three years we've been running it.""StarWind allows us to move virtual machines from one physical host to another, which greatly reduces the downtime required for maintenance.""The features that I found most valuable are ease of use of the software that StarWind offers - with the first setup being a bit painful.""The fact that we can expand our storage and add on to our compute nodes easily and how amazing the StarWind technical support team is really adding value to our purchase.""Integration with Microsoft clustering has been perfect, allowing us to leverage our investment in MS server licensing to the fullest.""The performance of the solution is accurate and concise."

"I found the solution to be very stable.""For us, fault tolerance is the most important feature of DataCore.""Our system is designed to be scalable and flexible, so it can grow and adapt to meet the changing needs of our clients.""Active-active is the most valuable aspect for us.""Storage is always available.""DataCore's ability to seamlessly move virtual volume data between storage pools as well as their synchronous mirroring has made maintenance and disaster recovery planning achievable.""Continuous data protection (CDP), can be used to "protect" again ransomware by recording all write on disk in a log. You can recover your data with incredible time granularity.""I am very happy with this product's ability to adapt, increase, and modify existing infrastructures."

"The performance and small footprint of this solution are its most valuable features. I am able to obtain and use more than 90 percent of the physical hardware capacity.""It supports the latest technology of NVMe SSD, which is PCIe-based SSD. It has a very good IOPS performance as compared to vSAN. For the same system, I get 1,000 IOPS with vSAN, and with Sunlight, I am able to get almost 10,000 IOPS. In terms of features, it has almost all the features, such as HA and centralized dashboards. It can be managed centrally, and the visibility of the system is very good. They also have very good technical support and customer or partner training."

Cons
"We have, in rare cases, received conflicting guidance between different support folks within StarWind.""Perhaps the developer should refine the product management through PowerShell.""I would definitely like to see quite a bit more on the monitoring side of things.""I would like to see options for automated notifications of any changes, including, for example, synchronization issues.""While it is possible to implement disk encryption in StarWind using Windows Bitlocker, such a solution can be a little tricky to manage.""Our company was hoping for deduplication and encryption across HCI. That is currently not supported.""StarWind Command Center's single-pane management solution only works with Hyper-V.""The cluster configuration is time-consuming and tedious."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"There is room for improvement in the graphical interface.""The cost is becoming prohibitive since they moved to a subscription model.""Unified storage (all block, objects, and files) should be in a single storage pool with unified storage concepts, hence providing the user with whatever they want.""When I sometimes reboot for maintenance, the connectivity from the iSCSI initiator host could be improved.""If it could integrate to a cloud gateway, then we could carry it directly to storage, instead of having middleware in between the storage and the cloud.""DataCore SANsymphony should integrate file servers at a good price into the solution.""Right now, the version used is run on Microsoft Windows Server. Having a Linux version or even an appliance would be better as it would eliminate the use of additional licensing for another piece of hardware.""Problem detection could be easier. It should help customers identify problems very quickly because it's not easy to analyze on the platform today."

More DataCore SANsymphony Cons →

"Its reporting and dashboards need to be improved. It currently has very basic reporting options. It should also be made easier to deploy on Unix operating systems. It is easy to deploy on Windows and Linux, but it is currently not easy to deploy on Unix.""My recommendation would be to add this technology to Azure, Microsoft Azure so that we can bring it to the market, or deploy it on public clouds such as Microsoft Azure and Google. It is currently only available on Amazon's public cloud."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "In my case, the licensing per terabytes is very high and it must be licensed for each extra functionality."
  • "The pricing and licensing are better with DataCore."
  • "The cost is at the same level as other storage solutions and it is easy to understand the licensing."
  • "Make sure you are made aware of the annual subscription cost when purchasing."
  • "Pricing has improved but it is still expensive."
  • "This product has a good ratio between quality and price. In many cases, it's less expensive to work with DataCore than other storage systems."
  • "This solution allows the use of off-the-shelf hardware and charges by the TB of storage."
  • "The solution is cost effective."
  • More DataCore SANsymphony Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "There is an operating cost for the VDIs, which is an additional cost. However, the licensing fee is half that of VMware or Nutanix."
