We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"There are a lot of options for working with the database.""One feature that is very good is the backup and validation process that's built into Era.""It is also a single platform, all in one place, and that is a reason we went for this solution. Earlier, we had multiple platforms, the database and the OS, but this is a single platform that helps us with what we are doing.""We have an enterprise-level backup product that we're required to use, so we don't rely on Era's version. [But] it could be an awesome first-line backup. It's very elegant the way they designed it. It's quick and it doesn't take up nearly as much storage space as traditional backups. It would definitely help to save on tier-one storage.""It has wizards that are very helpful in the installation, and it handles automation as well as virtualization once deployed.""AI has been deployed within Nutanix. It's very easy to provision the machine within minutes of the application orders. They can hand those over and work along with the AI team to get the data available quickly for business analysis.""It saves operation time and day-to-day tasks.""The most valuable feature of Nutanix Database Service is the ability to manage multiple vendors."

"It is a good tool for monitoring databases.""It is the best database management system.""The dashboards are great for gathering analytic information and seeing where the problems are.""The most valuable features are security and speed.""The most valuable features of Oracle Enterprise Manager are the data guide and online monitoring.""I think the look and feel and the accessibility to the databases, the scale of environment support.""We can manage everything in our environment.""The most valuable feature is high availability."

Cons
"The initial setup was a little tedious and complex. If they could make the setup slightly more user-friendly, then that would definitely be beneficial. If they could give a clear indication of what ports are required across the business and multiple VLANs, then your prep work can be done beforehand and before you do the actual installation. Because the documentation that was provided was not 100 percent accurate, so we had to do a lot of custom firewall rules after we deployed Nutanix Era.""Patch management is an issue as it regularly causes stability problems.""The solution should provide more integration with more databases.""Their support is helpful, but maybe they need more technical staff. Their response was slow once, but that was the only time it happened, so I'm not sure.""The updating of the database engine is something that can be improved. For example, assume that we are using PostgreSQL out of the box, and it is version 10. If we want to migrate to version 11, 12, or 13, then it is not very easy to do that using Nutanix Era.""It would be helpful if we could patch Windows operating systems with the solution.""There is room for improvement in the pricing structure.""If there were data integration services included with the platform then it would be interesting, and it would help us a lot."

"It needs to support the Database versions lower than 10.2.""The solution’s pricing could be improved.""The solution has a very large resource system. It's too big. There are too many items.""Oracle Enterprise Manager could improve the monitoring types and the graphics.""I would like to see better pricing.""Technical support could be more responsive.""Reporting and statistical charting is largely still left up the end-user to develop custom solutions.""My opinion is that this solution needs to improve consolidation. That is what our business needs the most right now."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The licensed-based pricing is confusing and too high."
  • "Era is quite expensive. The thing that will be a showstopper for them in the long run is if you look at it from a technical perspective on what it provides and weigh it up against consolidation of multiple other software suites."
  • "Licensing costs will be the main scalability problem."
  • "It's priced fairly... It's a good value. When you go looking for something from Oracle that automates things and makes your life easier, it's always going to be a minimum of $500,000. Era's nothing like that."
  • "There are no costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
  • "This solution is reasonably priced."
  • "Not everyone can afford it. It's a bit expensive, so the price has to be improved."
  • "The pricing is competitive."

  • "It is part of Real Application Testing, so no new investment is necessary for clients who already are already using RAT."
  • "As with all Oracle products, care should be taken when using any features to ensure that they do not activate licensed features that have not been paid for."
  • "The basic functions are free. You only pay license fees for advanced features."
  • "The pricing is very high."
  • "We are satisfied with the pricing."
  • "There is only the standard licensing fee. There are no other costs."
  • "Evaluate your requirements carefully. Elaborate DR and HA setup of OEM can become expensive."
  • "Be careful to only enable the packs for which you have a license as this is an issue we see time and again."

    Reviews from Real Users

Oracle Enterprise Manager stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Several major ones are its central management and monitoring and its reporting capabilities

Robin C., head of Oracle Exadata Centre of Excellence at Tata Consultancy Services, writes, "The database performance monitoring features are very useful and allow us to quickly zero in on DB-related issues. Exadata storage server and Infiniband switches can be viewed from the GUI in OEM which cannot be done in other tools. The ability to deploy metric extensions makes this tool extensible for our custom monitoring also."

PeerSpot users note the effectiveness of these features. A database manager at a tech services company notes, “The solution's most valuable aspect is the fact that it is embedded with the Oracle database and Oracle's engineering system, its extra data, and analytics.  They have plug-ins that are very helpful. Due to the infrastructure's size, the introduction they offer is very, very useful. It helps with an overall understanding of the product. They have a very nice graphical user interface. The monitoring is good. We can capture the SQL tune from us. With Oracle Enterprise Managers, we can see the rich performance tuning.”
