Simple to set up with great support and easy monitoring
Pros and Cons
  • "Servers came pre-configured for our environment and as soon as they were in the rack, Starwind got them up and running."
  • "Updates need improvement."

What is our primary use case?

We had to replace our infrastructure consisting of about eight aging servers. I began looking for a good, redundant system and ran across the HCAs.

Having never used one before I began researching the different providers as well as looking at going the traditional route. I lucked out by finding StarWinds through a colleague of mine and was greatly impressed. The Dell Enterprise servers not only replaced what we had but also gave me the piece of mind I haven't had in years.

The StarWind system also made managing the units easy and not too time consuming. For a very small IT department, that was key.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution has improved our ability to prepare for future needs by easily being able to add servers, storage, backup devices, and more.

With their highly knowledgeable sales and support team, we are not anxious about upgrading our equipment or suffering long downtimes. We were hosting our ERP environment outside the organization which limited some of the functionality.

With the HCA appliance we are comfortable with it being in-house and finally get to take advantage of some advanced features we have been missing out on.

What is most valuable?

The ability to balance servers across the appliance effortlessly and knowing that if we do experience a hardware failure we can keep on trucking is the most valuable aspect.

I cannot say enough about their support team. They are the greatest and extremely knowledgeable. Proactive support is a lifesaver.

The setup was simple and very fast. Servers came pre-configured for our environment and as soon as they were in the rack, Starwind got them up and running.

Monitoring the servers is a breeze and is possible all on one screen. This makes managing the environment super easy - even for a novice.

What needs improvement?

Updates need improvement. We do not receive critical update notices from Dell. This would be extremely helpful since my primary focus every day is software and DB development and not server updates. A notification when critical updates are available would make management of the systems even easier than it already is.

The StarWind Command console stopped working for us and we managed the system manually. There is an update that we will be taking advantage of within the next week that I am sure will correct this issue.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for 14 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution has been very stable with a single exception. We missed a critical update to the firmware of our Samsung SSDs that took us offline. I wish there had been a way to have had a notification of the missing critical update prior to getting to the failure point.

Even with this,  StarWinds support worked with us and the hardware provider to get us back up quickly with no data loss.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I have nothing bad to say. They are very quick to respond and with the proactive support, they generally know of issues before I do. They are very knowledgeable.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We just used standalone servers previously.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is straightforward with handholding from support every step of the way.

What about the implementation team?

We used the vendor team. They were very highly experienced.

What was our ROI?

Our ROI was almost immediate since we stopped using a hosting company for our ERP environment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is a very affordable solution and extremely easy to set up.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We also evaluated Nutanix.

What other advice do I have?

If this is your first HCA or your next, you will not go wrong with StarWind.

Great software and support, with an easy initial setup
Pros and Cons
  • "We also opted for 24-hour support monitoring for any issues. They are extremely quick to respond on issues we even cause ourselves such as bumping a network cable."
  • "The management console could use a facelift."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Starwind HCA for a Hyper V failover cluster at our community college. We use our virtual environment to run nearly all operations at our school. It has slowly grown while replacing old physical hardware with virtual machines. It runs all email, file shares, SQL databases, IT management, PR display devices, and network security software we use to protect our environment. It replaced more expensive and difficult to maintain hardware that was not able to perform all tasks Starwind is able to.

How has it helped my organization?

It was much more affordable to replace our aging virtual environment with Starwind HCA than traditional hardware. We needed to come up with a budget-friendly solution to replace our old hardware. The support costs were skyrocketing on the old hardware and the performance was severely lacking. Using Starwind allowed us to replace our existing hardware with much faster hosts - and we benefitted especially from the all-flash storage which gave us a significant performance bump compared to our old environment. Overall, it has been a great implementation.

What is most valuable?

The hardware is nothing special, just Dell servers, but the real value is in the software and support. Support is knowledgeable and quick to respond to any issues we have. They helped us configure it from the beginning and were there for us through the few issues we had during the initial configuration.

We also opted for 24-hour support monitoring for any issues. They are extremely quick to respond on issues we even cause ourselves such as bumping a network cable.  They can identify the issue and guide us to fix it without downtime.

What needs improvement?

We would like more complete documentation to manage on your own without support - even though they are great to work with. Sometimes I like to have a better knowledge on my own in case an extreme situation happens that needs to be fixed immediately.

The management console could use a facelift. It appears to do everything needed, but sometimes it is not clear what various options are or do which could be tied back to the documentation. A complete single pane of glass for monitoring would be helpful to self-solve issues without involving support and logs.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable as long as you realize there can be possible split-brain issues with sync if multiple nodes lose power at the same time. This is where the nodes do not know which is the more up to date so they are not sure which way to sync. Support can help resolve the issues should they happen.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Ours is a 3 node, but appears to scale much larger as needed.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is quick to respond and proactive with our additional support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used a traditional host and separate SAN for shared storage costs, which were too high to replace.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy with Starwind support.

