Pentaho Data Integration and Analytics Initial Setup

Enterprise Data Architect at a manufacturing company with 201-500 employees

Setting up Lumada was pretty straightforward. We just rolled it out and went from proof of concept to live in about a year. I was relatively new to the organization at the time and was still getting a feel for it — knowing where data was and what all these things mean. My experience at a shoe company didn't exactly translate to an auto parts business. I went to classes down in Orlando to learn the product, then we went from there and just tried it. We had a few faux pas here and there, but we knew.

The initial setup wasn't that complicated. You have to set the job environment variables and that was probably the most complicated part, and would be especially so if you're not familiar with it. Otherwise, it was just a matter of downloading the version needed, installing it, and learning how to use the different components. Overall, it was pretty easy and straightforward.

The first time we deployed it, not knowing what we were doing, it took a couple of days, but that was mainly troubleshooting and figuring out what we were doing wrong because we hadn't used it before. After that, it would take maybe 30 minutes or an hour.

In terms of maintenance for Pentaho, one developer per feed is what is typically assigned. It will depend on the workflow of the company and how many feeds are needed. In our case there were five people involved.

It was pretty straightforward for me. I had no problem with configuring it. For my personal use of the product, it took an hour of my time to get it onto my machine. For the Enterprise edition, the deployment is still going on, but it's mainly because we don't have many people on our infrastructure team to help. They have multiple ongoing projects.

The implementation strategy for my personal use case was fairly straightforward. It involved getting the Community edition and configuring it so that I can set up the pipelines for connecting to my data sources and databases and then output to a file share drive for now. All our databases are fairly read-only on our side. In terms of the implementation strategy for the Enterprise edition, we haven't gotten to the stage of completing it, but it'll work somewhat similarly. It's just that the repositories, instead of them being folder repositories, are going to be database-driven, and any code is going to be pushed to the database repository.

I installed it. It was straightforward. It took about a day and a half to get the production environment up and running. That was probably because I was e-learning as I was going. With a services engagement, I bet you would have everything up in a day.

I have built the solution. It does not change for cloud or on-premise developments.

You create in your development environments, then you move to test. After that, you do the volume and integrity testing, then you go to UAT. Finally, you move to production. It does depend on the customer. You can thoroughly create the entire product structure as well as all the files that you need. Once you put it in production, it should work. You should have the same structure in development, test, and production.

There are no separations between the deployment and other teams. Each of our teams acts like an individual contributor. We handle the implementation process all the way from face-to-face business meetings, setting timelines, developing the tools, and defining the requirements, to the production deployment.

The initial setup is straightforward. Currently, the use of versioning control in our organization is quite loose. We are not using any versioning control software. The way we deploy it is just as simple as putting the Kettle transformation file into our EC2 server and rewriting the old file, that's it.

The first deployment was very complex because we didn't have experience with the solution, but the next deployment was simpler.

We create jobs weekly in Pentaho. The development time takes, on average, one week and the deployment takes just one day or so.

We just put it on Git and pull a server and schedule the execution.

We use it on-premises while the infrastructure is Amazon and Azure.

To set up the things, we used a virtual machine. It was a version where we can download it and unlock a machine too. You can do Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V with Pentaho because all you need to have is the newest version of Java. So, it was pretty smooth to do the setup. It took an hour maximum to deploy.

It is simple to deploy Lumada because we can deploy our transformation in three to five simple steps, saving our transformation in a repository.

I open the Pentaho Server web-based version, then I find the transformation that I deployed. I can schedule this transformation at the hour or recurrence in which I want to run the transformation. It is easy. Because at the end of the process, I can save my transformation and Lumada generates the XML file. We can send this XML file to any user of Lumada, who can open up this model and get the transformation that I developed. As a deployment process, it is straightforward, simple, and not complex.

The initial setup was complex, but I'm an engineer and it's my job to deal with complex systems. It's not the most complex that I have dealt with, but it was still somewhat complex. The procedure was explained on the Pentaho website in the documentation. You had to understand which module does what. It was quite complex.

It took quite a long time because I had to troubleshoot, to understand what was wrong, and I had to do it several times before it worked.

The initial setup is very straightforward compared to many other ETL tools. It takes about half a day.

We have about five users, altogether. There are two to three developers, one to two customer people who run the ETLs and one to two admins who take care of the environment itself. It doesn't require much maintenance. Occasionally someone has to restart the server or take a look at logs.

I was involved in the initial migration from Microsoft to Hitachi. It was rather straightforward, not too complex. Granted, it was a new toolset, but that is the same with every new toolset. The learning curve wasn't too steep.

The maintenance effort is not significant. From time to time we have an error that just pops up without our having any idea where it comes from. And then, the next day, it's gone. We get that error something like three times a year. Nobody cares about it or is looking into the details of it.

The migrations from one version to the next that we did were all rather simple. During that process, users don't have it available for a day, but they can live with that. The migration was done over a weekend and by the following Monday, everything was up and running again.

The initial setup was complex because we had to integrate with SAML. Even though they had some direction on that, it was really a do-it-yourself kind of thing. That was pretty complicated, so if they want to keep this product fresh, I think they have to work on making it integrate more with modern technology, like single sign-on and stuff like that. Every organization has that now and Pentaho doesn't have a good story for that. However, it is the platform that they don't give a lot of love to.

It took us a long time to figure it out, something like two weeks.

I would say the deployment/implementation process was straightforward enough for both data ingestion and analytics.

When we started with the data ingestion, we went with something called Spoon. Then we realized, while it was a Pentaho product, Spoon was open source. We had integrated with the open source version of it, but later found that it didn't work for commercialization.

For us to integrate Pentaho and get it working, it took a couple of months because we needed to figure out authentication with Pentaho. So, learning and deployment within our environment took a couple of months. This includes the actual implementation and figuring out how to do what we wanted to do.

Because this is a licensed product, the deployment for the client was a small part of the product's deployment. So, on an individual client basis, the deployment is easy and a small piece.

It gives us the flexibility to deploy it in any environment, which is important to us.

If we went to the cloud version of Pentaho, that would be a big maintenance relief. We wouldn't have to worry about getting the latest version, installing it, and sending it out to our clients.

Maintenance isn't required day-to-day. Our technical staff does the upgrades. They also, on occasion, have to do things like restarting the services, but that's typically related to server issues, not Pentaho itself.
