Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Installation is amazingly easy.""IBM XIV's most valuable features are NVME, especially when it comes to de-duplication, compression, and responsiveness.""The performance and robustness of the systems are very good.""As it spreads, a chuck of 1MB across the board means using all available spindles on the backend.""Very easy to produce reporting data (Snaps). Very easy and fast for provisioning devices and Remote mirroring.""Hands down, this is the easiest storage platform on the market to manage."

More IBM XIV Pros →

"The simplicity when it comes to building your own automation has been excellent.""The maintenance software is straightforward because you do not need to do any configuration.""To receive a performance enhancement by merely clicking the one button upgrade is the true value of the platform and what I look forward to the most.""Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure has a simple, user-friendly GUI, and I also like the remote recovery capabilities. It provides a single platform for managing databases.""What's best about Nutanix Acropolis AOS is its simplicity. It's simple to install and simple to understand. The technical support and support portal for this product are both very good and very helpful.""Hyper-convergence is the most valuable feature for me as it allows me to scale the hardware according to project requirements.""It is less expensive than VMware products. It is also a little bit more flexible, but it really comes down to price for us.""Data locality provides super-fast data access and ultra-low latency."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pros →

Cons
"I encountered stability (performance) issues during enclosure or disk rebuild. Also some power supply issues due to malfunctions of circuits. Sometimes "internal" Snap sessions hang and consume pool capacity.""This product was not a good fit for our organization as we have a ton of latency sensitive applications and XIV was not able to keep up with IO + latency demand.""The change form synchronous mirroring to asynchronous (and vice versa) without reconfiguration from scratch would be helpful.""Until the drive is replaced, the pool_resizing is locked.""I would rather have a web GUI served directly from the unit, and a CLI accessible directly through SSH.""IBM XIV's scalability is adequate for our requirements, but because it's modular, you can't scale to larger requirements."

More IBM XIV Cons →

"To have internal stability, we needed to network the solution ourselves. Performance depends on the application. Performance could be the lack of IOPS, memory and CPU and configuration issues.""We did have some integration issues.""I'm sure there are a lot of things that could be improved, but I'm actually very satisfied with this product. There may be some possibilities to move the virtual server dismounting points or to move the server from one group to another, but I can't think of any special improvements or update features.""Nutanix Acropolis AOS could improve by having an auto-update feature. At this time I have to update each system manually. However, I bought the standard license and I did not buy the maximum license they have available. There could be a certain license that does the updates automatically.""One thing to keep in mind is that only experts can use it. It has to be in the proper hands, instead of going to XYZ people just for some cost savings. So lift-and-shift and migrations might be tricky, because it is not like a VMware.""It would be ideal if it was more secure.""I think some of the tasks that must be done using CLI could be added to the web interface.""The One-Click Upgrade process could/should offer the ability to integrate with 3rd party drivers. For example, we use NVIDIA Grid graphics cards. It would be amazing if, during the One-Click Upgrade process, we could "slipstream" additional VIB drivers for ESXi into the upgrade process."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If you are going to use the product behind an SVC, IBM will price the units lower, since you are likely not to use any of the advanced copy services."
  • "No-license-required policy, unlike others where you need a license for everything. Just pay once and forget about licenses."
  • "Licensing is straightforward."
  • "We have a five-year total cost of ownership where we pay an initial amount and then annually for maintenance."
  • More IBM XIV Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
