We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere is a software-defined storage solution that has reduced administration time for storage. It's pretty straightforward to install and setup it and so far it has been robust and worked as advertised from StarWind.""StarWind vSAN is easy to deploy and administer.""It has allowed me to effectively and confidently manage the maintenance of hosts where I can power off a host and have its VMs migrate to another one.""It allows me to configure High Availability and failover clustering with some fault tolerance, at a cost point that doesn’t break the bank for a small business budget.""The features that I found most valuable are ease of use of the software that StarWind offers - with the first setup being a bit painful.""In the three years that we have been using StarWind, the product has yet to cause us any problems.""StarWind has provided us with a top-notch, well-supported, robust vSAN offering when other vendors have moved to hyper-converged solutions that are outside of our average clients' reach from a financial and resource perspective.""The management interface on the software is very simple. It is insanely simple compared to most SANs. The interface is also powerful when used to complete tasks that an IT administrator needs to complete."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Pros →

"They have one of the best technical supports in my experience.""This operating system offers stability. Setup is straightforward.""Performing a Nutanix software upgrade is a very simple and non-disruptive process.""It consolidates our servers, and improves our electricity consumption and cooling as well.""Ability to create multiple VMs.""It has centralized management. It is easy for an engineer to manage. More work goes to patching, upgrades, and maintenance. Nutanix is very easy to upgrade. It takes one click. Engineers do not need to spend additional time with Nutanix for upgrades. With one click, it will complete the upgrade and show the results. Other hypervisor solutions are not like this, specifically since you must do all the components one by one.""Nutanix Acropolis AOS is easy to use, integrates with other hardware configurations, and is simple to manage.""It supports multi-cloud integration that includes AWS, Google, and Azure."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pros →

"The component integration means I don't have to worry about technology mismatches.""The most valuable features are reliability and high availability.""The most valuable feature is that it is centrally managed, as it is quite easy for our customers to manage everything, end-to-end.""UCS Manager worked well for net/blade management and has allowed fairly easy use of dedicated bare-metal blades.""Access to VMs is now faster due to the centralized management console.""Some of the key features are the ease of operation and access, without constraining actions. The tool is available to actually move things around, do things quickly quickly.""It has improved system performance, batch times for off-hours processing, and reliability with production applications.""Systems run solidly."

More Vblock [EOL] Pros →

Cons
"The documentation could be better.""It took a bit of knowledge and support to put in place but once installed it works fine. Migration (HyperV) from one server to another sometimes takes longer than expected but there is no data loss even if the host crashes.""In all areas the product could be made faster.""It would be great if the Linux version of the management console offered the same features as Windows.""There needs to be more visibility on how long the cloud replication will take as there is no current ETA.""There should be some kind of active monitoring connected to StarWind vSAN, so you will be able to act when needed.""They need to improve the speed of the interfaces, thus allowing for better traffic on the network.""There is one issue as far as licensing goes and that is a lack of documentation online for users when transitioning from the free version to the paid version, or vice versa."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"Could have better visibility with the main OEM backup integrators.""The process of migrating from old hardware to new could improve.""While the customer support is truly incredible, for Spanish speakers it would be appropriate to have support in their native language to further improve problem-solving conditions.""It is a CentOS-based operating system, but CentOS releases security patches almost every week or every other week. However, Nutanix releases their upgrade at three or four month intervals. According to my organization's SLA, if a critical patch is released during that time, then I need to implement the patches within 30 days. If it is a standard patch, then I need to patch it within 60 days. Since that is my SLA, I cannot meet my SLA for security because Nutanix will not release the upgrade within these 30 days. Between the critical patch release and the Nutanix release, my customers say they are vulnerable and I am accepting the risk while the SLA is breached.""Storage utilization and optimization should be better.""We had a few problems with the foundation machine that you can use to build your systems out. We've got it working now, but it should be improved.""As Nutanix Acropolis AOS is on the expensive side, one of its areas for improvement is the price. It would also be better if it can be integrated with other cloud providers, because currently, it's only for private cloud deployment.""This solution offers excellent functionality but could use a stronger interface."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Cons →

"It needs more customer/client involvement in back-end management.""The integration with other vendors' products needs to be looked at. It's not as flexible as we would like it to be.""The implementation and support could be better.""RCM upgrades are painful.""VCE tools, like Vision or AMP were not stand alone, and depended too much on other management consoles.""Tighter alignment could simplify and speed up the configuration and delivery process.""RCM upgrades were not scripted, and you needed to roll on your own. We were led to believe this would be otherwise.""With respect to the technical support, there is room for improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."
  • More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Strive for a consolidated ELA."
  • "Related to tech support: I believe it is too expensive."
  • "I would not say the pricing is not good value. It is still on the expensive side, near the top-end of cost compared to what's available now. Also, the licensing has to be improved. There has to be a clear definition of the licensing from the initial set-up so the customer knows what they are paying for, without being hit later on with extra licensing. The licensing definitions should be clearer and, perhaps, have one set of licenses rather than multiple licenses."
  • "It is not cheap."
  • "Vblock appears from the first while to be very expensive. There are more items you cannot see in the BOQ: customer service, support, delivery short time, and highly experienced VCE engineers."
  • "I think the pricing is on the higher end of the spectrum. There could be some adjustments that could be made there. Regarding licensing, watch compatibility with external products that you run on Vblock. It has got to be properly architected, otherwise, you will run into licensing issues."
  • "The paid support for Vblock is expensive."
  • "Vblock is priced at a premium because people don't want the headache of managing and deploying different products."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