What about the implementation team?

The vendor team configured our environment without issue.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is all in one. It is nice to bundle everything together for budgeting purposes.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We also looked at Dell HCL, however, it was more expensive and complicated.

We no longer have to manage storage via multiple local server disks

What is our primary use case?

We used to have four Dell EMC PowerEdge hosts running various versions of Microsoft Hyper-V with no redundancy.

We are also running out of storage space and have been dealing with an increasing complexity of Windows Server licensing.

We investigated and received proposals from three vendors (Dell EMC, Scale Computing and StarWind). Ultimately, the main decision point was cost. StarWind is the only vendor that only needs two nodes to set up the cluster. Not only have we saved on the extra node, but we also don't have to license another Windows Server Datacenter edition.

Our StarWind HCA has been in production over 12 months, and we have had no issues or single downtime so far.

How has it helped my organization?

It has achieved our goals of centralizing storage management because of the StarWind Virtual SAN, added fault tolerance, and simplified Microsoft server licensing, by using the Datacenter edition.

What is most valuable?

  • StarWind Virtual SAN. We no longer have to manage storage via multiple local server disks.
  • Added fault tolerance helps everybody sleep easier at night knowing we can lose an entire node without affecting production.

What needs improvement?

It could potentially be less reliable due to the Hypervisor, and the cluster relies on Microsoft Windows Server. However, we have not had any issue since putting them in production 12 months ago.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not had any issue since putting it in production 12 months ago.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's good for what we do — an SMC with hybrid cloud.

How are customer service and technical support?

Tech support has been quick, has a very quick response, and they also provocatively monitor the appliance's status.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

No.

How was the initial setup?

Fairly straightforward because StarWind handles most of the setup. We did handle the network setup because we added redundancy at the switch level.

What about the implementation team?

A combination of vendor team and in-house team. Their level of expertise is good.

What was our ROI?

We reduced manpower on managing servers and storage. It helps us by not having to hire an extra IT person.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's the only vendor that allow two nodes, all other vendors I researched at that time (late 2017) requires at least three nodes.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, we evaluated Dell EMC VxRail and Scale HC3.

Reliable with excellent uptime and helpful support
Pros and Cons
  • "Reliability and overall uptime are key as we're also hosting client environments in addition to our own."
  • "The response time is usually several hours after the issue occurred."

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution as a high availability failover cluster in our data center.

How has it helped my organization?

StarWind HCA is much more reliable than our original failover cluster solution. Not even just by being more modern hardware, the virtual SAN allowed us to dramatically decrease our footprint and power consumption in our data center and is much simpler to manage.

Any issues we've had along the way have been Windows issues as opposed to problems with the StarWind vSAN software.

What is most valuable?

Reliability and overall uptime are key as we're also hosting client environments in addition to our own. Bumps along the way have been resolved with the help of StarWind's fantastic support, and, as previously mentioned, pretty much any and all issues we've had have been Windows issues as opposed to their software, which their support has been happy to help troubleshoot and is refreshing to see

What needs improvement?

The proactive monitoring is nice. Knowing that they're watching for issues simultaneously with us.

However, the response time is usually several hours after the issue occurred. Any disruption is felt immediately by the users, so we're already troubleshooting within a few minutes, and we reach out to support if needed before the proactive alert comes through to us.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've used the solution between three and four years.

Updates are much less painful, and the proactive support is fantastic

What is our primary use case?

We are a small school with 700 users. We replaced an eight-year-old HP system (two HP DL360 G7s and an HP StorageWorks X1600) with a two-node HCA cluster.

How has it helped my organization?

Our two goals were to improve performance and add high availability. Even before implementation, the StarWind team analyzed our current workload to determine which HCA would be appropriate for us. This allowed us to make a decision based on data rather than guesswork.

Performance has been excellent, and we have really noticed a big improvement from our old system. Our other goal, improving fault tolerance, was immediately realized with the installation of the second HCA node. We have been running flawlessly since day one with zero downtime. The second node also allows us to perform maintenance without having to take servers offline.

What is most valuable?

The management interface is really easy to use. Updates are much less painful, and the proactive support is fantastic. New command center is a nice addition.

What needs improvement?

We are happy with the product, and my only suggestion would be a better process for an unplanned power outage.

For how long have I used the solution?

Four years

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have been pleased so far. Zero downtime.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It meets the needs of smaller organizations. I think they are upfront that the HCA solution is not tailored towards large organizations.

How are customer service and support?

