Works well for aggregating traffic and has a standard CLI between devices
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is that the CLI is the same on all of the Juniper devices, including routers, switches, and firewalls."
  • "The protocols can be tunneled, but on a global basis, not on an interface, and this is a feature that should be added."

What is our primary use case?

We are using this solution for traffic aggregation. We connect multiple services to virtual infrastructure, connecting customers and aggregating traffic to the core.

We have an on-premises deployment.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is that the CLI is the same on all of the Juniper devices, including routers, switches, and firewalls.

What needs improvement?

The protocols can be tunneled, but on a global basis, not on an interface, and this is a feature that should be added.

I would like to see all of the features unified between platforms, families, and models. This would make it easier to upgrade later, without having to change the configuration.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not had any problems with these switches. They were stable when we put them into production and they are running things at the moment. We are doing a few things like aggregating the global balance between multiple lines, and we have had no issues so far.

We have a lot of traffic.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is pretty scalable using virtual traffic. We are not using that feature, but I know that it can scale. There are different models that scale in different ranges.

We have a handful of administrators that work on these units, in addition to our customer base.

How are customer service and support?

We have been in touch with Juniper technicians as well as with Juniper partners.

They are good. They know the product and they know what to propose. We didn't want too much in terms of advanced data center features, so we did not have any problems.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have two other types of switches that we run in our data center. There are Cisco switches to handle a lower capacity, and we also have Extreme switches.

We purchased Extreme switches because we were given a good price at the time. However, it is a little bit harder to work with Extreme.

How was the initial setup?

With our experience from the past, we found the initial setup to be straightforward.

We connected the console, started the IT manager, then configured the VLANs and the ports.

If you want an advanced configuration then it can be more complex because it can run in different modes.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are different licenses available for these switches that are based on the features.

We purchased the box for a one-time charge, and we are paying a yearly support fee of several hundred Euros.

What other advice do I have?

There are many different types of switches in different categories. It is best to look, right from the beginning, at what features are needed. You do not want to pay for Enterprise licenses if you don't need those features.

Be sure to look at the right family in order to protect your investment in the future. For example, if you want to go from 1G to 10G to 25G, then they will need to buy a new product. Going from 10G to 25G can be done on the same machine if it is from the right family. The planning makes it easier to upgrade bandwidth in the future, protecting your investment.

This is a good product, but it is not extraordinary. It does the job.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Robust, simple initial setup, but support could improve
Pros and Cons
  • "The Juniper EX Series's most valuable feature is its robustness. Additionally, it is easy to use and great GUI."
  • "Juniper EX Series could improve the process and ease of updating the software. It is a difficult process."

What is our primary use case?

Our office utilizes Juniper EX Series as part of its infrastructure to provide LAN access for connecting various devices such as PCs, servers, workstations, access points, printers, access doors, and wireless access points.

What is most valuable?

The Juniper EX Series's most valuable feature is its robustness. Additionally, it is easy to use and great GUI.

What needs improvement?

Juniper EX Series could improve the process and ease of updating the software. It is a difficult process.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Juniper EX Series for approximately five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is highly robust and stable. It has been in operation for years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have approximately 500 users using the solution.

Juniper EX Series is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

I have contacted the support from Juniper EX Series once. The response time took longer than I expected. Their public community support is limited, it is not similar to the community support Cisco has.

I rate the support from the Juniper EX Series a seven out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The Juniper EX Series's initial setup is easy and takes a few hours to complete.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of the Juniper EX Series is reasonable. Cisco is a lot more expensive.

What other advice do I have?

If you are not implementing ACI or a similarly complex deployment, it may not be necessary to use this solution for LAN access. Similarly, if you require frequent upgrades, it may be more appropriate to consider alternatives such as Juniper solutions

This is an excellent solution to consider due to its stability, scalability, and user-friendly interfaces, with even more features than a Cisco solution. It is highly reliable and does not require significant troubleshooting efforts.

I rate the Juniper EX Series a seven out of ten.

Great granular software feature with easy configuration
Pros and Cons
  • "It is very valuable for SRX devices and we have found it very easy to configure."
  • "More security could be provided, especially with the rising cyber-attacks in business organizations."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for this solution is deploying and maintaining network environments. For example, one of our major clients is the leading telecommunication provider in Africa and uses a lot of Juniper devices as part of a core network. We deploy this solution on-premises.

What is most valuable?

We have found the granular software feature which defines networking capabilities as the most valuable. It is very valuable for SRX devices and we have found it very easy to configure, set up, and install. I would recommend having it on a cellphone.

What needs improvement?

