Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The product is good for backups.""The initial setup is easy.""The fast backup and recovery and the Full Backup features are valuable.""For the on-prem backup, it has all the necessary features that we require. They keep coming up with new scripts and new updates.""They are extremely reliable and scalable — they provide the best de-duplication on the market.""Dell EMC Avamar has many valuable features. It's very stable and it's easy to manage.""The backup and recovery speed is very fast.""We have seen huge data reduction and data deduplication and compression, which is very cost-effective and cost-reducing for the company."

"What is very handy for our clients is the consolidated view. They have a dashboard with everything, through a single pane of glass. This is what they really need because, within seconds, they can have a good overview and see if there are any errors or any issues.""The central pane view is the most valuable feature. You have one console where you can monitor all your jobs, as opposed to going to different vCenters.""The Exchange plugin is the most valuable because we have a lot of customers that use SnapManager Exchange and have to migrate to SnapCenter.""The backup features are the most valuable because they allow the DBAs to replace SnapManager for Oracle (SMO), which is going away, and to do cloning as well. We can also clone to different servers and have the actual backup clone mounted on different servers. And we can split easily too.""It's a centralized, easy-to-use solution empowering RBAC management, monitoring, notifications, extensive logging, and backup schedules for standalone as well as groups of the same types of environments. The cloning capabilities accelerate development.""Restoring and cloning are easy to do.""The main advantage is its fast backup and restore.""The centralized GUI is the best feature, that there is only one webpage where we can see the states of all the backup jobs. We can see all the tasks that are running and we can quickly see if one fails; if they are running or have any issues. We have all that in one place."

Cons
"Technical support should be more knowledgeable.""It's not the best solution for big databases.""Some customers need to back up to tape, but Avamar lacks support, so it costs a lot.""Interfaces need to be improved.""Avamar is not the best tool when it comes to taking Azure backups. Like Commvault, if Avamar can support VM-level backups for the cloud, that would make it a bit better.""Backup image browse times should be faster.""The UI is quite old. We've been using this UI since last year, and they haven't changed it. It would be better to update the UI periodically and create attractive dashboards from an administrative point of view.""If you don't have DPA, the reporting features are not as user-friendly, so reporting is something that they can improve on."

"I feel a little bit that during the whole process of putting this software into production we were like a beta program. It was full of bugs... For example, we had a problem with truncating our Exchange log files... It has improved over time.""We have experience some difficulties with our current support. We are engaging in engineering level support because some of our problems are more technical.""We tend to have a lot of Hyper-V... so now we have two management consoles and we would ideally like to leverage SnapCenter to include Hyper-V.""The replication feature needs improvement in future releases.""The documentation could be a little bit better so that we could handle more of the troubleshooting ourselves, rather than having to go through support.""The GUI is still so-so. I' don't use the GUI that often anymore because it's really slow, refreshing disks, refreshing hosts, and you have to click a lot.""We would like to see more granular repording and reporting in bigger sets available in SnapCenter.""Reporting of the jobs could be better."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It is very expensive. It's a trust based licensing. So that's an ethical challenge."
  • "This solution is less expensive than Veeam for us, although it depends on the customer because we get a great discount."
  • "I'm not sure, but perhaps the pricing could be done better at the moment."
  • "The price is the main thing I'd like to see them change. If they can come down in price, that would be a good thing. It's very cost competitive in the entry level range, because Veeam pricing is much cheaper than Avamar."
  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."

  • "It's free. The license is included with other NetApp products."
  • "We see a financial value with SnapCenter because we don't have to license Commvault, which is pretty expensive."
  • "We have a site license, so it comes with the product."
  • "The license for SnapCenter was included with the storage array."
  • "It comes free with the amount of equipment we purchase from NetApp. In terms of pricing, zero is my favorite number."
  • "Pricing is very good because if you already have NepApp controllers, then it's included."
  • "The licensing is well-designed because it's already included in some packages with NetApp storage. Therefore, for most customers, it's okay as the SnapCenter license is already included in some NetApp bundles."
  • "The product is inexpensive."
