Provides good firewall performance and networking operations but could be more stable
Pros and Cons
  • "The most useful feature is the performance of the firewalls and networking operations."
  • "The solution isn't cheap. It's market price."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is deployed on-premises.

What is most valuable?

The most useful feature is the performance of the firewalls and networking operations.

For now, we're using Huawei for small and medium enterprises. They're working excellently for now.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Huawei for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability as eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability as 10 out of 10.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is good. I would rate them as seven out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

I would rate the initial setup as seven out of ten.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution isn't cheap. It's market price.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We've also been working with Cisco.

We chose Huawei because of a customer requirement.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution as seven out of ten.

I would recommend the solution to any customer. The performance is good, and it can deliver requirements.

It's an excellent competitive solution that has equivalent and sometimes better features compared to vendors such as Cisco and Arista.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Quite stable with good security and holds its own against other products in terms of functionality
Pros and Cons
  • "The security is good. It's as effective as anything else on the market."
  • "The solution requires a more interactive dashboard. That would make it easier than playing with configurations the way we have to now."

What is most valuable?

We are still really just using the third party NIB and IDS for monitoring. As for the integrated platform, we haven't upgraded the new one.

We've just been playing Huawei initially. Only now are we doing the Huawei firewall call integration and we haven't actually completed that portion yet.

The security is good. It's as effective as anything else on the market.

What needs improvement?

The support could be improved. As we've gone along, we've realized the support is not effective due to the contracts we have. They need to offer more support upfront, no matter what contract you have.

The solution requires a more interactive dashboard. That would make it easier than playing with configurations the way we have to now.

It would be better if upgrading the solution was easier.

The solution needs four-way deployments and dashboard confirmation.

The product should be able to integrate with products like Ansible.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good. It doesn't crash or freeze, and I don't recall experiencing bugs or glitches. It's reliable. Most of our integrations have been okay.

How are customer service and technical support?

Without a proper contract in place, you can't really access the technical support you need. We haven't been satisfied with the level of service we've received.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm also experienced with pfSense, Barracuda, and more of Cisco enterprise firewalls, as well as ASA.

I believe that, although Huawei seems to hold its own against most other products, there are features of Cisco Firepower in particular that don't exist on Huawei's solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is okay, however, support comes as a separate contract, and, if it expires, it can cause issues like what we are facing right now, where you need support and you don't have a contract in place and therefore can't get the help you require.

It's costly, in terms of the support contract. We'd prefer a solution that allowed us toe update or upgrade incrementally and had the support there and ready to go.

In our case, as well, it's a whole setup and not just an appliance, which is maybe why the pricing is so high and why we are facing difficulties.

What other advice do I have?

I haven't worked too closely with the solution, so I don't understand its full capacity.

We have an entire Huawei architecture center. We do have equipment on the firewall side, run by Huawei, however, we haven't upgraded so far, we're just doing it to run parallel assistance with Cisco.

We just need support from Huawei but we have not paid for the support yet, and we're lacking in that space. For that reason, we're trying to run another Cisco solution.

Due to the fact we are a government organization, we need to only use an on-premise solution, although we are planning to integrate into the public cloud.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten. It's capabilities, at the end of the day, are quite good. However, we prefer Cisco, as it has a very good support system and users can upgrade incrementally more easily.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Easy to implement and provides good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's implementation is pretty easy."
  • "Huawei NGFW should have better reporting and a dashboard for the visibility of traffic."

What is most valuable?

The solution's implementation is pretty easy.

What needs improvement?

Huawei NGFW should have better reporting and a dashboard for the visibility of traffic. Right now, everyone is looking for dashboards and single-click reporting.

How are customer service and support?

I rate the solution’s technical support a seven or eight out of ten. I rate the technical support team's response time a seven out of ten. I rate the support team's product knowledge an eight or nine out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I also work with other products like Cisco, Fortinet, Barracuda, and Sophos.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the solution for a service provider and got support from Huawei for some difficulties we might have faced.

What other advice do I have?

