Coverity Initial Setup

It takes nearly one quarter to deploy to one team as a part of our business groups. This is an onboarding process that takes time.
After installing the tool in Sandbox for running short POCs, and proof of concept, you add Q&A and production environments that are supposed to be. The next step is to conduct onboarding and training sessions with vendor support.
I rate my experience an eight out of ten.

I was not involved in the deployment process. Ten partner lines are required for the setting up and launch of the tool.
I rate the ease of setup a nine out of ten. I explored the cloud version, too. However, we used the on-premise version. The deployment took almost one week.

The initial setup is easy. It just takes a couple of minutes. I could do it myself. Coverity gave me a document with instructions, and the installation was successful. There is a guide for installation.
Moreover, the maintenance of Coverity doesn't require many people. It was done by maybe one or two engineers.

As I recall, the deployment itself only took days.

I rate the initial setup of Coverity an eight on a scale of one to ten, where one is difficult, and ten is easy.
The setup phase of Coverity can sometimes be straightforward, and if there are some issues, it can be a little bit complex. When involved in some tracking activity, sometimes, Coverity uses looping logic, making it quite difficult to handle bugs. Sometimes, the tracking activity in Coverity will be straightforward with a very good interface. Marking the positive rates and giving some green and red bars can be helpful in Coverity.
The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.
The solution can be deployed in a day.
My company uses the git repository for the implementation of Coverity.
Five people are required to deploy the solution. Around thirty people might be required to take care of the maintenance process of the product since there will be an increase in the team members in our company.

The initial setup was elaborate and somewhat complicated. The information from the Synopsys website was more than enough. First-time users will struggle with many tools, packages, and libraries. Deployment took 30 minutes to complete. Two to three resources were involved in the process.

I'd rate the initial setup process a four out of five in terms of how easy it was.

Initial setup for the infotainment program is not easy. This is because the template, specifically code template files, have to be generated, and that itself takes time since they talk to the vendor and they get the template files. We are using the same template file for most of the programs. It is not fixed that this program has to use this template file, so it is not like that. since it has to be fine-tuned.
For a few programs, like cluster programs, it takes only half a day or a day to get the setup done since everything is ready. But for infotainment, it sometimes takes three to four days, and issues keep coming in for the new enablement. Hence, it may take even three weeks to one month sometimes.

We found that during installation and configuration, it takes pipelines for continuous integration and continuous deployment. It was a bit challenging because the necessary base integration was not easy to configure.
It took us slightly over a week to deploy, whereas, with SonarQube, we were able to complete it in less than a day. It was due to complexities in Coverity that it took us more than a week. The complexities were related to missing API features and hooks.

In the beginning, it takes two weeks to learn how to set up Coverity, but later the maintenance work is very easy. The beginning involves soft code, that we need to set up before using SonarQube, we have created SonarQube property itself for every component and inside we need to copy different options for Coverity. We had global Coverity roles or vendors we had to allow it to work with global rules and according to the component itself and the setup. The full implementation process can take approximately one month to complete.

Setting up Coverity is pretty simple. It comes with a normal executable. You just double click, follow the wizard, and complete the setup. It also have on screen instructions as well, which makes it pretty easy and cool. Deployment is a much broader question. It depends on how many projects you are trying to scan using Coverity and whether you are integrating this static analysis solution with your CI/CD setup, ID, bug tracking, etc. That all factors in to the total deployment time. So if we're talking about overall deployment, including bug tracking, integration, email notification, CI/CD integration, and everything, it took us 15 to 20 days to onboard 600 projects with 20 users, including all integration.
We don't have a lot of maintenance. There is a major release every quarter, and we get information on new upgrades, patches, and things like that. And we do have the option to not upgrade. The maintenance is mostly covered by the vendor itself, meaning they deliver the patches and upgrades on time. So I don't see that as a hurdle right now. It's been taken care of.

Setting up Coverity is highly complex. The upgrade procedure is also pretty tough. We've had trouble with it on at least one occasion. When I went ahead with it, it destroyed the installation. I couldn't go back. So it's challenging to understand from the documentation. It seems like they tried to cover all possible topics in their manuals, so they ended up scratching the surface of everything in the world except for the particular practical items that I needed.

We have an administrator for the deployment, so I am only a user. I just added a few projects and streams, and use the data extracted from the compilation, and run the analysis. The setup did take a long time, however.
