Quotes From Members Comparing IBM Cognos vs. SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
For planning, forecasting, in-boxing, modeling in general and for predicting numbers and doing work analysis, they are excellent.A positive feature is Report Studio, where we create beautiful, complex reports. The most valuable feature is developing reports from different data sources, making it a reliable data source. It's enabled us to report directly from our main application systems. We're removing islands of data and we're removing inefficiencies, where people or small divisions had their own store of information.Using custom controls, it is possible to extend the application with even more functionality and make the application intuitive and attractive.Self-service is possible through the use of dashboards, which are also very intuitive. Stories can be used to pin snapshots, tell the story for meetings, etc.Integration with Office can enable the 'download' mode of storytelling.Mapbox integration for geospatial analytics down to longitude/latitude layers.

It gives you a lot of flexibility in designing your dashboards. We use it to identify critical KPIs to senior management. It has been extremely valuable, to combine data from various data sources. It can process big volumes of data fast.Through the use of Business Intelligence reporting and scheduling features, reports are generated and automatically sent according to a schedule. This has freed up countless hours spent performing the same tasks, month over month.Enables us to present data with Smart Objects that can be embedded within presentations and which automatically update when the presentations are run.Reporting from SAP Business Objects Web Intelligence is amazing, and gives users the ability to quickly access data from existing universes and/or relevant data sources, without the need to involve a functional business analyst or financial analyst.Provides autonomy for all the business users to develop their own reports.

Cons
The charts and graphics are weak.We need more predictive analytical functions, not only diagnostic or decryptic analytics. One thing that we really want is the ability to have data portrayed on an image. Cognos is not able to do it at the moment, and that's becoming a requirement from the business side: having an image and then plotting your dataset on top of the image as a map.I think the GIS pieces maybe not as good as we would like.Extending features on dashboards so it becomes a real dashboard building application, not only a data exploration tool.Extending dynamic cubes aggregate awareness with calculated measures. One key area for improvement is the need to improve the self-service nature and functionality of the product in terms of visual analytics.Chart quality: many other competitors have charts and graphics that look much better and that provide dynamic effects. Cognos doesn't.

The combination of Lumira along with Design Studio merger last year still needs development from a visualization standpoint.SAP BusinessObjects is actually losing popularity within our company because people find the user interface and the way things are set up not to be as easy as many other tools that are on the market, like Qlik and things like that. The admin features for disk space management need work. It's very difficult to manage the disk space by the application; good admin features and not included to allow you to do that. I don't believe that is in the latest version of the product either.Currently, we can use Explore to do data discovering, but cannot generate charts. The biggest area for improvement would be the dashboarding capabilities due to the recent change from Xcelsius to Dashboard Designer. This has created a gigantic ripple in many companies because the skill sets required are drastically different. This product could be improved with Cloud Integrations and Predictive Analytics functions integration.More thorough testing of Service Packs before release. The calculation engine requires some improvement.

Depending on your size, try to stick with SAP BusinessObjects BI Edge. Most people tend to overthink the licensing. Remember that one concurrent user means that one person can be performing a task at a given time. That does not mean that only one user can be on the system at a time, it means that only one person can be refreshing a report or designing a dashboard. There are tons of ways you can access your data or reports without consuming a license. I've seen cases where five concurrent licenses support thousands of users. There's no additional charge for a Development environment license, so build an additional development server. It is not an expensive platform. The licensing is for a package of users starting at 10 users. It has an option of a Cloud Platform (SAP Analytics Cloud) which has a lower price than the on-premise platform, and you can buy individual licences per user.Just work with SAP to make sure you have enough licenses but don't go overboard.