They have proactive support which prior to using StarWind, was a new concept for us. It's incredible. We spend less time troubleshooting and more time on other important tasks.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used an HP StorageWorks X1600 for our shared storage with two HP DL360 G7s as our hosts. We switched due to performance issues (slow backups) and to increase fault tolerance since we only had one shared storage device.

How was the initial setup?

So simple. The StarWind team does most of the initial configuration, and we finished on site. We were up and running in two days.

What about the implementation team?

75% vendor team and 25% in-house. Expertise was top notch which is to be expected since it's their product.

What was our ROI?

N/A.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Do your research. You will find that nothing compares to the value you get with the HCA appliance. If you have a limited budget, the decision is an easy one.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes. We evaluated Nutanix, HPE, Dell, NetApp, Scale.

What other advice do I have?

We have been running Starwind for four years now and it's still rock solid and one of the best decisions we've made.

Increased performance, proactive support, and the redundancy gives us a good sense of security
Pros and Cons
  • "The full suite of redundancy gives a nice sense of security for the whole environment."
  • "I think some performance metrics would be nice to see, especially on the storage side."

What is our primary use case?

We used this solution to upgrade a bunch of old stand-alone servers to a cluster. There were at least eight different servers, some up to ten years old, running production loads on Hyper-V. Since everything worked, it was hard to get budget approval. Finally, we got someone to listen and we were able to get momentum on this project.

We got the three-node cluster in, and moving everything over was easy with no downtime to the approximately 400 users. Now that everything is on a cluster, the redundancy helps IT sleep at night. We have had to do some maintenance and there has been no interruption.

How has it helped my organization?

Our environment went from a hodge-podge of Hyper-V servers of various ages and capacities to a simple-to-manage three-node cluster. The three nodes are interconnected, so we didn't even have to invest in additional network infrastructure.

There is redundancy, so if one node has an issue, the users have no idea and everything stays functional! There is a noted increase in speed both on the production loads as well as the backup (Veeam) being much easier to manage and running significantly faster.

Power consumption is down, so there was less need for UPS capacity and cooling as well.

What is most valuable?

The configuration we purchased was built on Hyper-V, so there was no additional training for staff. The rest of the management tools are on Windows, so anyone with a little bit of IT background should be able to figure it out.

The full suite of redundancy gives a nice sense of security for the whole environment. Support has been stellar and we're notified of an issue before we even knew about it. We worked with support to get parts replaced and delivered the next business day and there was no downtime to the users!

What needs improvement?

I think some performance metrics would be nice to see, especially on the storage side. Since we have a decent amount of storage on our cluster, 80TB, knowing what our IOPS and typical usage is would be handy. There are times where something 'feels' slow so it would be nice what was happening on the storage side.

I do wish that if we needed more compute capacity, that we could do it without needing to invest in a lot of network equipment. That is hardly StarWind's fault, but just something to think about.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the StarWind HyperConverged Appliance for between six and nine months.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

If we had smaller needs, the amount of expansion would have been more. We went fairly large since we only get money once in a blue moon. There is some additional storage scalability, although not a ton.

We can add plenty of RAM. If we wanted more CPU then sure, those could be replaced!

How are customer service and technical support?

We had one issue with a part failing, and we were informed by support before we even knew. The part and on-site engineer was dispatched. It was a redundant part, so there was no impact on anything. Nice to know they are all over it!

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Nothing in the HCA realm, just stand-alone Hyper-V machines.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very easy. Support ran through everything remotely and we were up in a few hours. It was nothing we probably could not have done ourselves, but it was nice to have an expert do it and have it up.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented purely in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We didn't have any issue with pricing or any of the sales process. If anything, we were difficult with changing what we wanted to include on the HCA all the time. Sales rolled with us without any issue.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did look at moving hypervisors and HCA platforms but passed because the amount of change to management would have been a lot for the current staff.

What other advice do I have?

We are very happy and the number of incidents and stress has been greatly reduced.

Proactive support monitors the health of the cluster and hardware and reaches out if they see anything out of the norm
Pros and Cons
  • "With StarWind's Proactive monitoring we can go about our day helping our customers and not have to worry about our cluster's health."
  • "Multi cluster support for their Command Console would be very beneficial. Currently, you can only work with a single cluster at a time. The console is new so I expect much growth in this area in the near future. The other area that could be improved is the tech support locale."

What is our primary use case?

We are an MSP that offers IT services to SMB companies in our area. We wanted to branch out and start offering hosting services in the form of offsite backup and server. To achieve this we needed a highly available cluster of servers. We started off designing a typical cluster/SAN setup but decided that we wanted the simplicity of hyper-converged architecture instead. In researching HCA we found that StarWind offered exactly that as well of proactive monitoring support for the cluster. Having an extra set of eyes on the health of the equipment was a huge selling point.

How has it helped my organization?

