We performed a comparison between Dell Unity XT and VNX [EOL] based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out what your peers are saying about Dell Technologies, NetApp, Pure Storage and others in All-Flash Storage."We consume less physical storage because of the solution’s deduplication and compression."
"It's very fast and very easy to use. It performs well and is both flexible and compatible. We like it because it's easy to use."
"It worked flawlessly."
"The ease of use. That's what our customers love. They say it's very easy, they don't need special training, they don't need to call us or any other company or integrator to help them do their job. That's the main reason they purchase Pure."
"It helps to simplify storage because it has an easy front-end to access everything."
"Simplicity and reliability are the most valuable feature of Pure Storage FlashArray."
"The most valuable features are extremely low latency, high IOPS with VMware, inline deduplication and compression."
"It's just very easy for general block storage."
"Stable flash storage platform with good scalability, efficiency, and speed."
"It is easy to set up the solution."
"Integration; We use the product with VMware, and also use it with Syft for home directory and departmental shares."
"This product is perfect for small, and mid-range customers who need to pay less, but still, get enterprise-level capabilities."
"It has saved us time when provisioning new storage, so we're trying to automate that process."
"The high availability of Dell EMC Unity XT has been the most important feature."
"They've integrated NAS and SAN pretty well. It made replication very simple. Because one of our systems has a lot of LANs, for it to replicate we have Consistency Groups in there. That's something that is really helpful, making sure that everything is working not just for replication but for backups as well."
"I like the idea that it can compress and dedupe inline. That is quite a stunning feature for mid-range customers."
"FAST (auto-tiering): Doesn't require configuration and is managed by the array itself."
"The replication feature provides another functionality to protect your data."
"Multi-tiering, positively affects the efficiency of the storage space."
"It is very stable even during multiple power failures."
"The implementation of both block and file system storage in a single GUI provides is better situated than most other storages."
"The most valuable feature is the auto-tiering, which helps in the speed of data access."
"Good performance for VM environments"
"The most valuable feature is the tight VMware integration, due to the migration from bare metal to virtualized environments and then on to the cloud."
"Pure Storage FlashArray could improve the recent file storage capabilities because it is lacking a lot of features."
"I would like the ability to swap out the network adapters into it. So, without taking out the whole controller, I would like to be able to swap adapters. This would make things easier."
"It would be nice if Pure had something in its portfolio that provided higher deduplication and compression for backups."
"The price of the solution can improve."
"In the next release of the solution I would like to see Vormetric native block encryption."
"I had to contact customer support when a drive failed as I was doing a couple of OS upgrades."
"CIFS and SMB Shares cannot be mounted directly."
"In the next version of this program, I would like to see increased security, higher encryption, and faster throughput."
"I would like it to be a little bit easier to contact support. We can contact support, but we have to go through a phone tree. We get routed to different places. I might call support to say that I need a drive replaced and get transferred to three different groups before I get to the group I actually need."
"I think that they could do a better job of testing on the back-end, for the code revisions. I've heard of some issues down the line where people have upgraded to the latest code and there were bugs in it, and they had to release a subsequent code fix."
"In the dashboard there could be notification of duplicate files and the like, so we don't have to rely on Windows to do that."
"Improve the administrative user interface so it is easier to work with. Currently, a simple task, such as removing a host from 100 LUNS, takes a lot of time. If they could improve LUN to host model to be more like the EMC VPLEX, for example, it would be great."
"There is no de-duplication. Unity used to be Bionics, which had de-duplication; however, in Dell Unity XT, the de-duplication was deprecated and is no longer available."
"Dell Unity XT could improve the compatibility of some of the features. Some of my customers had some problems. Additionally, it would be beneficial for the solution to have advanced AI and ML features."
"It could always use native replication. Then I could get rid of RecoverPoint."
"Scalability for the 650F is good, but I was expecting a little bit more."
"EMC VNX needs to support bigger SSDs. Next generation EMC Unity will do this."
"If the VNX had embedded encryption, that would be great."
"The management software used for the VNX is Unicenter. While it is an improvement over Navicenter, used in older EMC SANs, it still feels outdated in comparison to other SAN management software."
