VMware Horizon 7 vs VMware Workspace One

We performed a comparison between VMware Horizon 7 and VMware Workspace One based on our users’ reviews in four categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.

  • Ease of Deployment: Many VMware Horizon 7 users tell us deployment is easy and one of their favorite features of the solution. Horizon 7 offers a test phase so users can see the impact that an install will have on their system and whether there will be any issues. In contrast, several Workspace One users feel that deployment could be simplified if there was an integrated console that offered a better view of all products.
  • Features: Horizon 7 users like that the solution is hyper-converged, which makes scaling easy and straightforward. Users feel that the solution is stable, flexible, and very easy to scale. Horizon 7 offers great connectivity and is very secure. However, users tell us there are some issues with remote application features and that integration to the cloud could be more seamless.

Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"VMware is a hyper-converged infrastructure model. Therefore, for scaling it you just add more servers to it in the inputs. It's rather straightforward.""It is a stable solution. It is wonderful for multi-user environments, and it supports different virtual machines and operating systems. You can go for any kind of virtual machine. It has many features, especially for a call center. You don't have the issue of computers going down from time to time. You just need to copy the virtual machine to deploy it. You also don't need many people to maintain computers. With Horizon 7, you just need one or two people.""The most valuable features of the solution stem from the fact that it is easy to set it up, and the user experience it provides is just like a normal desktop.""I appreciate the ability to have a more centralized environment.""It stands as a robust setup with considerable capabilities.""The thin image offers efficiency and stability for the system, which is not always available in other alternatives.""The most important feature of this solution is the connectivity with every device, such as iPad, iPhone, and other terminals. The security of the solution is very good.""VMware Horizon 7 has its proprietary Elastic streaming protocol, which is very good for delivering VDI."

"It has all of the features that we need to use and that we want to use.""It is a stable solution. I would rate the stability a ten out of ten.""Among the most important improvements is the ability to set up different groups with different deployment policies.""It's a tool that can be managed in various departments.""It is like any other mobile solution. It gives us the ability to control remotely, and that is what we like. We can wipe out and deploy remotely.""It seems highly stable and scalable.""Sometimes, we face an issue and raise a ticket. The technical support team is fantastic and resolves the issue.""The most valuable feature of VMware Workspace ONE is its reliability."

Cons
"I would like to see seamless integration with the cloud because right now, the dependency is on the cloud providers.""VMware Horizon could be improved with more integration. It is also very costly for Enterprise Plus, which is a drawback. The renewal costs for the license are very, very high.""What I would like to see improved is not so much about the product. It's more about how to get information about products. It's always too much sales pitching and fancy works and stuff.""The primary concern lies with licensing. There’s confusion regarding licensing terms following the new management’s takeover. Consequently, our resellers and distributors are confused.""The product integration on local client machines running Linux needs improvement.""There is room for improvement in the integration with other parts of the suite. For example, you currently need separate windows to manage app volumes and the dynamic environment manager (DEM).""The product fails to support Mac or Apple workstations.""It is a little bit complex. You need a little bit of experience with ESXi installation and VMware before using this solution. You cannot directly jump to this solution. It also requires training. After you get trained, you can do anything with Horizon 7. In terms of features, it has been sufficient for my needs, but it can always have more features. They can maybe merge the servers. They can give the Horizon 7 server in one package with ESXi."

More VMware Horizon Cons →

"The product's initial setup phase was quite complex.""There are other solutions that might be better for certain use cases. This is not an all-purpose solution.""They could provide DLP integration for applications and specific user account security.""We'd like to see a better connection to Microsoft Azure and a better connection with Check Point.""The bigger vendors like VMware, Insight, and MobileIron can assign engineers to customers. You can work with them to develop the right competency to use the product.""This product makes use of SAML across the board, which has seven known security flaws. It would be good if the company created a way to protect against SAML flaws. One way would be to integrate a firewall server or an endpoint out in the cloud with which you could establish trust. If you knew nothing about SAML and you did some Google searches about what SAML is, what are the flaws, and what are the known vulnerabilities, eventually, you'll find that there are seven flaws. There are two methods that you can use to solve those seven problems. They essentially involve putting a firewall or putting rules, such as access controls, so that anybody in the world can't just come in, authenticate, and either be a good guy or be someone trying to knock on my door and get into my house. If I could eliminate that, it would be awesome.""The pricing could always be better.""The only downside to the solution is that the dashboard is very confusing."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Its cost is fair. You can go for a free trial, but for initializing a project, you need to purchase a license. There are different types of licenses."
  • "There are different editions available at different cost points."
  • "I don't know about the price. I know there are different tiers with the license, but I'm not sure exactly what it costs anymore."
  • "It is hard to know for sure. It is definitely in the $20,000 to $30,000 range. It is quite expensive, but you do save money on desktop power, desktop upgrades, etc. You're able to extend the useful life of your previous desktops. Previously, we used to change desktops regularly, and now we just change them when they break."
  • "The VMware Horizon 7 license is for three months. We are in the testing stage, we are still evaluating the product. We are sure now that we need to buy a license for the production environment."
  • "The license is very costly, as well as the renewal cost."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license for this product is paid on a monthly basis."
  • More VMware Horizon Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "You should take out a dedicated license agreement of your MDM fleet and invest heavily in innovating in this space."
  • "In terms of pricing, this solution is definitely much more expensive compared to other solutions, like MobileIron or MaaS360 or any other product in the market. This solution is more expensive by 30 or 40 percent."
  • "I have no opinion about the pricing of the product."
  • "The pricing and licensing are affordable. They are not too high."
  • "I think the pricing of the product needs advisement. It would be great to bundle the VM products together. I think the actual box itself should be included in the license. At present, it is not paired with the mobile device."
  • "If you purchase it for one year, it is very expensive. If you get it for three years or up to five years, then you can bargain a better price."
  • "There is a separate cost for technical support and extra premium features. The pricing should be simplified."
  • "The cost is a little bit high."

    Reviews from Real Users

Below is some feedback from our PeerSpot users who are currently using the solution:

PeerSpot user Patrick B., Cybersecurity Architect at a tech services company, says, "Its UI is extremely easy to use whether you're an advanced user or a novice user. When I first opened it up and had to learn the product, I was easily a novice. By the end of the third month, I was digging into the backend of the system and using it as a highly advanced user to accomplish what I needed to accomplish, and I was able to do it through the UI mostly."

Roshan T., Partner Manager North America at a tech company, mentions how satisfied he is with the product, saying, "You can put all your applications on a mobile device, be it a phone or tablet. It is secure and easy to use. Because it is centrally managed, you don't have to do any configuration on the phone. I just got the phone and connected to the central applications. I just downloaded one thing and everything got rolled out. Email, calendar, and other things were deployed centrally. If you don't have AirWatch, you have to configure your phone manually. For example, you need to deploy and configure your email manually and then synchronize everything. It is much simpler when a mobile device is centrally managed."