The hardware could be improved, specifically adding more machine and safety features with the routers and switches. Additionally, more security could be provided, especially with the rising cyber-attacks in business organizations. For example, the incident that occurred with Cisco years ago. Therefore, I believe security is also an essential thing for many organizations.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for approximately four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. It gives me fewer issues than similar products, so I consider it very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is stable. Since we are dealing with a telecommunication company, there is a lot of volatility regarding the amount of traffic that has to pass through these switches and devices. It has the ability to withstand heavy traffic and adjust the slide depending on the quantity of traffic passing the track at any point in time. So I would rate it as very scalable and classify it as an eight out of ten compared to other products we use in our department.

How are customer service and support?

It is easy to contact support whenever we need them for maintenance or updates, and I think we have level three support and can get across to them as quickly as possible on our end. The onsite support staff in our location is available every day of the week. If they cannot resolve our issues, they escalate it to the level three support team in the US.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We loved Cisco but it is expensive and Juniper Ethernet Switches is perfect. It is the perfect placement between price and technology too. For me they always run number one, the switches are very good.

How was the initial setup?

It took approximately two to three weeks to deploy this solution. However it could be quicker or slower depending on the manpower available.

We have a great team for deployment and maintenance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing costs occur yearly.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution an eight out of ten. They are my number one recommendation for anybody, but the security features could be improved. Startup companies may not have the funding for a new purchase of devices and needed support. However, if your company needs it and can afford it, I would recommend it.

Reliable and easy to set up with good connectivity
Pros and Cons
  • "It's stable and reliable."
  • "We would like it if there was more security added in future releases."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for power networking.

What is most valuable?

The solution is easy to set up.

It offers good connectivity.

It's stable and reliable.

We can scale the solution.

What needs improvement?

We would like it if there was more security added in future releases.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for two or three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution has been stable for the last two years. It's reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have 500 people using the solution. We find it to be scalable. If it needs to expand, it's not an issue.

One switch has 48 ports. We have about ten switches.

We likely will be expanding the solution in the future. We've wanted to, and now we have a need to.

How are customer service and support?

I've never directly dealt with support. Technical support usually is passed on to our seniors. If an electronic switch is down and we cannot use it, we need to reach out to support to get replacements.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

I did the installation two years ago, and it was pretty straightforward. It was not overly complex.

We have five staff members that can handle deployment and maintenance duties. They are networking engineers.

What about the implementation team?

We don't need outside assistance when it comes to implementations. I can handle setups myself. I did that last one two years ago.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

You can get an extended license. You do need to pay to use the solution.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate the product nine out of ten.

Robust, scalable, and easy to install, but it's expensive
Pros and Cons
  • "Both Juniper and Cisco switches are interoperable."
  • "I would like the ability to operate with other operating systems."

What is most valuable?

Both Juniper and Cisco switches are interoperable. They talk to each other.

The interoperability is very good, but with some switches, it is very rare.

What needs improvement?

The problem is with Juniper is the OS. Not everyone knows about Junos. If they are comfortable with using Junos then it will be the best switch. More people are accustomed to the Cisco platform, especially with the CLI or the graphical interfaces.

Juniper has its own operating system called Junos.

I would like the ability to integrate with other operating systems.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have worked for Juniper for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very strong and very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable. With the Juniper switches, all switches are L3 switches, which is a three-layer switch.

The 24 port EX2300 comes with four slots of 10 gig fiber.

We have approximately 30 percent of the market share for clients.

How are customer service and technical support?

There is no improvement needed with technical support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy. The setup is not a problem, as long as you know the operating system very well, especially the Junos operating system.

As long as you understand the operating system, Juno's interface, and all of the commands, it doesn't take much time to deploy. It's very easy.

It's similar to Cisco, but you need to concentrate.

You need two to three people to maintain this solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is very aggressive. The only disadvantage with Juniper is the modules are very expensive lately.

It could be cheaper, but they are always expensive.

If you want support with Juniper you will have to use Juniper modules, otherwise, you don't get the technical support.

For example, third-party modules can be integrated into Cisco, but with Juniper, if you want technical support directly, you can only use the Juniper modules. When tech support takes control, they will recognize whether it is a Juniper module or third-party modules.

Juniper switches come with either one year, three years, or five years of support.

When comparing, Cisco comes with five years.

What other advice do I have?

If you look at the market shares, Cisco is more than Juniper.

I would definitely recommend this solution to others, but not Huawei. I would not recommend Huawei, there is no chance for Huawei in the market.

I would rate Juniper Ethernet Switches a six out of ten.

What needs improvement?

The durability of the devices could be better. Some ports have broken because the data center efficiently cannot cool the system.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We never encounter any critical issues related to the product’s stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have 500 Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches users in our projects. I rate its scalability an eight out of ten. It could be improved.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We switched to Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches for pricing.

How was the initial setup?

The product is flexible and easy to set up. We required three executives, including an L1 engineer, an L2 engineer, and a project manager, for the deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is an inexpensive product.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are evaluating Cisco and Aruba products.

What other advice do I have?

The product has good performance. Its AI features help us with configurations.

I rate it an eight out of ten.
