SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager Scalability

Senior Network Engineer at a government with 10,001+ employees

In the past, I've encountered scalability issues with SolarWinds. I would rate their scalability as midrange compared to some competitors. While the administrators are typically involved in system setup and maintenance, there could be a larger number of users, possibly ten or fifteen, who rely on the system for gathering information to inform future decisions.

The company where I deployed the solution had approximately 17 branches across the country. The devices that were managed with SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager at that time I was there were approximately 1,200 devices.

I have had experience using other network management solutions in addition to SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager. Although it may be more expensive than some other options, SolarWinds is currently one of the best solutions available on the market.

I rate the scalability of SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager an eight out of ten.

The scalability with SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager involves acquiring additional licenses to expand the product's capacity. Initially, we started with a five-hundred-license limit. However, certain devices, like the DLCs and remote IO, as well as some file monitoring needs, don't support SNMP. Currently, we've only utilized around sixty licenses for the tasks we've undertaken. As we progress and potentially require more than five hundred licenses, we'll discuss acquiring additional licenses with management.

I would give the scalability a nine out of ten because I don't give high ratings easily, but it scales very easily. I recently went through a network upgrade project and added forty devices to my network without any issues.

The solution is scalable because you can add any number of devices using a legal license. Also, the integration gives us more information even though we didn't ask for it. For instance, the system automatically gives us information about wireless network configuration, controller configuration, and connected ADs.

We're using the solution across multiple projects. I'm not sure how many users are on it in total. It's likely more than 1,000.

We know that the SQL Server is scalable, and you can take it to large sizes.

NPM allows you to add pollers to scale it, but I am not sure that NCM has the ability to utilize the additional pollers in a NPM. I have never tried to scale it to thousands of devices. I have only scaled to a few hundred, and I know that it handles a few hundred devices with no issues in one box.
