Quotes From Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"It is much more scalable and flexible than everything else in the market.""It's the leader in backup and archiving.""It's very stable.""It's a complete software that can protect all the main applications. Perhaps that's the feature I like most. The integration with the NetApp and other apps is also very nice.""We are using a KVM system in our cloud, and this solution works very well with it.""The solution provides us with a single platform to move, manage, and recover our data across on-premise locations. Some of the guys have been using it to move a virtual machine from VMware to the Microsoft solution, Hyper-V. They back it up and then they restore to the different virtual machine provider, and that works great.""The multi-tenancy is the most valuable feature for us because it's the only software that is fully multi-tenant and that has all the features we need to provide to all our tenants. It provides us with advanced features for MySQL and Oracle, among other platforms""The most valuable feature is sharing data sets like they're in a private cloud. We call it our "private cloud" because we can share anything that is inside our backup set with our colleagues or with other people, and yet, everything is still in Belgrade, in Serbia. It's not somewhere else on cloud servers. Everything is in our environment."

"The user interface is very good. The reporting and monitoring features are also good.""The most valuable feature is the recovery.""Its capability to give a BMR for all the workstations that I want to connect to.""The solution backs up Microsoft workloads as well as anything on the market.""It has an application backup, a file backup, a system backup and a hypervisor.""The initial setup is quite straightforward.""The most valuable feature is that DPM has an index so individual files can be searched.""The automated procedure is quite good for us, as it is able to capture all of the information that we require."

"The solution is very easy to use and it offers great support.""The solution can be used for all Office 365 applications.""It gives you an option to back up to the cloud or back up to on-premise, or to backup to cloud storage.""One feature that works well for us is that the Cloud Manager is a completely agentless solution. There's a similar dashboard on both the versions for on-premises and the cloud, and with reference to the Cloud Manager, it's a little faster because there's nothing to be installed as such. Being agentless, it doesn't require any agent to be deployed on the targets where the backups are triggered."

Cons
"Support for this product needs to be improved because I have seen a couple of cases where it is taking more than the required time to solve issues.""Its competitor, Veeam, includes backup and replication in the same product. I don't know if Commvault has it or not, but they should if they don't.""The back of virtual machines needs improvement. I know they're working on it. They're always doing new things but I think they still have a little bit more to do.""I think the one thing that could be improved is the customer experience. The interface should be more user friendly.""This solution can be complex and difficult to administer because it supports all of the many platforms, so it would help if they could simplify it.""Just to keep it running is time-consuming. There are five people on my team. Commvault was supposed to be one of the less time-consuming solutions, but in reality it takes 60 percent of our time just to keep it running, and that's not even fine-tuning it; that's just to keep it running.""There is room for improvement in its user interface and web console, called Command Center. They are improving it every year so if they continue in that direction, I think it will be a very reliable console.""They can always improve the interface design to make it easier. Sometimes, you need to click two or three times to do something. They should look at what tabs are used most and make them more accessible, to cut the time it takes to get to that information."

More Commvault Cons »

"The data tagging feature needs improvement. The solution could be a bit more intuitive in certain aspects.""We can't take a snapshot and take it outside, which is a problem.""The user friendliness could be improved.""There is a very poor online user community in terms of people blogging about their experiences with DPM.""Compatibility and integration with other products needs improvement.""The user interface can be improved quite a bit.""Additional Hyper-V knowledge would be great.""Management reporting could be improved."

More Microsoft DPM Cons »

"I would like to see more web support.""It would be nice if the solution was more complete. Many customers are looking for a single solution or silo that they can manage everything from. It would be nice, instead of having different products, if everything a client needed was in one solution.""There are still a few things on SharePoint that they need to correct in terms of how they backup and restore.""One area that can be improved is around how we define the different KPIs. In particular, the business KPIs. I have my own in-house application for the business KPIs, so for example, with our policies around retention, which is a period of seven years, I have to read these parameters from other applications and I need them to integrate well."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually.""The price could perhaps be lower as well.""Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers.""Our yearly cost is around €20,000... The cost is based on the number of users and the amount of data. They sell it per terabyte.""There is a bit of cost involved with signing up the entire solution. It's not a cheap solution.""Commvault licensing is a perpetual license so only the support is being renewed yearly.""The complete license gives us options for all the features. Commvault does not license based on storage or the management components. It can integrate with any storage vendor. That means that when we are out of storage and need more, we can integrate without additional licensing. In my opinion, Commvault needs to reduce the licensing cost by 20 to 40 percent to make it cost-efficient.""We went from Veritas NetBackup to Commvault. We switched due to upfront licensing and costs. We have more visibility into what we're actually purchasing. It seemed like, overall, the cost of Commvault was cheaper."

Information Not Available
"It is a rather expensive program.""The pricing is more or less the same as what we'd get from Veeam on Office 365, so it's fine.""Our usage depends on the number of licenses we have. On the cloud, it's a pay-to-use kind of model which suits our needs well. Once we have the Cloud Manager installed, the licensing process is okay, regardless of whether we're running backups in the cloud or on-premises. Sometimes, we have to restrict the number of users as per the contractual agreement and in this case we simply cut down on the licensing."
