We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We are able to deploy within half an hour and we only require one person to complete the implementation.""The Log analytics are useful.""We didn't have anything similar. So, it really provides value from the incidents and automation point of view. The overview of the security fabric is most valuable.""The native integration of the Microsoft security solution has been essential because it helps reduce some false positives, especially with some of the impossible travel rules that may be configured in Microsoft 365. For some organizations, that might be benign because they're using VPNs, etc.""Sentinel improved how we investigate incidents. We can create watchlists and update them to align with the latest threat intelligence. The information Microsoft provides enables us to understand thoroughly and improve as we go along. It allows us to provide monthly reports to our clients on their security posture.""The log analysis is excellent; it can predict what can or will happen regarding use patterns and vulnerabilities.""Log aggregation and data connectors are the most valuable features.""The main benefit is the ease of integration."

More Microsoft Sentinel Pros →

"The most valuable feature is the search function, which allows me to go directly to the target to see the specific line a customer is searching for.""Elastic is straightforward, easy to integrate, and highly customizable.""It's a good platform and the very best in the current market. We looked at the Forester report from December 2022 where it was said to be a leader.""It's simple and easy to use.""Enables monitoring of application performance and the ability to predict behaviors.""Its flexibility is most valuable. We can have a number of scenarios, and we can get logs from anything. If we know how to use Logstash, we can tweak it in many ways. This makes the logging search on Elastic very easy.""The visualization is very good.""Elastic has a lot of beats, such as Winlogbeat and Filebeat. Beats are the agents that have to be installed on the terminals to send the data. When we install beats or Elastic agents on every terminal, they don't overload the terminals. In other SIEM solutions such as Splunk or QRadar, when beats or agents are installed on endpoints, they are very heavy for the terminals. They consume a lot of power of the terminals, whereas Elastic agents hardly consume any power and don't overload the terminals."

"The security level that they are maintaining with the pre-authentication keys is very good."

Cons
"We do see continuous improvement all the time, however, I haven't got a specific feature that is lacking or not well designed.""There is a wider thing called Jupyter Notebooks, which is around the automation side of things. It would be good if there are playbooks that you can utilize without having to have the developer experience to do it in-house. Microsoft could provide more playbooks or more Jupyter Notebooks around MITRE ATT&CK Framework.""Only one thing is missing: NDR is not available out-of-the-box. The competitive cloud-native SIEM providers have the NDR component. Currently, Sentinel needs NDR to be powered from either Corelight or some other NDR provider.""They should integrate it with many other software-as-a-service providers and make connectors available so that you don't have to do any sort of log normalization.""Currently, the watchlist feature is being utilized, and although there have been improvements, it is still not fully optimized.""If Sentinel had a graphical user interface, it would be easier to use. I would also like it to be more customizable.""Documentation is the main thing that could be improved. In terms of product usage, the documentation is pretty good, but I'd like a lot more documentation on Kusto Query Language.""Some of the data connectors are outdated, at least the ones that utilize Linux machines for log forwarding. I believe that Microsoft is already working on improving this."

More Microsoft Sentinel Cons →

"In terms of what could be improved with Elastic, in some use cases, especially on the advanced level, they are not ready made, so you'll have to write some scripts.""Their visuals and graphs need to be better.""The solution does not have a UI and this is one of the reasons we are looking for another solution.""I would like the process of retrieving archived data and viewing it in Kibana to be simplified.""This solution is very hard to implement.""The solution could also use better dashboards. They need to be more graphical, more matrix-like.""I think because we are a cybersecurity company, the thing that can be improved is the prebuilt tools, especially quality. Compared to its competitor, they still have fewer prebuilt security rules. Elastic Security, in terms of generating alerts, cannot group the same products into one another. Even though the alerts are the same, they still generate them one by one. So, it is very noisy in our dashboard. I would like the Elastic Security admin to group all the same alarms into one alarm so that our dashboard is not noisy.""We are paying dearly for the guy who is working on the ELK Stack. That knowledge is quite rare and hard to come by. For difficulty and availability of resources, I would rate it a five out of 10."

More Elastic Security Cons →

"The solution could improve by providing better documentation for beginners to learn, such as videos or other tutorials."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It comes with a Microsoft subscription which the customer has, so they don't have to invest somewhere else."
  • "It is a consumption-based license model. bands at 100, 200, 400 GB per day etc. Azure Sentinel Pricing | Microsoft Azure"
  • "Good monthly operational cost model for the detection and response outcomes delivered, M365 logs don't count toward the limits which is a good benefit."
  • "I have had mixed feedback. At one point, I heard a client say that it sometimes seems more expensive. Most of the clients are on Office 365 or M365, and they are forced to take Azure SIEM because of the integration."
  • "It is kind of like a sliding scale. There are different tiers of pricing that go from $100 per day up to $3,500 per day. So, it just kind of depends on how much data is being stored. There can be additional costs to the standard license other than the additional data. It just kind of depends on what other services you're spinning up in Azure, or if you're using something like Azure log analytics."
  • "I am just paying for the log space with Azure Sentinel. It costs us about $2,000 a month. Most of the logs are free. We are only paying money for Azure Firewall logs because email logs or Azure AD logs are free to use for us."
  • "Sentinel is a bit expensive. If you can figure a way of configuring it to meet your needs, then you can find a way around the cost."
  • "Azure Sentinel is very costly, or at least it appears to be very costly. The costs vary based on your ingestion and your retention charges."

  • "We use the open-source version, so there is no charge for this solution."
  • "We are using the free, open-source version of this solution."
  • "Elastic Stack is an open-source tool. You don't have to pay anything for the components."
  • "There is no charge for using the open-source version."
  • "This is an open-source product, so there are no costs."
  • "It's a monthly cost with Elastic SIEM, but I am not sure of the exact cost."
  • "It is easy to deploy, easy to use, and you get everything you need to become operational with it, and have nothing further to pay unless you want the OLED plugin."
  • "Compared to other products such as Dynatrace, this is one of the cheaper options."