StarWind has given us the ability to have a failover cluster without the complications of a SAN network. We are able to offer extra services to our customers that we haven't been able to in the past. Small companies can be wary of the large cloud providers so having a StarWind HCA cluster we were able to give our customers the ability to grow into the cloud while also staying with a company they have worked with and known for years. With StarWind's proactive monitoring we can go about our day helping our customers and not have to worry about our cluster's health.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is its Proactive support. They monitor the health of the cluster and hardware and reach out if they see anything out of the norm. They will then work with us through the entire resolution process whether it be a hardware issue or an issue with the StarWind vSAN services. If the issue turns out to be hardware related they will then work with the hardware manufacturer and get any replacement parts needed. Their techs are also very knowledgeable and have always been able to resolve any issues without any kind of long drawn out escalation process no matter the time of day.

What needs improvement?

Multi cluster support for their Command Console would be very beneficial. Currently, you can only work with a single cluster at a time. The console is new so I expect much growth in this area in the near future. The other area that could be improved is the tech support locale.  Currently, all of their tech support is located in eastern Europe so if you have any issues understanding thick accents it may be a little frustrating. With that being said they have never got frustrated with me asking them to repeat themselves, they've always been very patient.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using it in full production for about seven months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability has been good. We've had one issue with the StarWind service locking up causing full sync to be performed. During this sync, there wasn't any noticeable performance impact by our users.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

If you provide your own switches instead of doing their direct connect option you should be able to scale this solution very well. If you go direct connect you are limited to 3 nodes.  Adding additional storage should be easy if you have available hard drive bays.

How are customer service and technical support?

Tech support has been fantastic. Always willing to help no matter what time of day/night.  I've never had to have an issue escalated as the first contact tech has always been able to solve any issues/questions.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

This is my first venture into the HCA world.

How was the initial setup?

StarWind performed most of the initial setup for us. We racked the equipment and then they remoted in and configured everything. We did not have any existing VMs to migrate so it was a simple setup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Cost is very reasonable and shouldn't catch anyone off guard if you've looked at other HCA devices.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We also looked at Nutanix, HP Simplivity, VxRails, and Scale.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

We can migrate VMs from node to node in a matter of seconds
Pros and Cons
  • "However, StarWind HCA won us over in two areas: price and support. We were actually able to install an all-flash StarWind HCA for less than other vendors' spinning rust solutions! We were able to roll five years of warranty and support into the purchase price and still save thousands of dollars upfront."
  • "We ran into some issues with going from Hyper-V 2012 R2 to Hyper-V 2019."

Prior to implementing StarWind HCA, we had six stand-alone Hyper-V hosts. The setup was not ideal for many reasons. Because we didn’t have shared storage, we had to move virtual machines from host to host using Shared Nothing Live Migration over 1Gbps NICs. Not a pretty picture. The host servers had all reached end of life support. They were to a point where the spinning drives were failing way too frequently. With this stand-alone server architecture, we were relying solely on the RAID configuration as our only redundancy. I knew the direction we needed to go, but the budget never got us there.

I had researched solutions for a long time before actually having the budget to move forward on the project. I had set up a virtual lab and familiarized myself with StarWind. Just about everything I had ever read about StarWind had been positive. When the college's budget finally afforded us the opportunity to upgrade virtual server infrastructure, StarWind was my first call. I knew I wanted to compare their product with other hyperconverged solutions, as well as traditional SAN and compute nodes solutions, and that's what we did.

Analysis showed that from a technical perspective, other solutions we looked at would have worked in our environment. However, StarWind HCA won us over in two areas: price and support. We were actually able to install an all-flash StarWind HCA for less than other vendors' spinning rust solutions! We were able to roll five years of warranty and support into the purchase price and still save thousands of dollars upfront.

So how does one gauge support prior to purchase? Somewhat, we were taking a leap of faith that support would be as good as I had read about. We did have a good pre-sales support experience in that StarWind takes the time to analyze Live Optics data to ensure customers get the right hardware to meet their particular needs. Going from six host servers to only two, I want to make sure we were getting enough hardware! Of course, it wasn't pre-sales support that I was purchasing. I can happily say that support after the sale is just as good. The team really went above and beyond when it came to helping us get the appliance stood up and production VMs moved off of our old hardware. We ran into some issues with going from Hyper-V 2012 R2 to Hyper-V 2019. It turned out the issues were purely Hyper-V related -- nothing to do with the StarWind software at all -- but tech support was there to help troubleshoot until everything was running smoothly.

With the appliance up and running, all of the pain points I mentioned at the start have been addressed. We can migrate VMs from node to node in a matter of seconds. No more Shared Nothing Live Migrations! No more server sprawl! We now have redundancy and the speed of all-flash drives. I've been very pleased with the outcome of this purchase and will recommend StarWind to anyone who seeks my input.
