We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I've been very pleased with their support overall.""The overall infrastructure is the most valuable part of Nutanix Cloud Clusters.""In terms of dealing with our business-critical workloads, Nutanix is a highly scalable, highly resilient, and very high-performing solution.""The most valuable feature is having the full features of my Nutanix on-premises applications in the cloud.""The scalability is good.""The solution can scale well.""Having a single pane of glass where you can have both your on-prem and anything else that you spin up within AWS is useful.""The most valuable feature of Nutanix Clusters is to protect the data."

"The dashboard of Nutanix Acropolis AOS allows for simple management. The dashboard has all the information online about what's going on at any given time.""It's easy to use and has a very smooth onboarding process.""Performing a Nutanix software upgrade is a very simple and non-disruptive process.""The solution offers impressive performance.""The fact that there is only one interface to deploy a complete solution for maximum storage is fantastic.""Best features are around data locality, compression, and deduplication.""The most valuable feature of Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure is its low cost, guaranteed to failover and failback with only a few clicks.""It is 100% stable. It's the most stable infrastructure that we have."

Cons
"The technical support for Nutanix Clusters could be better.""The reporting has room for improvement.""The pricing can be better.""Perhaps the one thing that could be improved is the documentation around the solution.""Some of the interfaces aren't as intuitive as they should be.""I'd like more flexible options to get in and out of migration modes.""We've had some challenges with the implementation.""There are still some things that could be improved about the product."

More Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) Cons →

"There could be better support for high power ESX and other cross platform applications.""The compatibility and integration of Nutanix Acropolis AOS could be improved. For example, we have a WAF application firewall and it does not work on this solution. Not all the OS's run on AOS. You need to have a newer version of an operating system if you want Nutanix to perfectly run all the different options.""Nutanix could streamline Acropolis' advanced management to keep pace with its competitors. For example, in VMware vSphere ESXi Hypervisor, you can directly put a host into maintenance mode via the GUI. However, it takes several steps to do this with Nutanix Acropolis, and you need to use the command-line interface for most of the steps.""The one note of improvement I have for Nutanix is that the installation should be easier.""The product needs improvement in the areas of SAN attachment for high capacity and high I/O profile workloads.""When we have issues with the solution, they tend to be around networking.""Deployment could be more user-friendly - currently, it requires certain skills with the network and nodes.""The reporting section of the dashboard could be improved to include more detailed reporting about the servers."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I am working on one configuration that is priced at $50,000 USD, whereas another one that I'm working on is estimated to cost $250,000 USD."
  • "There are positives and negatives to licensing. It all makes sense now, but it took a while. When the licenses first changed, it was a bit confusing."
  • "The solution has been more costly at this point. We do not see any cost savings."
  • "The price is high."
  • More Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
