Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"One of the greatest things about F5 Load Balancer is that it provides additional capability for handling huge workloads and routing them to an SAP or non-SAP application. It is capable of supporting a large amount of user workload and application connectivity workload. This was the main reason why we chose F5.""There is a lot of documentation available.""Initial setup was straightforward. We were up and running in three hours.""It is a scalable solution.""The most valuable feature is customization.""The iRule feature is very useful for inspecting HTTP. Sometimes, we use it for modifying the headers of the HTTP.""The feature I find the most valuable is the support infrastructure.""The tech support we got from F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager directly was pretty good."

"It's lightweight software that can handle heavy loads efficiently.""The robust software architecture allows for it to be scalable and very stable.""The best solution, by far, for web traffic control for things in production and just around the house.""Zero Downtime has always been a strength in recommending infrastructure web services. NGINX allows me to execute such infrastructure with less complications and the ability to switch from server to server easily.""NGINX Plus' most valuable feature is the ingress controller.""Nginx is extremely efficient in terms of the connection rate to the CPU cycles ratio, and in terms of the bandwidth to CPU cycles.""The product is resilient.""When I worked in a security research center, we tested NGINX to support DoS and DDoS attacks, and its results were great."

Cons
"I'm not very sure about the security with F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM). We have our own private data center, but we are going to migrate our private data center into the Azure cloud environment. Security will then be a major concern when we migrate our own whole infrastructure to the public cloud.""They need to develop the reporting tools further.""We need best-practice information. They have something called DevCentral and a blog. But we want something from F5 itself regarding how to tackle the false-positive configurations. If you go into detail with so many configurations it will find so many false positives from the moment it is enabled that it will quickly impact your applications, and it will not work.""Its price can be better. It is a bit expensive.""Not everything is intuitive.""Technical support is somewhat slow and could be improved.""The pricing model has caused some frustration. My clients implemented the solution and later wanted to upgrade the features but the pricing structure was complicated. There are other solutions with better pricing models.""The deployment could be simplified."

More F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) Cons →

"Make modules easier to enable or disable. The beauty and ugly side of the NGINX modules is you have to know how to compile the module. For beginners or non-very technical aspirant(s) going for NGINX, they have to learn how to compile the modules.""Improvement needed in NGINX Plus could focus on optimizing memory usage for users.""The user interface could be improved.""Only improvement needed that I would point to is scalability. With it, I mean clusterized organisation on a low level. At the moment, the best alternative is RHEL HA.""I would like to see the Grafana integration in NGINX which is already present in HAProxy. Grafana integration will help the solution visualize all the data analytics on the dashboard which is currently not present.""The drawback is that you must obtain a license for everything.""NGINX is a very basic load balancer and cannot do as many customizations as F5.""NGINX Plus is moderately priced, but it could give better value for money."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Though functionality is high, its cost can be considered slightly higher than its competitors."
  • "The licensing pricing seems relatively easy enough to get your head around. I would advise anyone to ensure that you have a conversation with an F5 consultant before purchasing, as you would with most products."
  • "Take a look at the modules that you are going to use. Look into the best bundles for them."
  • "The only area that has room for improvement would be pricing, so its competitors do not have a say."
  • "If your IT budget is good, go for it."
  • "This product is costly from a licensing perspective considering its competitors."
  • "Check other vendors like Cisco, Citrix or A10 Networks. There are plenty in the market with which you can achieve same thing."
  • "Great product for the money. But they can get really expensive, so get what meets your needs."
