We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Report Studio: This is the most powerful and sophisticated tool for professional reporting.""The most valuable feature is developing reports from different data sources, making it a reliable data source.""Self-service is possible through the use of dashboards, which are also very intuitive. Stories can be used to pin snapshots, tell the story for meetings, etc.""Cognos' most valuable features are the bundled studios, simple UI, and advanced features like the ability to create data modules.""Using custom controls, it is possible to extend the application with even more functionality and make the application intuitive and attractive.""The solution's initial setup process is easy.""Comparing IBM Cognos to other applications, once a person is trained on it or they have developed a skill set to operate the application, it is best in its category.""For planning, forecasting, in-boxing, modeling in general and for predicting numbers and doing work analysis, they are excellent."

"I like having the ability to connect Excel files as data inputs.""I like the downloadable visualizations a lot. I think that they give the user a very nice starting point in creating awesome dashboards, with the right way to tell their data story.""PowerBi is used to import our production data and generate dashboards, then integrates other Excel sheets to provide managers dashboards. This helps them get insights to make better OEE improvement decisions, mainly where to focus resources. We became able to see indicators from any time frame (day, week, month, or year), then could make better decisions.""Technical support is quite responsive.""Its seamless integration with Microsoft products, such as Microsoft SQL Server or Microsoft Excel, is the most valuable.""It's a great tool for visualization data, and it's free for engineers.""It is very well integrated with other Microsoft products, including PowerApps and Excel, as well as Access, so it fits well into our workflow.""It's quite flexible, and it's easy to create reports using this system. It is very graphic and very user friendly."

More Microsoft Power BI Pros →

"Pentaho is an analytics platform that can be used when an organization has a lot of big data storage systems already installed and needs to manage and analyze that data. It has a specific use case for unstructured data, such as documents, and needs to be able to search and analyze it.""We were able to install it without any assistance from tech support.""The most valuable feature of Pentaho is the Tableau report.""Pentaho Business Analytics' best features include the ease of developing data flows and the wide range of options to connect to databases, including those on the cloud.""The initial setup is pretty straightforward.""Easy to use components to create the job.""I use the BI Server, CDE Dashboards, Saiku, and Kettle, because these tools are very good and highly experienced."

Cons
"They were lacking in the initial phases of development in the area of big data, and they still need to improve that aspect of the product.""The technical support team’s response time is slow and needs to be improved.""I think the GIS pieces maybe not as good as we would like.""There are a lot of limitations with the out-of-the-box tool.""The data uploads that we do, such as Excel files, have a lot of restrictions. If we can make it a bit more user-friendly, allowing us to have more flexibility it would be a great help.""The AI-based features could be further enhanced by the solution.""IBM Support can be slow at times, but they can usually deliver in a timely manner.""It would be better if it is was easier to implement without extensive training for it."

More IBM Cognos Cons →

"The solution could improve by simplifying the user interface and adding integration or compatibility with APA.""There could be an integrated AI that can automatically analyze some of your data and highlight or provide suggestions. For example, when you are looking at a data set, it can suggest putting it into a certain type of chart so that you gain different insights or a trend line. You would almost have templates that it would recommend for you.""The cost of the solution can get high.""I would like Microsoft to include some inbuilt machine learning so that it becomes point-and-click, rather than us developing models out of API and BI connecting to that and getting the results. That process gets in the way of continuity.""It's not user-friendly; more tutorials, training, and better documentation would be helpful.""The biggest thing with Microsoft right now is better support. There should be more timely support. We can do 90% of it ourselves by the same token. When we're into the 10%, we do not get timely support via Microsoft's support team.""The integration with third-party products could be more stable.""When it comes to improvement, I would say there could be more tutorials for students in universities who are just learning it. And it wouldn't have to be just for students in universities. It might also be for the people who use it in the real world."

More Microsoft Power BI Cons →

"We did not achieve the ROI. The work delivered to users had lesser value than the subscription cost.""Logging capability is needed.""Pentaho, at the general level, should greatly improve the easy construction of its dashboards and easy integration of information from different sources without technical user intervention.""Deployment is not simple. It is not simple because we are dealing with a lot of data; we are dealing with a lot of storage. So, it's not a simple process.""Another concern is that Pentaho is not customizable or interactive.""Pentaho Business Analytics' user interface is outdated.""Version control would be a good addition.""The repository should be improved."

IBM Cognos applies techniques to describe, summarize, and compare data, and draw conclusions. This allows users to see trends and discover anomalies or variances that may not be evident by simply reading data. Data sources that contain information from different areas of a business can be stored in separate packages. Users can see only information that they have been granted access to, based on their group or role.

IBM Cognos BI consolidates the following business intelligence functions into a single web-based solution:

    • IBM Cognos Insight: Create personal and managed workspaces for data analysis. Using these interactive workspaces, you can share insight results with managers. Cognos Insight supports write-back, and you can also use these workspaces to capture and integrate management goals, commitments, and forecasts.

IBM Cognos stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Two major ones are its powerful analysis tool and its reporting capabilities.

Prasad B., a senior software engineer at a financial services firm, notes, “The product is a very good reporting tool and is very flexible. It allows for the users to get a scheduled report. We can receive automated reports as well. They are easy to schedule on a weekly or monthly basis. It is very fast. I mean in means of report output, it's very fast compared to the actual clients involved.”

Microsoft Power BI is a powerful tool for data analysis and visualization. This tool stands out for its ability to merge and analyze data from various sources. Widely adopted across different industries and departments, Power BI is instrumental in creating visually appealing dashboards and generating insightful business intelligence reports.