Banks in Pakistan are actively migrating to Huawei NGFW. We are implementing end-to-end Huawei routing and switching for one of the biggest banks in Pakistan. I would not recommend Huawei NGFW for SMBs (small and medium-sized businesses). In Pakistan, customers look for local support, easy availability of technical resources, and certified resources in the local market.

Currently, we haven't found many certified resources from Huawei for small companies. All the implementation is done by Huawei partners or distributors. Only Huawei partners have certified resources in the local market. The product is new, and Huawei might release some certifications that can give a hands-on.

Overall, I rate the solution seven and a half to eight out of ten.

Can help during implementation, however, offers bad documentation and technical support is not helpful
Pros and Cons
  • "Huawei was able to assist us in the installation of their product. The installation was very fast."
  • "The documentation needs to be improved. When they retire old models, they also retire the documentation. However, if you are still using an older model, you still need access to that documentation. And yet, they go ahead and removed it. It's gone. You are therefore stuck with a device with no documentation and technical support that isn't very helpful as they also remove support assistance as well."

What is most valuable?

Huawei was able to assist us in the installation of their product. The installation was very fast.

What needs improvement?

The usage for the data center wasn't that good. It needs to be improved.

The support is not very good.

The documentation needs to be improved. When they retire old models, they also retire the documentation. However, if you are still using an older model, you still need access to that documentation. And yet, they go ahead and removed it. It's gone. You are therefore stuck with a device with no documentation and technical support that isn't very helpful as they also remove support assistance as well. They tend to use this method to force you into upgrading.

However, even in newer models, we've noticed the documentation isn't the best. It's very limited across the board.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using the product for about two and a half years at this point. We started using it somewhere between 2016 and 2018.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability isn't that great. On top of that, if you want to expand, you need to buy more of the product.

90% of the telecommunication equipment in our organization is Huawei, so it has been used quite extensively.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support needs to be much better. We couldn't get help when we needed it. We haven't been satisfied with their level of service.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used to use Cisco's ASA Firewall, however, we discontinued it seven years ago.

We've also stopped using Huawei and are now using Sophos.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was pretty straightforward and the deployment was relatively quick due to the fact that we had assistance from Huawei.

What about the implementation team?

We had direct assistance from Huawei.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing was a cause of concern for us. The price ended up being quite high. We weren't expecting it.

What other advice do I have?

We're just customers.

We're using the latest version of the solution.

We haven't been too satisfied with the solution and so we have decided to move from it to Sophos.

I wouldn't recommend the solution. We've had a lot of issues with licensing and support, among other concerns.

Overall, I'd rate the solution four out of ten.

A next generation firewall solution that's easy to implement, but technical support could be better
Pros and Cons
  • "I like that the initial setup is straighforward. It's also a scalable solution."
  • "With the Huawei firewall, none of the features comes at the top. We found out later that customer support is really not good. For this firewall, because of our customers' routine, for example, every six months they'll do a penetration test to find weaknesses. So whenever they came up with VAPT reports, they are looking to Huawei for help. I think that's basically because it's a different culture. Chinese culture and our culture is different. They have always tried to help find some excuses or say some other things that cannot help you solve the problem immediately."

What is our primary use case?

We use Huawei NGFW for our internal infrastructure. We also implement it for our customers. Our primary use case is for our internal protection. Then for end-users we we implement Huawei firewalls.

What is most valuable?

I like that the initial setup is straighforward. It's also a scalable solution.

What needs improvement?

With the Huawei firewall, none of the features comes at the top. They have always tried to help find some excuses or say some other things that cannot help you solve the problem immediately.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Huawei NGFW for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I think Huawei is still okay. Scalability is not an issue. Basically, you don't have very tight control like the Cisco firewall. Maybe a very tight control in the number of concurrent connections if you acquire a license for this. Huawei is quite not so tight. It's quite easy to handle all this stuff.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support could be better. The reason is that the Huawei support team is mainly in China. The communication would be mostly in Mandarin. I don't know what's wrong with the China part because whatever email communication comes to us, it looks like it was scanned. Most of the email attachments couldn't go through. Sometimes you request further analysis but unfortunately, all these attachments weren't able to go through. It's the same to even sign out of some solutions. You find software upgrade for new versions, but you're also not able to go through to manage a great firewall. So communication is a major concern.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is okay because you basically have to follow the user interface and configuration. Setup is quite easy to follow as long as you have all these network consents and firewall knowledge, you can do it easily.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

When you compare the price with other products, it's quite cost-effective. But the problem is always after, let's say, two years or three years later because they are not able to provide updates or patches very quickly.

