You can deploy the OVA/QCOW2 file to multiple hypervisor platforms or use a RHEL distribution.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the planning tool, the policy engine, workload charts, and the extensive library of dashboards.

How has it helped my organization?

We use Turbonomic to fully optimize the use of our infrastructure. We also use it for health checks and assessments we perform for our customers.

What needs improvement?

The current UI (Adobe Flash) is very clunky and inefficient; however, their new HTML5 UI (in Demo mode) will be GA in late 2017.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for two years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

We have not encountered any deployment issues. It went very smoothly. You can deploy the OVA/QCOW2 file to multiple hypervisor platforms or use a RHEL distribution instead.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Aside from the Flash-based UI needing to be refreshed, it is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

One Turbonomic instance supports up to 10,000 VMs, so no, scalability was not an issue.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Customer service is great.

Technical Support:

Technical support is great.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used vRealize Operations Manager a lot for VMware solution monitoring. I changed to Turbonomic because it is a vendor-agnostic platform that can be used for monitoring, but really is an automation and control platform for optimizing your entire environment.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was straightforward: deploy OVA, assign IP address, log in as administrator, configure your targets, done. You can be up and going within 60 minutes.

What about the implementation team?

An in-house team implemented it.

What was our ROI?

I typically see a 30%-40% ROI in the first year.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Try the solution out; it is easy to set up and the first 30 days are free. After that, scope your requirements and talk to Turbonomic about the cost of the solution and then NEGOTIATE a discount.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing this product, we evaluate d VMware vROps, ManageEngine AppManager, and OpManager.

What other advice do I have?

Try it out for free and see how quickly it can optimize your environment.

Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer: I work for RoundTower Technologies and we are a Platinum partner of Turbonomic.

Being able to easily drill-down to find root issues is valuable.

What is most valuable?

Reporting has added tendentious value.

How has it helped my organization?

Being able to easily drill-down to find root issues.

What needs improvement?

I'd like to see the GUI in HTML5 or something similar. I don't like using Adobe Flash.

For how long have I used the solution?

A year and a half.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Nothing major, only license errors after moving from the product demo phase to the licensed version, which as an easy fix - it did not affect the functionality of the product, just annoying errors.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Nothing. I've rebooted the server once and it turned out to not be a server issue.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No, albeit I haven't scaled out much, there hasn't been any issues with adding some nodes here and there.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Top notch. They have really patient and willing to help in anyway they can. The account teams are responsive and always willing to get you to the right person to help with any issues, big or small.

Technical Support:

They're friendly and really know the product inside and out - as well as the technologies that work with the product.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

At my current company we only had the free stuff from VMware, but other products were used at previous companies like vCOPS. Pricing and user friendlies. Not feeling like a small fish in a big pond. And the product did exactly what I wanted.

How was the initial setup?

Very simply and fast setup. Customizing can feel daunting at first.

What about the implementation team?

Implemented with Turbonomic.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you're on a strict budget and the numbers on the quote aren't far-off, let them work with you. I've also had sizable discounts when returning for more licensing and modules.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Foglight and vROps. Each had their strengths, but overall what suited my company's needs best was Turbonomic.

What other advice do I have?

Shopping around is important and depending on what gaps you're trying to fill one product may be better than the other.

The reporting and capacity planning features are the most valuable for me.

Valuable Features

The reporting and capacity planning features are the most valuable for me.

Improvements to My Organization

The reporting features easily allows me to determine where we are having deficiencies in our virtual environment.

Room for Improvement

Our Oracle database servers requires a large amount of resources within the virtual server. Turbonomic always thinks these servers are over-provisioned and would move resources if they were configured auto mode. The performance of the Oracle database servers would not optimally run if Turbonomic made the changes it thinks necessary.

Use of Solution

About 2 years at this point.

Deployment Issues

The support we receive from the Turbonomic's staff made the installation a breeze.

Customer Service and Technical Support

Customer Service:

Customer Service has been very good and our rep is always reaching out to see how they can make our experience even better.

Technical Support:

Technical Support has been good but we have not had the need to use it very often,

Initial Setup

Very straightforward.

Implementation Team

We implemented directly with Turbonomic and it was one of the easiest implementation we have had.

Its support quality is what all support organizations should aspire to achieve

What is most valuable?

Assure Service Performance.

How has it helped my organization?

Right-sizing and right-balancing VMs and hosts used to be an ongoing, tedious, and time consuming effort. With Turbonomic, it does that work for me so I can focus my attention on other priorities.

What needs improvement?

Interface and navigation can be a challenge if you do not spend a lot of time with it. Creating policies is a bit intimidating and clunky, but that may be on me, because I have not spent much time in the deep end. To Turbonomic's credit, it does what I need it to do with minimal involvement or attention on my part. I am aware that its capabilities are much greater than what I am taking advantage of.

For how long have I used the solution?

Since April 2013.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Deployment could not have be easier.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were a couple issues with some upgrades, but support is excellent, and any issues were resolved by very skilled techs. Because of the nature of the appliance, there was no effect on my production environment.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Excellent. I am noticing quality support seems to be getting harder to come by. Turbonomic's support quality is what all support organizations should aspire to achieve.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The previous "solution" was mostly just guess-work in evaluating vCenter metrics.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was very straightforward. At least getting the appliance up and running and connected to vCenter. Fortunately, support was excellent and provided some hand-holding in the initial configuration, and it has been pretty much set-it-and-forget-it since.

What about the implementation team?

In-house, with the help of support for configuration.

What was our ROI?

Not quantified.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

VMware Operations Manager. Like most things VMware, it is too pricey.

We were able to visibly see the future deployments and the impact that it would have on the existing environment.

What is most valuable?

  • Visibility: Prior to using Turbonomic, we had absolutely no insight into which resources our applications were utilizing.
  • Automation: I have a small number of IT staff and the automation provides a number of huge benefits. The operational tasks are handled by Turbonomic which dramatically reduces the burden on my team, freeing up their time to concentrate on improving the IT infrastructure as opposed to reactive ‘fire-fighting’. The VMs are correctly spec’d to the workload’s demands (with no user impact and performance degradation) circumventing any chances of human error.
  • Plans: We were able to visibly see the future deployments and the impact that it would have on the existing environment.

How has it helped my organization?

Due to the VMs being correctly sized, we had an instant increase in the resources and saw an immediate CapEx saving, as we were in the process of purchasing new equipment.

What needs improvement?

The current Flash user interface is sometimes slow, but the new HTML5 interface is already in development.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There were no stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There were no scal issues.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was very easy. Deployed the OVA, assigned a static IP and linked it to our hypervisors. Saw recommendations to improve our infrastructure within minutes.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing and licensing are fair.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated CloudPhysics. We experienced issues due to the fact that it is a Cloud SaaS solution and faced bandwidth challenges, which resulted in the product being unusable.

What other advice do I have?

Immediate ROI was seen due to the reduced IT infrastructure CapEx.

I highly recommend deploying Turbonomic prior to purchasing any hardware.

Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer: We were so impressed with Turbonomic that we became a partner.