"The scalability is average because the storage has some hardware limitations and, obviously, operating system limitations."
"VNX can improve by offering flexible upgrade options. It's not possible to add a single HDD to a current array and there are fixed rules to make upgrades."
"Intel Xeon processors with under 2 GHz processing speeds could be replaced with more recent ones."
"It would be very helpful to get an automated report that shows you the size of the checkpoints and get warnings when a checkpoint is reaching either maximum capacity per a file system or hitting the ceiling on the SavVol pool consumption."
"There is no easy way to defrag a RAID group. It would be nice to be able to reduce the size of a storage pool if the storage is not needed anymore."

Unity series is re-engineered VNX, so the Unity is newer … it makes better use of flash, active – active , dual controller mode; better price point , configurations solid upgrade from the VNX
Go for Unity. It’s the newest model and the base software is now better than VNX.
Unity is newer. Go with newer of the 2 if these are your only options.
Both systems are good middle storage systems but the unity family is latest.
The unity 400 is an hybrid flash where you can install classic HDD and
SSD. So you can reduce costs and optimize your storage for your
requirement.
Some function (that will be available in 4Q17) are interest like :
* support for inline compression,
* deduplication
* zero detect.
Deduplication is an expensive cycle system and I suggest to use it with
SSD. These function deduplication and zerodetect produce an hard
reduction of user space and if you need to reduce it without lost
performances I suggest an all-flash system and not an hybrid. Zerodetect
can give benefits, for istance in VmWare enviroment, for istance when
you inizialize a volume; or when you copy data from an old storage
systems to this one.
This systems can grow up 16 PB
VNX family is an old architecture, but has good point for use it. Has a
low cost, you can install some SSD. This system scale up to 0,5 PB
Which is better storage system for you ? It depend where you use this
storage system.
In other words if this storage system is the core of your IT
architecture and you are thinking :
* that you need of high performances,
* that it will grow in a couple of mounth, but you do not know when,
* that on this system there is the virtual server workload
So use Unity!
If this storage system is one of more storage systems in your storage
enviroment where you need to a lot of performances but it will not grow.
Use VNX!
With Dell EMC, you can continue to work with the midrange and ensure high performance. Dell EMC Unity 400F environment SAN and high performance for NAS. Dell EMC Unity 400F Performs Replication operations on Snapshot (Snapshot), Local Area Network and Remote Network. In addition, systems such as VMware, Microsoft and OpenStack can work.
First of all, DELL EMC will announce the end of life of VNX in JAN so take in consideration this point.
Secondly, UNITY is better than VNX in terms of performance, scalability and price. However my advice to you is to be “modern” and go for Unity 350F ALL FLASH, from now on consider the all flash in everything in case of using virtual san or SAN storage. Unity 350F is the same cache 96GB as unity 400 hybrid and scalability is more and more better than 400 because nowadays the single SSD capacity up to 15 TB so it will scale more. In addition to, All Flash models contains unified, deduplication, compression and dynamic pools and this is the best option in All flash because goodbye for the traditional way of building a pool with a hot spare and a parity, now you can put the exact capacity you want by adding one disk or 2 or whatever you want not like the old days build the same pool as the previous one installed in the storage box.
To sum up, please reconsider your choise and put the ALL Flash unity as option 1.
EMC VNX 2500 or EMC Unity 400. Which one is the newer and better Storage and why?
Which Storage is the latest and which one functions better and Why?
Unity is the newer box and I think it will replace the Vnx family eventually.
Unity support SAN, NAS and ISCSI also Flash and Standard disks .
The only drawback I know of is that Unity uses TLC for the flash disks
As a new purchase, the Unity will have a longer support life as the VNX line will gradually be phased out.
The management software in the Unity is newer and easier to configure and manage, which is often important in a smaller organisation that does not have SAN skills. If you decide to take an EMC Unity array there is a new HMTL5 GUI versus the VNX 5200 which uses now out of date Java versions.
Both the Unity 400 and VNX5200 arrays are widely installed, reliable and both make excellent storage platforms for production applications and virtualised environments.