What other advice do I have?

We cannot recommend Huawei NGFW to others. For ourselves, we've already made a decision not to buy this product in the future.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Huawei NGFW a six.

A containerized data center provides prevention, intrusion detection and antivirus features
Pros and Cons
  • "We make use of the new data center, specifically the containerized data center which is built and reviewed by Huawei, including all the device's infrastructure."
  • "The solution could be more secure and have better integration."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for prevention, intrusion detection and its antivirus features.

What is most valuable?

We make use of the new data center, specifically the containerized data center which is built and reviewed by Huawei, including all the device's infrastructure.

What needs improvement?

The solution could be more secure and have better integration. The bandwidth management utilization could stand improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Huawei NGFW for two years.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used pfSense prior to the solution.

What about the implementation team?

Installation is handled by the provider. When a containerized data center is involved, it's built by the deliverers, who are based in China.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I believe that we are entitled to a one-year extension on our licensing.

What other advice do I have?

The solution is cloud-based.

There are over 10,000 users using the solution in our organization.

For the moment, I cannot recommend the solution.

I rate Huawei NGFW as a nine out of ten.

User-friendly, but the dashboard is slow and they need to add IDS/IPS
Pros and Cons
  • "The mapping features and traffic logging are good."
  • "Wi-Fi scanning and Wi-Fi analysis would be useful features to include in the future."

What is most valuable?

The dashboard is user-friendly and very easy to use.

The mapping features and traffic logging are good.

What needs improvement?

The dashboard is a little bit slow and they can improve performance on things like configuring policies.

Wildfire analysis would be useful features to include in the future. This features help Network Administrator to have a detail visibility in the threats coming from the traffic which is analysed by the device itself.

Adding Intrusion Detection (IDS) and Intrusion Prevention (IPS) systems would improve the product. This may exist in the enterprise-grade firewall, but on the mid-level firewall, the functionality is lacking.

I would like to see anti-phishing features included.

Better reporting generation would be useful.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the Huawei next-generation firewall for five years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable solution and it can be integrated with other devices like Cisco.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have not had to contact technical support. When I have needed help, I did research online myself and never had to contact Huawei.

The community support is quite good. On the other hand, it is difficult to find documentation online. This is unlike the case with Cisco, where finding the documentation is easy.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I also have experience with similar solutions by Cisco.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. It takes only a few minutes to deploy.

What other advice do I have?

My recommendation for anybody who is researching this solution is to start with a proof of concept. We no longer use Huawei as our firewall. The number one vendor in the market is Fortinet, then there is Palo Alto, and finally Checkpoint.

I would rate this solution a six out of ten.

Easy to use and the support is impressive
Pros and Cons
  • "I had no difficulty using the Huawei NGFW."
  • "I would like to see an antivirus solution included with the product."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider and this is one of the products that we implement for our clients. We have deployed it to five sites, so far, and the customers use it to protect their data.

What is most valuable?

I had no difficulty using the Huawei NGFW. It is easier to use than some similar solutions by other vendors.

What needs improvement?

The firewall needs to be more configurable.

I would like to see an antivirus solution included with the product.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the Huawei NGFW for more than three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have had no difficulty with bugs, glitches, or instability in general.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is very easy to scale this solution. We have had no trouble with scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have received technical support many times and they are very good. I am very impressed with the support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have also worked with a similar solution from Sophos and the Huawei NGFW is better. One advantage that Sophos has is that there is antivirus functionality included.

How was the initial setup?

Normally, the initial setup is straightforward. The length of time for deployment depends on the client, their environment, and the requirements. For a basic configuration, we can normally deploy within three to five working days. Sometimes, it will take longer because of the requirements, but the basic configuration should not be any longer.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing fees are billed on an annual basis.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, this is a very good firewall. They provide good support and I recommend it.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
